Review

National Bestseller"Hilarious and insightful." —Margaret Atwood"Canada is not an everyday sort of book; it's more like an encyclopedia, a conglomeration of assorted thoughts, memories and jokes, especially jokes, on the fascinating, infuriating and inescapable subject of Canada. It's delightful." —Robert Fulford, National Post"Lovingly explores the nation's quirks and strengths." —USA Today"Thoughtful, heartwarming, occasionally sad and at times surprisingly political . . . Canada is a memoir that doubles as a celebration of the country, chock full of personal and cultural pictures and artifacts." —Calgary Herald "A treasure trove of all things Canuck as Myers documents his life and offers humorous and thoughtful reflections on the country—from its history to its pop culture and unique brands." —The Canadian Press"In this love letter to the Great White North, [Mike Myers] fondly points out the quirks and qualities of our nation. . . . For non-Canadians, this biography-with-a-twist serves as a wry introduction to our nation; for natives, it's a funny and heartwarmingly patriotic tribute." —Hello"[Mike Myers] doffs the Wayne Campbell ball cap to wear other hats in the pop-cultural book: historian, linguist, sociologist and fervid Maple Leafs fan. The creator of Austin Powers talks about multiculturalism and the CBC, Stompin' Tom and Phil Hartman. Some parts are laugh-out-loud funny, others—such as the impact of his father's dementia—are touching." —Toronto Star"Canada is a memoir of sorts, specifically exploring Myers' relationship with our country, from his childhood to the present. . . . The book focuses on the impact that Canadian culture—from CBC to the Toronto Maple Lears to Expo 67—had on Myers' early life, and the ways it still influences him today. Add references to the all-Canadian traits of good manners, fairness, inclusivity, self-depreciation and mellowness, and you've got Myers' personal picture of Canada." —Canadian Living

I started reading this, expecting either a history book with some occasional injections of humour, or an autobiography with a splash of Canadian colour.Instead, things I had known, and NOT known, about my country were woven into a tapestry with Mike Myers' experiences growing up and living in, then near but still loving Canada.I laughed, learned and cried far more than I expected. I live in the neighbourhood where Mr. Myers grew up, so know many of the places described, but you don't have to, because the flavour is expressed so beautifully. This is a true tribute to Canada, and also a candid and enjoyable tale of the life of the author so far, a real Canadian treasure.

LOVED this book, read it almost in one sitting. As a fellow Canadian who left Canada at about the same time he did, I could relate SO closely to Meyers' memories of that era. His humor made me laugh, his recollections got me teary-eyed, and it was also interesting to follow the upward arc of his colourful career. I recommend this highly, and not only for Canadians. Most Americans would both enjoy and benefit greatly from the references to Canadian history which, I am sure, would be their first introduction to how things happened just to the North of our common border. . . Well done, Mike!

Mike Myers tells about his life of living in Canada from 1963 to 1983 and some interesting facts about the country. In 1867, Canada got its independence peacefully from Britain through a piece of British legislation called the British North America Act. Canada remained a Dominion of Britain. Canada did not get its own flag until 1965 and its own Constitution till 1982. There is a branch of the government called Statistics Canada. The book tells about long lists of Canadian achievements of firsts. There is bilingual packaging with both English and French on the same label. Can Con legislation dictate that radio stations in Canada had to play a certain percentage of Canadian music. There is no plural for the word beer in Canada. There are some phrases that are uniquely Canadian. In Canada, when you’re sick, you’re not in the hospital, you’re just “in hospital.” A Newfie is someone from Newfoundland. Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949, the last province to do so. The Canadian accent has some of its own pronunciations of some words. There are a few regional variations in pronunciation, even within Canada. Toronto and Chicago have much incommon. Toronto is an Iroquois word meaning ‘meeting place.’ Chicago comes from the Algonquian, meaning “wild garlic” or ‘”wild onion.” The cities are approximately the same size. Both are along a Great Lake and have proud traditions.

I'm not even a Canadian, I'm Japanese living in the U.S. for 20 yrs+ and do not know that much about Canada to truly appreciate all the details, but still I really enjoyed reading this book. I feel like we have a lot more in common with Canadian ways of thinking and living than American ways and it kind of explained why I felt so much at ease with people from Canada in early years of my stay in the U.S. Very interesting, funny, entertaining and enjoyable read.

I got this book based on seeing Mike Myers interviewed about it, and the fact that I like Canada and Canadians. I thought it might be funny, and it is; but it is also very interesting and informative about what it means to be a Canadian. Happy 150th birthday, Canada!

Love it because it all things Canadian.

I was looking forward to this book. I am an American who occasional travels through Canada and have long been fascinated with it. So I was disappointed to read this book, very little about Canada, apart from the suburbs of Toronto, more a vehicle to talk about Mike Meyers. A mess of a book, sloppily written, disorganized. Perhaps if I were a Mike Meyer fan (or Canadian), I would have enjoyed it more. But if you are an American who wants to learn more about Canadians, look elsewhere.

I was also born in Canada in 1963 and enjoyed this book immensely. It contains alot of resonating truisms. I would be interested in reading a post-11/9 epilogue. This book may even inspire me to watch Wayne's World.BTW - "As possible as Canadian, under the circumstances" is per the contest run by Peter Gzowski. [ I didn't listen to his radio shows (CBC) but enjoyed his books immensely. ]Well done, Mike Myers.

If you want to experience the joys of Christian living, I highly encourage you to read this book. Tozer’s goal of this book was to aid God’s hungry children so to find Him (via preface of book). Here are some of the things I love about this book:1. “The impulse to pursue God originates with God, but the outworking of that impulse is our following hard after Him.” Tozer explains the paradox of the importance of pursuing God. Even though as Christians we are going to heaven and we experience God’s unchanging love, there are still privileges of continuing to dive into God. God is looking for people He can lavish His blessings on, and those people are the ones who are diving into their relationship with Him.2. “Self is the opaque veil that hides the face of God from us.” Jesus’ death on the cross removed the veil that was hinder us from coming to God. There is nothing on God’s end keeping us from experiencing the presence of God. And yet, most of us do not experience God personally or experientially in life. We keep ourselves from God.3. “To most people God is an inference, not a reality. He is a deduction from evidence which they consider adequate, but He remains personally unknown to the individual.” If God is real, then He must be relevant to our lives.4. “It is the nature of God to speak, to communicate his thoughts to others.” God is not silent. God did not forget how to talk when the Bible was finished. He sees that plans He has for your life and wants to lead you into them.5. “Jesus taught that His power lay in His continual look at God” (John 5:19-21). This is still a kind of radical thought for me, but Jesus did nothing on earth out of His Godhead. Everything He did is something we can do through the power of the Holy Spirit. The key is to continually gaze at Jesus.6. “One of the greatest hindrances to internal peace which the Christian encounters is the common habit of dividing our lives into two areas – the sacred and the secular.” Whatever we do we should do it all for the Lord. would highly recommend the Pursuit of God to anyone wanting to go deeper with God. I am sure if you read it you will get something different than what I laid out above, but I believe whatever you get would greatly help your relationship with Jesus.

This may be the most convicting book I've ever read. I do not include the Bible in the books I've read. It is the inspired Word of God and therefore in a class of it's own. A. W. Tozer impresses me as a theologian for the masses. His insights are deep but his style is straightforward and easy to understand. I will not attempt to do a point by point review. I'll just say that if we, professing Christians, will honestly consider the points he makes we will come to a better understanding of what prevents us from having the intimate relationship with our Creator that He clearly desires. The point Tozer makes about the veil that separates us from God is enough in itself to explain our problem. I intend to read it again taking notes and writing down his many statements that make for excellent quotes. The prayers he includes at the end of each chapter are worth writing down and including in ones regular prayer time.

God’s Pursuit of Man is A.W. Tozer’s extraordinary prequel to his more famously known Pursuit of God: The Human Thirst For the Divine. In this book he aims to explain what it truly means to know God, as well as to be fully known by Him. The author so masterfully explains that, though humans are commanded to seek God, their ability to do so is quintessentially rooted in His relentless pursuit of them. It is only when the individual humbly recognizes his or her dependence on the sovereign God that they are ultimately freed to rightly seek after the face of their creator. In short, one must come to understand who sought them first in order to pursue Him back.In God’s Pursuit of Man, A.W. Tozer uses his skill of simplicity by taking certain topics which would normally require someone hundreds and hundreds of pages to explain and condensing them down to approximately one-hundred and fifty pages in a small 5x8 inch book. The book contains merely 10 chapters, all of which are so efficiently and eloquently written. Though his books are shorter in nature, they are by no means a short read. Tozer may possess the ability to say much with only a few words, but the topics which he chooses to compose on are still complicated by nature. I would encourage the reader to slow down when reading this book in order to properly consider the weighty topics about which Tozer writes. Gold becomes purified through an extensive refining process, and Tozer’s words are the same. Understanding the depths of his wisdom will take time and effort by the reader. From my own experience, it is quite worth it.When it comes to more surface level details, the book is up to snuff. It arrived at my house in perfect condition only two days after I made the purchase. The cover is made out of thick paper with an almost rubbery texture. Even though it is a small book, it has a very sturdy feel to it. The front cover displays the title and author very clearly for the reader to see, and the back cover contains a well-written summary from a prestigious publishing company, Moody Publishers.Overall, I am extremely impressed by this book! I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to be challenged in their faith. Its timeless truths make it a book which can be easily turned to time and time again for guidance in life. I consider it to be the best purchase I have made on Amazon.com up until today.

Ah, come on folks. The reviews are harsh, and the Steves are up front. You can read this for free on the blogs, if you are willing to sort through a decade of blogs to hand pick the best of them. If you find the blogs entertaining, and you don't mind reruns, then the book is great. I don't mind repeats. I haven't read every blog, or even most of them. There is also the comfort of having dead tree material in my hand for a change...It's a good read, and you'll chuckle. What more do you want?

This is a collection of the best blogs from the Freakonomics authors. I don't know why this book is getting such overall low reviews. It represents the same thinking outside the box attitude that we know and love from the two previous Freakonomics books. The writing has the same wry sense of humor, and is thought stimulating. Some of the blogs are funny stories, such as when one of them forgot he had his research papers about terrorism in his bag, and got held for questioning when he tried to go through airport security. Another favorite of mine was about being served rancid chicken in a high end restaurant, and even though the manager agreed that the chicken had turned, she refused to comp his meal. So, he published the story and the name of the restaurant in the NYT. Now, there was a lesson in customer service for her! I found this book to be very entertaining and mentally stimulating. I wonder if the people who gave it low ratings might have been unfamiliar with the Freakonomics way of thinking.

I'm a fan of the Freakonomics series. I bought this while on travel one day. It made for a light read sitting in the airport terminal (and probably any other light reading venues...bathroom....beach). The content is not as 'prolific' as the previous two versions - meaning you will have less insights into economic relationships and probably won't be able to impress others with as many interesting factoids. So, this one is not as great as the first two - but I give it 4 stars because it is still a entertaining read. The authors state outright that the book is a summary of their online blog entries over the years. I'm a fan of the series, but didn't keep up with their online commentary - so all this was new to me. I regularly pay for bottled water - so I'm used to paying for free things. :)I'd say, if you are a fan of the Freakonomics books (like the writing and the linking of incentives).

I have read all of the Freakonomics books. They are well written and hold my interest. Best is the combination between entertaining and learning. I feel most recommended books on a reading list, other than the classics, are a struggle to get to the end or you feel the author was paid by the word. On the other hand,I am not looking to read a manual or how to just to make myself suffer so my time is not wasted. These authors mix seemingly random topics and answer questions I did not know I had. My time was never wasted and I thank them for that.

For a collection of blog posts, this isn't bad. It is the fourth book in the Freakonomics series. I can't compare this to the others because I haven't read them. I imagine this one is a bit more freeform. They loosely tie their selections together under some pretty broad categories. These guys are clearly intelligent. Despite some quirky subjects, they do take themselves fairly seriously. It happened that I was reading this while taking an economics course, so it was fairly relevant for me. I think this made the book more enjoyable than I would have found it otherwise. If I had to do it over again, I would want to read Freakonomics first, then maybe come to this book.

I wish I had realized these authors are nuts before I bought this book! Some of their amazing ideas in just the first few pages include allowing the rich to buy thousands of extra votes in an election just by being rich, and paying politicians MORE than we already do. I guess once you have a few bestselling books and loads of devoted fans telling you how awesome you are, maybe it goes to your head!

This book isn't so much a book, let alone a sequel to Freakonomics, as it is a celebration of 10 years of the Freakonomics branded state-of-mind. Little to nothing here is presented as thoroughly researched forays into unrelated anecdotes but rather it is more of a ticket into the minds of Levitt and Dubner who show they think about various topics in somewhat different ways (such as "Why Don't Flight Attendants Get Tipped?"). The book does expand beyond this idea of understanding the psychology of economists as well, offering "fun sized" pieces of Freakonomics, such as the story/stories about Jane Siberry. Additionally, there are just genuinely fun parts that celebrate the decade long run of this "new" way of thinking, as evident through the author's contests. If you are expecting to thoroughly understand when to rob a bank or the cost of fearing strangers, then you should look elsewhere. This book is more of a piece of memorabilia that marks the 10th anniversary of the Freakonomics brand (the original book was published in 2005). The same way that die hard Harry Potter fans might purchase J.K. Rowling: A Bibliography 1997-2013, and fans of the Andy Griffith Show might purchase Mayberry Memories: The Andy Griffith Show Photo Album, fans of Freakonomics should buy this book to have a look behind the scenes of the mindset of the authors. Plus there are little bonuses along the way. Now, most of this book, if not all of this book is from their blog. Which means most of this book, if not all of this book is available online. For free. So why did I buy it? For the same reason that people bought Malcolm Gladwell's What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures: simply just to have a nice, updated collection of the author's/authors' anthology in the form of a tangible item. As for charging people for free material, perhaps the authors say it best: "Having grown up on the middle of nowhere himself, Dubner had always thought it strange that so many people would pay good money for a bottle of water. And yet they do, to the tune of roughly $100 billion a year. Suddenly a book of blog posts didn't seem so dumb. So in the tradition of Poland Springs, Evian, and other hydro-geniuses, we've decided to bottle something that was freely available and charge you money for it." Levitt and Dubner are just responding to incentives. If it seems a little odd then that this is only a 3 star review given what I have been previously trying to argue, that is because there are still some aspects that take away from the experience. Poor editing is one. For example, on page 38, the first sentence in the section "The Next Time Your Daughter Brings Home A New Boyfriend, Be Sure To Ask His Middle Name," Levitt writes: I got an interesting a package..." (the authors write their blog posts separately they explain early in the book. So yes, it is Levitt as the SDL indicates below the entry's title.) This piece about middle names also serves as another example for how the book falls short. Some of these "taste" of Freakonomics, the pieces that seem like they are the springboard into something truly fascinating, do not go anywhere. Although, it truly seems like they should. The source of this middle name material came from a reader who had sent the authors pieces of articles that showed crimes were being committed by people whose middle names were Wayne. But there is nothing more than that. An anecdote like this begs an explanation, yet there is none to be found. It would be like if the (in)famous abortion piece was shortened to a couple of pages that essentially stated: "After decades of escalation, the rate of crime is dropping!" Pieces like this should have been excluded as to been further elaborated on in a true sequel (if that true sequel should ever happen). Finally, why this book is getting 3 stars (from me anyway) is because of the authors' habit of providing theoretical solutions or conclusions in the forms of one or two sentences. It is one thing to show where the sources of their "What if..." or "How come..." questions originate from. It is further interesting to illustrate the seeds of these ideas that have presumably bloomed into full fledged Freakonomic pieces (as was partially the purpose of the Beatles Anthology CDs). But after only a few pages of introducing an idea, sometimes even far less, the authors will from time to time end by saying something along the lines of "My guess is that..." or "It would be better if..." These solutions and explanations and conclusions are not rooted in anything except for speculation. Which is something that anyone can do. Readers should not expect an answer for every problem in this book because this book is not about that. It is 131 examples of how to think differently (which does a better job by doing it indirectly than the direct approach of Think Like a Freak: The Authors of Freakonomics Offer to Retrain Your Brain). And there are some gems in the 131 examples. But the abbreviated conclusions negate these introductions to new ideas because they are not founded in data. Nor years of research. It is just the authors attempting to wrap up these little bits of stories by inserting their opinions. Which seems odd for the world of Homo economicus. Not to say that the authors shouldn't insert their opinions. But even when they blatantly say that it is a guess, it still undermines the fact that their actual conclusions of former pieces are based on data. And their success is based on their unique interpretation of the data. All in all, it is an nice, quick read. It introduces some interesting thoughts but it does not take the time to explore them. Because that is not what this book is about. It is about the fact that for 10 years, the world has been shown how to think differently. That the world is not black and white. Nor are there just many shades of grey. But often, you may find hues of fuchsia. It is an anniversary of the creation of something interesting and addictive. It is a celebration that people from all walks of life have come together to join in on becoming Freaky. Through all its faults, and the faults are there, When To Rob A Bank is a nice afterward to the first decade, a little memento from Misters Levitt and Dubner.

I wish we had ordered this year's ago even if it had meant reordering it over and over again for updated information. Had we known our one child would stay, unwaveringly, committed to become a physician; we would have tried harder to find a resource like this sooner. Most kids change their minds several times before graduating college, let alone high school, so we assumed we could get all the information we needed from internet sites. This book is far superior to searching the internet sites. It allows simple comparisons by flipping a few pages. It also leads to more information. There are internet sites we may never have found had it not been for the leads provided by this book. Our kid is rethinking his whole strategy based on the information in this book. We believe his chances of admission to medical school will be greatly improved thanks to this book.

The Complete Guide to BS/MD Programs by Todd Johnson: a reviewAn ever growing number of high school students who want to become doctors are taking a long, hard look at applying to medical school directly out of high school. They have good reason. The traditional medical school process is highly competitive and it takes at least 8 years, between undergraduate and medical school, to finish. Gaining admission to a BS/MD program might allow them to avoid taking the MCAT altogether, while finishing medical school in as few as six years.Todd Johnson's The Complete Guide to BS/MD programs, clearly explains the admissions process in seven chapters and an appendix which comprehensively lists all the BS/MD programs. The listings include the length of the program, a brief description of the program, minimum requirements for candidates, and, most importantly, the number of applicants, how many were interviewed, and how many were finally admitted. The chapters I found particularly informative explained what you need in order to be competitive in most BS/MD programs, finding the right program, and the medical school interview. By the way, if you want to view portions of the book, along with the table of contents, just go to Amazon.com.There are advantages and disadvantages to BS/MD programs. One advantage is, once you've been accepted into medical school, it allows you to concentrate on the learning process, rather than on groveling for grades, as most pre-meds must. As mentioned, it also might allow you to not take the MCATs and to finish the whole process much more quickly. There are also, of course, disadvantages. Assuming you¡¯re so capable as to gain admission to one of these programs (and they are as keenly competitive as medical school is), in all likelihood, you¡¯ll be equally able to get into medical school via the more traditional path, after attending a highly selective undergraduate school and then applying to an equally challenging medical school. Going to the more elite undergraduate schools might better position you to enter a more prestigious medical school, which could possibly land you in a more select residency program. Another disadvantage is that many BS/MD programs commit you to their program and prohibit you from applying to other programs (that information is in the book as well). Additionally, if you get accepted to a BS/MD program and decide that medicine is not for you, it might prove difficult transferring back into a four year baccalaureate program, depending on how compressed the college portion of the BS/MD program is.Many of the competitive candidates have research experience, extensive volunteer activities, have shadowed physicians¡ so that they truly know what is involved with being a doctor-, and have a range of extracurricular activities that indicate commitment, passion, and leadership. Even with all this, they will still need to convince the admissions office at the medical school that they have what it takes to be a good doctor: a compassionate nature, the toughness to take on the pressures of medical school, and the ability to perform calmly under life and death situations. These qualities need to be addressed by the personal essays, recommendations, and the interview. The interview is a crucial factor in the BS/MD admissions decision. The Complete Guide to BS/MD programs covers what happens during the interview and the questions you should be prepared to answer. Most importantly, the book contains a lot of questions you need to get answered about BS/MD programs: how does the program address clinical training; what is the pass rate for the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE)-parts 1 & 2; how good is the medical school in getting students into their top three residency choices; and what is the completion rate for the program? The BS/MD approach is not easy. Most of the programs admit around 2-3% of applicants. Further, the competition is fierce: applicants to Brown's PLME, or Northwestern's HPME programs are usually in the top 1-2% of their classes and have average SAT scores above 2250. Yet, this might be a path most appealing to students seeking MDs. Certainly The Complete Guide to BS/MD Programs will make navigating this journey a lot clearer.

Great book if you have a HS student that is looking to apply to a BS/MD program. My son used the is book to explore the different programs out there as it is hard to find which schools offer BS/MD. It was useful to have all the requirements in one place. I'd say the guide did help as he did get into a couple of very good programs. It is a route worth exploring but your child really needs to know if this is the right career path and that is hard to know as a 17 year old. My son decided to go the traditional route and turn down these schools but it was a great experience to do the med school interviews and have a peek of what he will have to go through if he decided med school is for him.

I am very happy with this purchase. I am a senior and planning on applying to BS MD programs and this book was very useful. Everything was organized well and gave good information on the application process and the colleges that offer these programs.

Excellent resource with details on all current BS/MD programs, found it very useful in picking the schools to apply to for my son. It gives you names of the individual programs and websites, tuition, acceptance rates and so much more. Helps you narrow down your list according to your individual needs. Made the application process so much easier. Valuable resource, can not express my gratitude enough to the author.

Useful information for any student planning to apply for accelerated BS/MD program.

Many thanks to NetGalley, F & W Media, and Kerry Bogert for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are 100% my own and independent of receiving an advance copy.Coffeehouse knits blends together two of my favourite things - coffee and knitting. Apparently I’m not the only one! Enough knitters love their brews whether it is tea or coffee, so much so, that they have dedicated a whole book to the idea. More often than not when we knit we usually have a hot drink sitting beside us. The meditative quality of knitting lends itself to sipping something while you do it. Another popular activity of late is these “Stitch & Bitch” nights where knitters will meet up, usually at a coffeehouse and spend a few hours with like minded people knitting and sharing. It is a place where you can show off what you are working on, get advice if you are stuck and talk about whatever is going on in your life. It is usually a drop in type group and new members are welcome with open arms. This book is beautiful. Not only do they have delicious names like “House Blend Cardigan” and “Breakfast Brioche Shawl”, the yarns used are yummy. Some of the patterns designs echo things like the swirl in the foam of of a frothy cappuccino or the speckles pattern that remain in your cup from tea leaves. I am in love with so many of the patterns and find them stylish and wearable. There is a range of difficulty so whether you are a new knitter or an experienced one, you will find enough to keep you interested. There is a small index of special techniques that are explained. What makes this unique is that interspersed between the patterns are a selection of essays that muse of the experience of knitting. From knitting groups, to spending a night at home curled up the “how” of how we experience knitting is as important as the what of what we are knitting.I can hardly wait until this book is out, in my hands, and I am knitting one of the patterns!

This beautifully illustrated knitting book celebrates knitters in community, especially if that community takes place in a coffeehouse! Essays about what it is like to knit with others are interspersed every three or four patterns. The patterns themselves are a variety of scarves, shawls, hats, sweaters, cowls and more that are just a shade off classic. So if you're looking for classic projects with just a little something different, you'll probably enjoy the patterns in this book. The designs are mostly for intermediate to advanced for the sweaters, while the other patterns range from beginner to intermediate level. They are all for the most part quite lovely, and I think I'm going to be digging out some yarn to work on a few cowls. My only complaint about the book is a typical complaint about contemporary crafting books and magazines. For me, I like to see very clear photographs that show the unique stitches used the pattern as well as the general, overall look of the piece. I don't need to see models in the distance sitting on their bed with her knitted socks on or sitting in a cafe table with their cowls. Give me something up close photos so I can really get a sense what the knitted fabric, and ultimately the garment, looks like. Also, as this is based around the coffeehouse knitting community, a lot of the colors used in the projects are the various colors of coffee. So some of the pictures themselves as well as some of the yarn choices are dark. These aspects sometimes make it difficult to see the detail of the garment itself. I would have liked to have seen variety in color, well, because color is part of what makes knitting interesting. These patterns are mostly in browns or greys.Other than that, this is a lovely collection of near-classic knitwear that would be an asset to most knitters' libraries.

Coffeehouse Knits is a different kind of knitting book for this reader. Alongside the patterns are essays by some of the patterns creators telling how they became knitters or what knitting communities mean to them. And the patterns! The patterns are as yummy as some decadent coffee drinks. The patterns are not overly complex so a few can be done by beginning knitters, which is always nice to find. What impressed me most were the sweater patterns. I am not big on knit sweaters because while most look great on the super-thin models, they end up looking clunky on the average wearer. These, however, might just change my mind. The cowl and scarf patterns are luscious. The Fudge Swirl scarf, which uses cables is a fascinating design that looks like it would be as much fun to wear and it would be to knit. As for cables, if you knit, you know they're not hard, they deliver a great look, but I sometimes find them tedious. And, I see a hat in my future. All in all, Coffeehouse Knits has some very accessible and fun patterns and most are for portable objects, like cowls, hats, socks. The photography is great, just as you'd expect from Interweave. I think that this would make a great addition to anyone's knitting library.I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Classic sweaters, cowls, shawls, socks, and even a nice pair of cozy mittens. This book has a nice collection of patterns plus several essays on knitting and community. The authors evoke a warm coffeehouse oozing with friendship and wooly knitting projects. This would be a nice gift book for the knitters in your life.

I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. Coffeehouse Knits edited by Kerry Bogert is a collection of knitting patterns and essays with a coffeehouse theme. The collection of 20 patterns will keep you toasty from head to toe. The patterns are easy to follow beautifully photographed and the essays are interesting to read.Hat, Cowl, Shawl, Sweater, Cardigan, Mitten and Sock patterns are all included each one a delight. I will definitely be purchasing this book as I intend to make a number of the patterns in it. Publishing Date March 12, 2019 #NetGalley #Interweave #KerryBogert

Loretta Lynn's "Honky Tonk Girl: My Life In Lyrics" isn't quite what I was expecting. What I was expecting was a narrative explaining the stories behind Loretta's songs, instead what the book is is a collection of all of her songs in lyric form. For instance I was hoping to get the full lyric for "Coal Miner's Daughter" which Loretta has said contained far more lyrics than what was recorded. This longer version of lyrics is not included, the closest it comes is a copy of the original lyric sheet written by Loretta which does contain some different lines than what was recorded. But sadly, it's only the first page of the original sheet included so we don't get the whole song. Only the biggest songs get a blurb written about them. The rest are just presented as lyrics with which album they appeared on. There are photos throughout the book. But perhaps the most interesting thing of the book are the unreleased songs, probably a third of the book is lyrics from songs that have yet to be released (or even recorded). If you were hoping to learn a lot about the genesis of the songs, you won't really find it in this book, if you're looking for a songbook of her lyrics, then this is the book for you.

If your a Loretta Lynn fan, be sure to add this to your collection! I love it!

Great Book Loretta Lynn. The Book has great photos too. What I love about Amazon is that you get stuff for a penny sometimes. This book was a penny. Worth buying. Especially at that price. LOL A must have for any Loretta fan. It's a big book to.

I did not find this book very enjoyable. It was somewhat boring. However if you are a fan of Loretta Lynn, which I am you might enjoy reading about all of the songs that she has written.

An informative read..I enjoyed the insight of her writing style...

One of the best books I 've read in a long time. I especially like how she tells the stories behind how she wrote the songs. And I really enjoyed reading the lyrics of songs that she has not recorded or relesaed yet. Miss Loretta is one great story teller and one the most influential singer-songwriters of the 20th century !!!!!!

very good reading

It's an excellent book. I would recommend it to anyone. I love reading about how songwriters come up with their songs since I'm a songwriter. Loretta Lynn is an excellent person to read about.
