Written a while ago, but still the best choice for learning about routes and lakes along the way. The portage information is always changing as water and rain make dry trails or swamp, but this book is the clear choice to read. Distances of portages are useful and the time to do a route is perhaps most valuable info of all. I have been canoeing here for many years but always consult this book to consider any new trip.BTW, if the book says a trail is rugged, it is. Enough said. Travel light, be ready for bugs, rain, and cold (still worth it!) and you will have a great time.Do yourself a favor and call the lodges that provide outfitting on the Gunflint Trail for those entry points served by the GT. The lodge owners are very knowledgeable about conditions and will not steer you wrong. They live on repeat business and want you to have a good trip. Tell them your experience level and time available, and they will suggest a route. Voyageur is a great resource to contact. Anyway, buy the book.
Great guide for planning a trip. But, alas, I just read it these days and wish I had been able to go back to the BWCA again.Just beware: this was published in 2000. Is there a newer edition out there?
This is the best series of books and author for traveling in the BWCAW.
The book was in perfect condition. It looked brand new and even had the map in the back of it.
