But this isn’t a book about the exploration of remote places. This is a book about the silence within, the kind of silence that is found on a crowded subway or a barren mountaintop. In fact, according to Kagge, you have to find it on the crowded subway. That is life. And that is when you need it most.I completely agree. I lived in China for nine years. Having grown up in a small town in rural America and lived most of my adult life in a house that sat a few thousand meters from its nearest neighbor, I moved to Beijing, a city of 22 million, where personal space is, by necessity, simply non-existent. If you can’t get used to the idea of your face being mere inches away from the face of the stranger standing next to you on a crowded subway, you won’t survive.Looking back, however, learning to live without personal space was more a process of personal liberation than an accommodation to my new reality. Never in my sixty-three years have I learned more about myself or become more comfortable in my own skin.The book is a chronicle of philosophy on the topic of silence. But rather than just summarizing that discussion, Kagge applies it to everything from exploring the underground world of New York City to the appreciation of art and music.Which is pretty bold, when you think about it. He could sell a lot of books merely sharing some of his unusual and exotic tales of adventure. But he doesn’t do that here. He is wagering this book on his ability to share himself at the most intimate level.And I think he is successful. This is a very good book by a very intriguing individual. Silence, as Kagge points out, is all about listening-to self, the people you love, and the world around you. That’s where you find joy and purpose.

We live in a busy world. It's loud, it's chaotic, and it's a non-stop race in one of a million different ways. Everything is connected--and while that proves convenient at times, other times that connectivity thanks to technology creates a huge gap in our lives. I'm a hiker--and I adore the opportunities to go on remote hikes and not encounter other people... as a people person that may seem odd, but it was my way to "get away" and really clear my head. Ironically, I used to hike with any of a number of playlists going, letting the music motivate me. I haven't listened to music on a hike in years.Around the time I gave up on music during hikes and walks, I was turned onto minimalism. While minimalism and silence may not go hand-in-hand, they are both ideas and concepts that have come on with a maturity and better understanding of what is important in the world. I find myself now teaching my daughters about the importance of little things, and how big they can seem and how much we can learn. Looking at two blades of grass on the surface sounds boring, but when you get down to the details it is fascinating. Silence is the same.This book was recommended by my father who is a wise 68. He is one of the wisest people I know--so I bought the book and read it last week. It's a potentially quick read, but that's dangerous. A book like this needs to be taken slowly and digested. Philosophical at it's core, you need to allow yourself the time to really soak up what Kagge is saying... if you can do that, you'll be better for it. You'll appreciate things you never considered before, and life will be richer.

Of the many diverse books I’ve read in my 77 years “Silence...” is the only one I’ve felt compelled to read more than once. The first time, I found it a quick read and it’s 33 short stories exceptionally engaging. I started read two the next day and found myself slowing down to think about each story, to marvel how each one relates to me and my life. I immediately started read three — catch this — at 2:30 in the morning, slowing down automatically as I contemplate what certain elements of each story are telling me where to and how to seek and practice silence in my daily living. And just when I thought I thought I was finished with this little book, l found myself in read number four, as I use “Silence” to help me meditate. Thank you, Erving Kagge. BTW, When one my four children gave me your book as a surprise, she told “Dad, when I read the blurb about it, I knew you’d love it.” I have given seven copies (ordered throughAmazon, ahem) for my children, grandchildren and a dear friend who is the editor of a major US university’s alumni magazine. This was a hilarious and informative read. It's got recipes, history, language lessons and a good dose of jokes on every page. I'd recommend reading it if you're Italian or live in an area with a lot of Italian folks, as it will help you to understand their jokes, culinary habits and culture. Writing humor can be really difficult, but the author did an excellent job of it. I had a great time reading the book and laughing along with his explanations of funerals, sayings, stereotypes, the Mafia, and everything in between. Obviously, it's not a book for anyone you wouldn't show an R-rated movie to!

Italy is the darling of many a history buff and this book will surely be enjoyable for anyone who enjoys facts about the Roman Empire. However this book covers a plethora of subjects from Italian food to pop culture to discussions of the...completely nonexistent mafia. The book is a fun engaging read, it's difficult to write something that's both educational and enjoyable and this book adds some excellent levity between facts. I'd suggest this for anyone who is interested in Italy, or Italian American culture. Sometimes it's nice to broaden ones horizons and I bet if you're Italian this book can give you a newfound appreciation for your wonderful culture.

DiGerolamo's book gives an overview of Italian culture and history with a bit of flare. From the story of Romulus and Remus to famous Italians, this quick read gives short snapshots of some of the most prominent aspects of Italian-ness. Throughout the book, they also offer helpful translations for words like “vespa” and recipes for simple italian foods including meatballs and pasta. Simultaneously flippant and educational, this book is a useful tool for anybody either planning on traveling to Italy or interested in Italian culture. Kudos to Tony Digerolamo for a job well done.

Honestly, as an Italian American, I found this to be a pretty decent overview of being Italian. It’s funny, and I like that DiGerolamo includes translations for the Italian words he uses. This book is essentially Spark Notes for Italy, with a bit more humor. It’s got your Italian history, food history and recipes, history of Italian immigration to the US, family, culture, famous Italians, mob history… it’s a comprehensive guide and interesting to boot. I’m especially fond of the section on explain Italians to non-Italians - it sounds just like my family. If you're looking for an overview of Italian history, food, and culture, then this book would be right for you.

This book is pretty funny, and I have to say very enlightening in a more interesting way. I’m Italian-American, lived in Italy for a brief moment, and then visited there 2 more times later in life and there is plenty in there I did not know or have ever heard of! Even with all those guidebooks and tours… There aren’t a lot of curse words all over the place either, so if you have a teenager that needs to learn more about their heritage this is a much more palatable way than giving them a history book. I would recommend this 10000% to read before going on a trip to Italy. I like to have the back history of the place I’m visiting but usually, those books are so incredibly dull. There is the bit on dating that I disagree with- the author says that the Italian woman says she doesn’t want drama and to play games but in reality wants both of those things. Um, it’s not 1982 guy. Take that crap out.

Having followed Zero during his adventure, I was aware of some of the lessons he encountered along the way. I bought this book (and extra copies) in anticipation of how well it would be written, as well as the value of the "lessons" within and my desire to share those lessons with my family and friends. Zero has a way of putting life's experiences into words that anyone reading will understand.Life can, at times, be a struggle and we all need something to help us put things into perspective. This book is one you will read, hold on to and refer back to often. Purchasing this book is a gift to yourself. After reading it and seeing how much insight is shared, I am sure you will want to share it, too!

This book is packed with information! 350 pages and they are full of valuable insight. It is a fast read, too, because sections are split up to a couple of pages at a time, the way I love to read, a little bit at a time. Or devour the whole thing in an afternoon. The first 87 pages are stories with a bit of a lesson at the end, and the rest is 25 chapters of lessons on how to better yourself and lead a more fulfilling life. This can be read all at once or one chapter at a time depending on what you feel you need help with. I love a book that makes you think a little bit differently, and this is some unique insight into how one person strayed from the norm and changed their life for the better.

Just a bunch of nuggets of good things to get you though some tough times. Pretty easy to digest. I have highlighted and look forward to reading a few pages each day. However there is on particular page that I go back to everyday. I found something that spoke to me and you may too. You'll never know unless you try.

You can turn to any section of this book to find an uplifting application to your life! This guy is very introspective, full of insight into his own behavior, a great analyzer of his own actions; therefore, an illustrator, through his own experiences, of our behavior. He is “one of us” and not a lofty instructor! These real life experiences about which he writes are presented in a humorous and honest fashion. Zero has the ability to laugh at himself!

The power of connections is very important to the human soul. One of the things I like most about this book is the connections the author makes on his travels. I've had problems in my life making true connections. The stories in this book let you see how many opportunities there really are to make true connections in life.

This is one of my favorite resources for myself. I use it similarly to a daily devotional by reading a passage almost everyday. He has written a no BS book about how you are getting in your own way and how to see future situations for what they are.

I've found it full of inspiration to see things differently and to appreciate more of what matters every day. Reading about Zero's journey, and how he overcomes the situations he encounters, brings a very real and identifiable edge to the text - this is what makes it ideal for all those who are seeking a little more meaning to their lives. This is the ideal book to dip into and it's definitely one to recommend to family and friends.

Awesome book, The writer really helps you to get in tune with your self and have a better relationship with god!

I usually stay away from prayer books because it's usually filled with prayers and that's it. But Sarita's Single Woman's Prayer Book talks about the benefits of prayer, shares how to hear from God, and my favorite: walking through how to manifest ones Heavenly language. At the end of the chapters there are some lines for reflection which came in handy for me, as I love to take notes of what I've read. I STILL refer back to the prayers at the end when God places it on my heart to prayer for my husband and I'm not sure where to begin.If you've been single for a long time, newly single, divorced, struggle to hear from God, or want to enhance your prayer life or even wondering if someone is the one, this would be a good read for you!

This book has greatly helped me refocus on what’s important which is preparing yourself to be a better woman so when the time is right being the best wife and mother you can be.

I am glad I made this purchase. It has some very good stuff even if all you want to do is add features and tidbits to your fantasy-setting Savage Worlds game. Additional weapons, armor, a few spells, and an overall nice campaign setting.I am rating this four stars instead of five because there seems to be a series of "cliffhangers" (for a lack of a better way of putting it) when it comes to the story arc, monsters, equipment and so on. Mr. Fannon speaks of certain things which he will describe in future supplements for Shaintar, but to the best of my knowledge I do not believe he has released anything else besides this and the Player's Guide. I guess you will have to fill in stuff as you see fit.Still, this is definitely worth getting. One word of caution- just about everything in the Player's Guide is in this book, so I don't think there is a real need to buy both. However, the Player's Guide uses a different method for weapon damage and called shots whereas this Gamemaster Guide sticks with the core Savage Worlds rules. If you want to have multiple copies of books or if you are intrigued by the different weapon damage/called shot system, then get the Player's Guide as well. If not, this one by itself will be more than sufficient.

I do so like the setting. If nothing else the characters are all good - no evil characters allowed, and moral codes very recommended. While the author gives all characters starting bonuses, so no one is fresh off the farm, he also ignores money, weight allowances and other bookkeeping things that bog down the system. The ephemeral artwork will either turn you off as black and white sketches or give a dreamy feel. I also liked the card based adventure making system.

Wonderful high fantasy setting for Savage Worlds. Lots of races, and a great plot-point campaign. There is a new edition out, so you might want to look for it, but I just had to have this version as well.

Shain-tar is a savage world's game system. Its fun But I prefer Homebrewed worlds. IT has variations on the old DnD setting, but now with a simpler game mechanic. The game mechanic is designed to play quickly.

I was surprised to see this available on Amazon. I thought it was a great game with a lot of "high fantasy" that made gameplay more than just a dungeon crawl or dice fest. The reason I am surprised it is still listed is that now the author has redesigned the game and released the first of 2 books. Shaintar:Legends Arise covers Novice to Veteran. Sometime soon he will release Heroic and Legendary as a second book. Immortal Legends does cover all the way to legendary but the new books make a lot of changes to the rules in this early work.I still highly recommend this book or you can get the newer Shaintar: Legends Arise. If you like Savage Worlds and good roleplay, you will not be disappointed.

I'm really glad I got this book. I'm an absolute beginner, just got an electric guitar and I wanted something that would be fun to get me started. I'm not a kid but I don't think that matters for this book. The book is thin and there isn't a lot of crucial information in it, for example, no open chords. But somehow it's been incredibly useful to me for my first couple of weeks. On one of the first pages they give you a simple method for tuning your guitar and show you how to hold a pick. No music theory or anything like that. Then the rest of the book has some simple exercises that teach you how to play a few simple notes rhythmically. It goes over very simple power chords next and some really easy riffs. Even though I've graduated to a book with more content, I still use this book every day. It takes me about 10 minutes now to do all of the exercises as a warm up. I also think the songbook that is part of this series is a ton of fun!Get this book if you want your fingers to get used to touching your guitar competently before seeking out lessons. This is the basic stuff that you can teach yourself with the help of this book.

This book will give a young kid just enough to be able to get a sound or two out of an electric guitar. It's just enough to keep them from getting discouraged. That first year is where they either stick with it or sell their axe in a yard sale. With the materials in here, it is far easier for them to keep moving ahead.

Forty pages? Technically, yes, honestly? Several cheap photos of the guitarist ala 1970 Cheetos commercial fill out the pages. Not helpful photos of left and right hand positions, just silly shots. The few photos that are intended to illustrate are not clear. For example the before and after of how to hold a pick is ridiculous. A before shot? Really? The actual shot that would be useful has the camera in the wrong position.There is no music instruction here.No songs.Only power chords, which are not even technically chords.What the kid is supposed to come away with is vague.Give some rhythms, some chord changes, some actual chords, if not actual songs. Save your money. What is of use here in forty pages is covered in a page or three in many other texts. Don't be seduced by the cover. This book is not rock and roll.

i have been playing guitar for over 30 years and have started to teach my daughters, ages 7 and 8, how to play. this book is very simply and clearly written, the best intro book i've seen. adults would enjoy this as much as kids, especially if you have zero experience with the guitar. get this book first, and after you're finished consider moving on to another slightly more complicated beginner book such as "kids guitar course book 1" or similar.

Purchased for a 10 yr old boy - Id say a high beginner level. Its good!

I expected more from this, but I didn't really read much into it. I got it for my nephew for Christmas. When it arrived, I looked through it and found it was over-simplified and very short.
