Elixir in Action uses Elixir 1.0.x, Erlang 17.x while the current versions are Elixir 1.6.3 and Erlang/OTP 20.This requirement gets stated on page 20 on the first page of chapter 2 - NOT in an obvious location.For a book dated 2015, this is unpardonable. I spent some time working on some advancedmaterial and encountering strange "errors" due to this "oversight" on my part. I didn't start a seriousattempt find the solution until I tried to run the code downloaded from the Manning site.I would be interested in reviewing a more up-to-date version of this book.Other than that, a beginner may find material worth learning, but there are better books out there.

Wow this book is awesome. The author gives a gentle but concise tour through the language features. This is by no means an introduction to FP or Programming, it is oriented towards experienced programmers. After 8 years of programming professionally in Python and Java I find Elixir a breath of modern and fresh coding. This books boost the fun of learning it. Highly recommended.

This reads like a story and I love it. Usually technical books will just have example after example of large pieces of code and not cover small portions of crucial context. This book hits into that context very well and gets deep into the workings of Elixir. I recommend for any Elixir programmer as a first book.

A good book for experienced programmers who want to learn more about Elixir. There are some topics in the book that have since been deprecated like HashDict but overall the material is still good.

This is a great book. As I follow along, I feel that I understand how to write elixir applications.

totally worth the read

Although many aspects of Elixir are dealt with, several times in every chapter you'll read that something was important enough to mention but "not worth writing about ... go somewhere else to learn about it". This book isn't useful to really gain an in-depth understanding of the language.

In recent years I witness an explosion in at least the interest in Functional Programming languages and a possible (hard to measure) spur in their use. In my view, they are worth exploring. Perhaps more than worth, a must. Since each FP language was built to tackle a specific purpose naturally, every one has its own niche applications, many strong and a several weak points. Erlang is one of them. In short, and to the point - Erlang's syntax is notoriously hard. Elixir was created where Erlang was left off - tackling the syntax and tooling woes. Also Elixir feels like an extension to Erlang. But allows a dramatic boost to productivity of a developer. Speaking of the developer, written by a programmer to a programmer who is Saša Jurić makes it a win-win for anyone embracing Functional Programming and not only Elixir. This book is probably the gentlest introduction to Elixir and the Functional Programming altogether. It walks you through the very basics and not so intricacies of Elixir towards building the real world project. Step by step, with tasteful, even timely repetitions of what you learned in the past chapters so you do not need to frantically go in reverse in the book flipping pages or Ctrl-Fing. The book has a wast number of code samples, neat annotations and a through index (*important for those using books).In terms of my closing words, a very worth your reading material, the Elixir online community is also strong and growing, I am watching how it all unfolds, in the meanwhile it is a 5 out 5. I can't begin to say now awesome this book was, and how much I so needed to read such a story as this!! Everything I've gone through myself in my past relationships, I wasn't sure if the Lord could still write a love story for me. Now I know without a doubt, that He can and He will, thanks to Cheryl sharing her true story how God did just that for her! She allowed Him to take control, and the result was absolutely amazing and inspiring! Men, you also would do well to read this book, especially thanks to Chris, Cheryl's husband giving very sound advice on how to prayerfully pursue the right woman God wants you to have in your life. I myself am now excited to see what God does this coming year in my life...waiting on Him no longer will be a chore, but a privilege, and I know that the end results will be exactly the way God always wanted it to be for me. Read, pray, get inspired from Cheryl's story, and get ready to see what God will do in your life, as you wait on Him to write our your own love story!

i've only read 3 chapters so far and they were spot on. they were exactly my feelings in areas. they were not eye opening revelations. it's stuff i have heard/read before but she has lived it. a lot of people who teach on marriage and singleness are not p[over 35yrs old and still waiting for a spouse. she was funny and open and honest. i really loved the chapter that her husband wrote. but i started with Chapter Four: I Must Be Defective then i skipped to Ch. 17 his finally where her husband talks about his journey of waiting- must read ladies and gents, then i read the first chapter. i might up it to 5 starts after i finish reading it. but i was so encouraged by this book.i finished it and wow the pitfalls she endures. love her honesty. love her repeated statements to PRAY, PRAY, and PRAY.first pray to see if it's god's will for you to even be married. then pray to surrender to his will. then pray for guidance EVERY step o f the way, every relationship, every friendship,, .etc.basically unless you have a close relationship with God, pray a lot, and know the Word you can't mimic her journey.great book!

I have read a LOT of relationship books over the years and I have found the most comfort in those books written from a Christian perspective. Let's face it: because times have changed there are lots of women (and men!) who just can't seem to meet the right person. If you are a God-fearing, church going, sold-out for Christ, Bible-reading, Rosary-praying, no-sex-outside-of-marriage committed Christian (whew!) it ain't easy. It isn't IMPOSSIBLE but it isn't easy. I have intermittently given up over the years but then something pulls me back from the abyss. Oddly enough, I had just finished my quiet time with God when I went onto Amazon.com because I was thinking about getting another book--not a how-to book on dating or finding a man or anything like that. Rather, I was looking for a book about WAITING. After all, that's the season I'm in and have been in for a while. I was seriously considering purchasing two other books when this book showed up in my visual field. It was FREE and it had amazing reviews. Nuff said. I downloaded the book on Friday night. But Sunday afternoon, I was finished.What an amazingly true account of what it's like to be a single Christian woman who feels totally forgotten by everyone, even God on occasion. The author was extremely candid and shared her personal struggles. I could definitely relate to her dialogue with God. In the end, the author met the man God was preparing for her. The book ends with her husband sharing his *own* struggles as a single Christian man also in a prolonged waiting phase. He describes his emotional journery during their courtship and what God revealed to him along the way.I say this book changed my life because I believe this was a message from God to me. The author talks a lot about "signs" in the book. I don't expect much in the way of signs from God, but I do think He speaks to us in subtle ways. This book gave me a renewed sense of hope. No, there's no magic answer to this whole relationship thing, but I believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that God is involved in the process of who our spouse should be and if we "surrender the pen" as the author says countless times, God will write a beautiful love story. I don't know about you, but I'm a hopeless romantic and God is probably the biggest Romantic there ever was. I only wish I had a local group of Christian women to discuss this with because it is SO rich. So for anyone in a waiting season and struggling, check this book out and consider surrendering this area of your life. Yes, it is scary. And there's a little doubt in the back of your mind that it will ever really happen. Just keep speaking the Word over your barren situation and believe. Don't forget to thank God for what He's doing. Remember, when you sow a seed, a lot is happening under the surface that you can't see with your naked eye.

It was written very authentically and I'm glad the author's willingness to share so much that was happening in her life while she wrote, was rewarded with being able to share such a detailed story of God's answer and provision in response to her prayers.I have a lot of books about relationships from various angles, topics and issues. Though the highly personal aspects does set it apart, I probably did not glean any information I didn't know before in some manner. What's different about this book is that it's really rare, in my experience, to have an author who will write directly and bravely out of the experience of being a Spirit-filled believer, i.e. one who knows that all the gifts of the Spirit are real and active today and embraces them. The written word of God in the bible is the foremost and main thing of course; but, as someone who has also experienced prophetic words, dreams, and other external confirmations through other believers, it was nice to see this reflected in a book. There are lots of us out there and it's nice to be able to relate.

I’m a life-long runner who is often injured. I live in Texas, don’t make a ton of money as a school teacher, and running keeps me sane. I follow Dr. Metzl through his Inside the Doctor’s Office series on Runner’s World so when I saw this new book I got it right away. It came yesterday and I’m half way through already. What I wasn’t prepared for was the very cool ability to use my smart phone for a virtual consultation on my running questions that supplement the text. Without a doubt this is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen in a book, and I look at books all day long at my job! If you’re a runner I think this book will just knock your socks off with the great illustrations, quality paper (it feels significant when you hold it), and the revolutionary use of augmented reality. Plus, to be honest, it costs way less than my co-pay and the information is more specific for runners. Dr. Metzl is one of us so he doesn’t think we’re insane. I’d highly recommend this book if you run, augmented reality is the future!

Good comprehensive book with a good premise and material, however the videos don't work. The only time I got the Blippar app to work was at the beginning of the book, in the intro. Can't get it to work anywhere else - huge waste of time, I've tried many times. I work with computers and software on a daily basis, and I have a recent smart phone (Galaxy S9) so I know it's not a problem with the hardware.Why not just give us YouTube links that work? Also, I'd much prefer seeing the videos on a larger screen than my phone in any case. I appreciate the effort to pair videos with the book, but this was really disappointing and so far a fail.

Just finished the book, if you are a running this is the book for you, bought one for my daughter, Dr. Metzl covers everything to can imagine, it helped me with running form, and strengthen my lower body, which made me enjoy running even more than I did, does cover all types of injuries', and numerous other topics, how to prepare for a 5K, 10K, 1/2 marathon, etc; etc; one of my running partners also just picked up the book.Great, great book.

I am re reading this book - so much great information - very comprehensive. I love the audio visual parts-a great way to back up the text. The doctor explains clearly; the language is not too technical. He has a great attitude in that he is positive, understanding and flexible. He is a proponent of modifications - thereby making you feel more comfortable about your abilities. I can't wait to read this book again. I have already taken his advice about shortening my stride, using a foam roller.

I recommend this book, which introduced me to strength training. I've been worried about my knees, during running and skiing, and I hope these exercises prevent injury long term. It's great that you really do see an improvement from one week to the next. Don't get discouraged if you feel behind the first time you do the program. It gets easier every time you do it! I'm not sure why traditional sit-ups are included. I thought they had fallen out of favor. Otherwise, this has been a great learning experience. Thank you!

Dr. Metzl give us a crash course in running anatomy and movement patterns, enabling a self-diagnosis and subsequent treatment (or prevention). The knowledge will prove valuable when you DO go see a pro, too. Do the workouts, do the stretching and foam rolling, do the miles and the duration, and keep well while doing so.

This book has some solid tips and good insight into some key running injuries. I don't really know what I was expecting when I got this book because I already am a dedicated runner with a good stride and a solid understanding of my body. Didn't really do much for me but I will refer to it if I get a certain injury I don't know how to deal with.

If we just run without watching form and strength, our bodies are not mechanically balanced. This book gives practical approach to get strength training and avoid injury.If you are already injured it would help you to understand what you need to do to help your balance and overloads in muscles, tendons, bones.I enjoyed having the book on kindle because it has videos that you can watch with the routines and explanations.The only thing I didn't like was the recommendation on eating dairy products as the main source of calcium, you could have collard greens, broccoli, kale, salmon, beans, tofu, etc.

Fencing, in all honesty much like any sport nowadays, is both an art and a science. But it's the only sport that stresses it, which seems to make people talk about fencing more next to the fencing strip, rather than actually fence. The treatment of fencing offered in this book is highly superficial, lacking in actual technical and tactical insight needed in the modern (and no doubt classical) fencing world. It was a charm to read, but didn't contribute significantly to the study of fencing as a whole.

I'm new to fencing, and have joined an excellent school. This book has given me a lot of information on what I should expect from the teachers and how to proceed with this sport. I have a much clearer understanding on what constitutes a proper teaching program, and how to proceed. I bought about 6 books on fencing to guide my progress and this should be required reading. I learned a lot from this. Author really knows what he's talking about. I wish I could study with him.

This book didn't meet my personal needs. I am looking for a book that provides explanations about technique and the author's personal philosophy about the Sport. Instead, I found the book written as if by a fencing coach giving a general outline of what fencing is about. Maybe I expected more because the other ratings were so high.The books that better met my needs were Fencing: Steps to Success and Fencing and the Master. I hope On Fencing by Aldo Nadi will be good too.

The Art and Science of Fencing contains a fairly basic into and description of sport fencing, focusing on the French approach to foil. A full third of the book is dedicated to trying to sell the reader on fencing. In my opinion, if you have bought the book, you're already interested. The text was notably lacking in decent photos or illustrations. There are a couple of pages dedicated to praising the importance of drills and exercises, but there is very little actual description of suggested drills or exercises! On a side note, the author has a very narrow view of fencing, attributing that there was no "real" swordplay until the 16th century. This is admittedly a common bias in the field. However, it blatantly ignores the fechtschules that have documented evidence from the 1400's. The author is not working from experience or research, as describing non-rapier swords as "can openers" is highly inaccurate. Lastly, the author asserts that strength training has no place in a fencing training regime. I suggest that strength training has a place in any athletic endevor and that it is simply a matter of tailoring your program to match your sport. Overall an average introduction for beginning fencers.

It's fun and entertaining to watch Nick try to get to fencing, technique, etc., as he just can't resist "one more story." Even when he titles a chapter "technique," it begins... but before we get to that, here's a story and some history...The past reviews on this book are now out of date. There are plenty of good books (dozens) on all levels of fencing, and even some outstanding DVDs (LEARN FENCING - FOIL - A DVD Beginers Guide to the Olympic Sport of Sword Fighting) is an example, which also comes in a 3 DVD set for foil, epee and sabre. These ship from UK when ordered on Amazon, but the shipping is fast and vendor (Russel Swords) extremely high rated and reliable, and the series is awesome. Even the older (2002) Elaine Cheris book (Fencing: Steps to Success (Steps to Success Activity Series)) is inexpensive, filled with great illustrations, and covers a wealth of detailed technique.At from 5 to 14 bucks, the Evangelista book is worth every penny for the stories alone. Sure, Evangelista is full of himself and his ridiculous pronouncements about the good old days (trying to convince us we should wait a year before picking up a foil and another year before trying a bout!) are way outdated (not only for the impatient young, but also we older fencers who don't have long enough left to live to put off the fun parts). BUT, the stories have a LOT of timeless strategy that can be applied to your current game.For example (p. 247), Nick gives a detailed account of Aldo Nadi's method of not letting even the best opponents get a single strike in. This comes down to pure aggressiveness, controlling the opponent so he only strikes from weakness, and the very modern (for a guy born in 1899) attitude of "attack, attack attack, THEN ATTACK." This is Fairbairn's knife fighting philosophy and I use it in my blade combat courses, which are about real life survival, not just sport.If you're impatient to get to the how, not just the why or deeper strategy, pass on this and get Cheris, Hutton, Agrippa, Paul Wagner, Cohen, etc. (Search Amazon with any of their names and the word fencing). BUT, if you want to deepen your game strategically, the stories here DO give timeless tips, including a few that have even been forgotten by now that will help you both on the street and in competition.I teach knife combat at blade combat dot com and have no relationship with the author, publisher or Amazon, and LP always pays for the books we review.
