I love reading manga cause it saves me time to know the whole story of anime because mostly the manga is more advance on episodes compare to anime videos. But reading manga also makes me think that how do they do it and this book enlighten my mind to the point that gives me ideas on how to make stories on manga and to draw my own manga.

I liked how this book gives you insight on how the professionals think while making their mangas. It's a great way to get into the topic of drawing, and feeling like the pros. I recommend to anyone that's looking for a new hobby, this can even make money.

This is required reading for anyone with a serious interest in the history of fashion photography, though at times it seemed to lean way too much towards gossip.For example, I don't know why Gilles Bensimon's penis is so prominent in this book.I'd have enjoyed more information on how these photographers worked and did business than their sex lives. Mr. Gross should have just put a list up front of the photographers that cheated on their wives (basically all of them except Helmut Newton), which would have left more space for 'real' information.But I still liked this book quite a bit, because what it gets right, it gets really right.In particular, I enjoyed the sections on Irving Penn. Mr. Penn was the King of Kings for 50 years, but there is very little information on him in the public sphere.Also, I liked reading about the business gamesmanship among photographers, magazine editors, and advertisers.Butt my biggest qualm with this book was the structure.At times, it felt more like a series of stories about individual photographers than a series history of fashion photography. It wasn't as cohesive as Model.But it's still worth buying if you're interested in the history of fashion photography, because it packs an awful lot of detail in about some of history's greatest photographers, including Richard Avedon, Bert Stern, Bruce Weber, and plenty of others.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. When I lived in New York in the early 1970s, I met and befriended a couple of the photographers featured in Mr. Gross' story, so I had some previous knowledge regarding this less-than-glamorous side of the fashion world. I especially liked reading about Avedon; his larger-than-life ego and his insecurities. I actually admire him and his work even more after reading this book. What I like about Mr. Gross and his writing is that it is well-researched, and I consider his work "historical"---many of the names in this story are all but forgotten today---trendsetting artists such as Bill King and Chris von Waggenheim, to mention just two---I recommend this book to anyone who wonders just what went on at some of the fashion studios of the most well-known and innovative photographers, and how some of the most iconic fashion images of our time came to be.

I threw this book into my travel kit before boarding a plane to Milan. I intended to snooze during the flight but started reading "FOCUS". I didn't sleep the whole trip. This is such an interesting book for me. I spent my career as a photojournalist and knew fashion photographers only by reputation. This book is filled with loads of information for any student of photography. There is information about how different photographers worked. I now know to credit Avedon's assistant, Gideon Lewin, for "light on a stick". Even more interesting are the behind the scenes rivalries of photographers and art directors. Michael Gross mentioned an Alexey Brodovitch Workshop Session that was taught by Irving Penn and Richard Avedon together. I never knew such a thing existed. Two masters going toe to toe. I just printed the 54 page transcript from the Penn archive at MOMA. What a treasure! This book is filled with many more gems. I'm rereading it now as a photo history book.

Although I've lived and worked in a tier distinctly below the arena of fashion photography annotated here by Michael Gross I believe I'm reasonable in observing this book is fascinating and intensely accurate. Gross takes considerable time tracing the world of fashion publishing from both the advertising and editorial side and does it with savage focus, so to speak. His details on branding, merchandising and the whims of consumer buying-abandon at times supersede his character development of the world's top photographers from the period covered. He also deftly sums up the current climate as digital slam dunks film into oblivion. And the cover features a capture from my ever-fave flick Blow Up!

An excellent book for anyone involved or interested in Fashion photography.The book looks less at the styles of photography (though that is covered) but more at the psychology of the biggest names in the recent past and the politics and business of magazine and advertising fashion photography.

This was packed with details and was fascinating to realize how small the world of fashion photography is and how often the talent moves between the companies who use their skills. Probably not all will enjoy this unless you have a real interest in the topic. It was a revelation how the creative mindset of the photographer controlled the shoot and how clothes really took a backseat to the photo shoot.

As always Michael Gross has done it again. He captures so well the world of the fashion photographer. It is these very photographers that he writes about and their amazing work that led me to pursue fashion photography as a career. As the books points out...each generation of photographers saw the next crop lacking in the true art of the medium. Time moves on and things change. What's for sure is that pre 2001, the enormous amount of creativity and even budgets that were around were truly addicting. Nothing could beat the rush of going to the photo lab and getting your contact sheets or waiting each month for a magazine to drop. Kudos Michael...what's next?

I loved Gross' book on models. This one just couldn't hold my interest. He's a marvelous author--just couldn't get into the topic or the people profiled.

Wonderful story. Rodrigo Diaz, The Cid, is one of the most likable heroes found in an epic poem. There were times while reading that I had to stand up and cheer for him. Not being a speaker of Spanish, I have no idea of how accurate this translation by Burton Raffel is. I do know that the story came across as both epic and humerus. This was as fun to read as Beowulf: A New Verse Translation (Bilingual Edition).

This was not a great book in the Kindle format since the interlacing of the original Spanish and English translation did not lend themselves to easy reading. However, having read this in its origfinal back in college, I enjoyed greatly the present translation of this important work of Spanish literature. I would recommend it be read in hardback however to get the most out of it.

I really like the parallel translation format. I can translate modern Spanish but some of the Spanish in this edition is unfamiliar, so the English text helped me when I found myself stumped.

First, and most important, point. Three stars is for the translation NOT the story! Some quick examples of how poor the translation is. Stanza 62, the Old Spanish reads "sabet, non vos dare a vos un dinero malo" and is translated as "Hear me: I won't give back a wooden nickel". Dinero malo translates as wooden nickel??? A 19th-20th century American invention? Why would this be the translation for that phrase? In stanza 123 the Old Spanish reads "tan mal se consejaron estos iffantes amos", which translates to "They made wicked fun of both Carrions". Wicked fun? Are they from Boston? The whole translation is very stilted and reads awkwardly. The story line is awesome. A man is disgraced and exiled, wins back his fortune and honor while befriending both Christians and Moors, always acts humbly before his King, and ends his life, after a series of ups and downs, as respected ruler of Valencia and father to queens of Navarre and Aragon. Story is 4 stars, the translation is 2 stars. Find any translation besides the Penguin one by Burton Raffel and it has to be better!

A very readable version of this famous medieval poem by the well known translater Burton Raffel. This is a bilingual version with the Castilian alongside the translation. Gathering a large group of followers, the Cid successfully conquers and despoils a large number of Muslim communities, culminating in the conquest of Valencia. In some cases, extortion is substituted for conquest. The Cid is a generous lord whose open-handedness attracts the support of many skilled knights and the revenue of his depredations allow him to buy back the favor of the King. The last part is a poeticized account of internal Castilian politics involving rivalries among feudal magnates and marriage politics.This poem is probably most revealing of the attitudes of the late 12th century and early 13th century feudal lords who were its primary audience. The glorification of casual violence and rapine will strike most modern readers (I hope) as repulsive. Similarly, the glorification of the Cid's swindling of 2 Jewish bankers and the use of women as pawns in politics is rather disturbing.This edition is accompanied by a nice introduction by the historian Maria Menocal, which lays out some of the history and historiography of the text. Among other things, this poem was pushed by the Franco regime as the national epic, a rather revealing and repulsive fact.

I have gardened since I was a child and have been collecting useful gardening books for many years now. I originally checked this book out at the local library and fell in love with it. Had to have it for my own so I purchased it used through an Amazon vendor. When I find a good gardening book with novel and useful ideas it quickly becomes well loved and well worn. My book already is dog eared, highlighted and filled with notes on post its. Having recently moved to a new location with basically a clean slate in which to gardening and landscape, this book quickly caught my attention with its clever as well as penny pinching ideas. I have already begun to search for the items I did not already possess in order to create some of these wonderful ideas for brightening up my house and yard with plants. Particularly, I am planning to make wooden boxes in which to grow herbs, sew an oil cloth tablecloth so hang from my wrought iron rails outside, and hang suet filled cookie cutters from the tree limbs for the birds to enjoy. The instructions to these projects and many others are all within the pages of this small book. I highly recommend this book to any gardener who likes unique, useful, affordable and recyclable ideas for your green children. Just imagine the satisfaction you'll have to see what you've done with items you never thought of as specific for gardening!

I picked up this book in a store and when I just flipped through found 5 or 6 projects that looked great. I have lots of garden books,so was hesitant to purchase another. Now that I have it, I found even more unique things to try. The step-by-step photos and written instructions are clear and easy. I've been a gardener for years and years, and am impressed with some of the new approaches. So glad I ordered it - now just waiting for the ground to thaw!

This book was purchased as a gift for Christmas.Before I wrapped it I looked through it and saw that it was visually pleasing and seemed to hae numerous projects.. The recipient of this book was thrilled. She lives in a home with a very tiny yard yet loves to garden with succulents. She aggreed that there were several projects she longed to try and she especially like it that there were detailed instruction to follow.

I love this book chocked full of creative gardening ideas. When I first checked the book out of the library and looked inside I knew I had to own it. It has so many wonderful ideas on how to make a small area come alive with plants. ALOT of the ideas I plan on making as gifts for friends. You won't be disappointed in this book it is a treasure trove of ideas.

A life like no other pictured beautifully .

Poolside is a great collection. I am an enormous Aarons fan and have his two other currently in-print books. Poolside shows some of the once great, but now little known members of an international society which is now all but gone. Doinnes, gold-diggers, and scions comingle in glamorous pools wearing Cartier watches, gold bracelets, and the classic '70s look, the gold chain softly nestled in a bed of chest hair. Hermes beach towels and Vuitton bags hold vigle under umbrella tables, visited by bowtie clad waiters refreshing drinks for little sister as she flirts with a countryless prince. Whats keeps his work from being complete camp, is that it was all real. People trully lived these lives. They weren't acting for a camera, they were caught in that moment when they were just happening to be having cocktails in Jamaica with Mrs. so-and-so.My only complaint is that many of the pic.s have been previously published in prior collections and others just don't have all the impact and roundness held in the selections Aarons made for the works published in his lifetime.There are many "society" photographers. None are Slim Aarons.

I love this book and the price is very good. It arrived on time and in perfect conditions. Nice to have it on my coffee table.

This has got to be one of the worst written books on Nursing Leadership. It was a required book, so it wasn't as if I picked it for some light reading. However, I was so appalled that a publisher actually agreed to print this book. First, it repeats itself numerous times throughout numerous chapters and the information is sorely disorganized. Interested in the actual definition of a specific leadership style? Yeah, forget it... she never explains everything fully (like actual vocab words) and I was often feeling like pulling my hair out while trying to complete study guides for class. Oh, and forget actually looking for a specific point, because you'll never find it, even with the appendix. Nothing makes sense. The writer also uses lots of cliches to make her point, dumbs down information and also uses business jargon that not everyone gets. A few times she refers to acronyms and business terms that are not defined, and I still have no idea what they mean.I beg the publisher not to make a new edition and please, please, stop printing the book. It's an indictment against the entire institution of nursing... and leadership.

This book was required for my nursing school - BSN program. I feel the selection of books my program chose were all very informative, to the point and we used the books for the classes that required them. During nursing school most people do not know where their career will take them, there are so many options the RN has available, so building a strong foundation is essential to success in the field. Nursing books are not written to be entertaining they are for educational purpose only. This book definitely offered education. After you graduate school and chose a path then find the best reference book you can find and carry it with you until the day you retire. I always recommend the additional study guide to a book if one is available.

Highly extraneous! It took twice as long to read through this textbook than any other textbook I've had in my whole college career. There are too many quote levels, too much website reference material, and too much dialogue/examples on common sense stuff. However, there are not enough examples and graphics on the tougher topics that would benefit from additional explanation.

I really wish my nursing program would have picked a different book. After repeatedly reading sections I would still not comprehend half of it. Business jargon is spread throughout the book with no explanation of most of it--almost as if they used a thesaurus for entire paragraphs then went back to middle-high school level for others. It would state a point and not explain it at all. Horrible. Absolutely terrible.

The book content is fine; what you would expect for a BSN nursing course. Easy to follow and well laid out.The quality of the rental itself is horrendous. The cover is very torn and just about to free itself from the binding, the first eight chapters are clearly water damaged, andthere is some kind of dark brown stain ( coffee?) saturating the top portion of the first few chapters causing several of the pages to be stuck together. It is useable, if you can get over the mental hump of the unknown sticky substance.I have rented for several years now and not had a problem. My review is to document the damages so they don't try to hit me with the full cost.

Not a fan. I didn't find this very well written at all, and I was able to gather better data from my own Google searches than was enclosed in this book. I can't say I would have bought it if it weren't a required text, but if I had bought it for some "light reading" I would have been thoroughly disappointed. As a classroom text, it was near useless.

Required for my leadership and management class for the BSN program. However, this was an excellent book. There is one section on conflict resolution that I had a friend read prior to trying to approach family members after a dispute. It really helped him understand conflicts and ideas on how to begin resolving issues. Best book from my nursing classes.

Dry reading, inconsistent views with nursing theory/evidence-based practice. I don't understand why my nursing school chose this, but there has to be better literature out there!
