The print version of this book would receive the full 5-stars from me, but the e-book version delivered to my Kindle had poorly formatted code and the tables were practically unreadable.The issue with the code is that the font used was not consistently mono-spaced and there were plethora of syntactically incorrect line-breaks. I had to lower my font size to the lowest possible setting and orient the layout horizontally to make the code less chore-some. The code images themselves were so small (although properly formatted A-style code) that I had to strain my eyes. There was no happy medium here: either deal with impractical formatting or ruin your eyesight on the code images. The tables and inline graphics were abysmally small graphics, much like the code pictures.If I had to purchase this book again I would definitely have shelled out the extra money for the print version. I am satisfied with the content but not the formatting of the e-book version, and will be looking forward to an update to the e-book version.

This text is an excellent reference, tutorial, and even a refresher for the advanced. Definitely a keeper.Watchout for bogus paperback editions sold by third party sellers. They are extremely poor quality, and are clearly knock-offs. This was discovered the hard way. Only purchase the Pearson hardback edition through Prime if possible, and verify the ISBN when it arrives. Pearson makes very high quality products, so any quality flaws should serve as a red flag.

The STL is a significantly valuable tool and this book provides the kind of depth necessary to understand a given part. The best part of this book is the 3 level presentation. You have a short, generic presentation of the STL followed by an extensive detailed description that, in turn, has more examples that ensures you can readily and quickly stop and apply what you find when you are ready.I read the first edition from beginning to end and was well informed. I have not done that with the second edition but I have used it as a reference on a Kindle through click indexes, table of contents and searching. It works okay on Kindle classic and Kindle App (search needs some improvement). As a reference, it succeeds well.I do have some problems with the book. I did like the examples provided and I liked the 3 level structure of the book. I just think that in the next edition for C++14 or whatever comes next they can actually improve the 1st level so it reads as well as Bjarne Stroustrups latest book on C++ by way of an excellent tour of the STL. With my detraction, I am still giving the book 5 stars because it is comprehensive, well written and it is usable with the hyperlink technology on the Kindle.

Pros- Nice (but not too long) introduction of the new standard on the first pages of the book.- Lots of subjects: Pairs and Tuples, Smart Pointers, Type Traits, Clocks (chrono), STL Containers, New STL Containers, Iterators, Lambdas in STL, Algorithms, Strings, RegExp, IO Operations, Internationalization, Numerics, Concurrency (async, thread, mutex...).- Straightforward introduction to the particular feature in the beginning of a chapter and advanced, in depth view, at the end.- I was afraid that this book would contain only tables with STL classes/methods. But it is not.- Over 1000 pages! So it is quite hard to read it quick. In such books this is an advantage and means that the author did a great job.Cons- eBook version might have some problems with formatting.- Quite heavy... :) but you can always buy eBook version (if you accept the formatting... :))

As someone who has used the first edition whilst making some software projects work ... when I noticed there was a second edition I thought: does it cover C++ 11. The answer is "Yes it does!"For example, when I had some insuperable difficulties in porting some template code back and forth between Red Hat Linux and Microsoft C++, I found the first edition a lifesaver. Similarly I believe the new edition will do likewise ... on the basis of some selected dipping into this new edition ... Recommended!

I bought the first edition of this book back in 1999, or so. I have used the book heavily. I just had to buy this one, because I know the author does a great job with describing things clearly and concisely. He always provides great examples. I wanted to have his quality of writing and examples for learning the C++ 11 material. I am glad I did. This book lives up to the expectations I have from his previous work.

I was raised in the church this book was written about. The True Light Church in Mint Hill NC. I don't know if you weren't from around Mint Hill in North Carolina if you would find this book interesting. I did though. It answered some of the question I had about my family/church history.

Growing up in the area and not really knowing what had transpired, it was a good way to learn about the events that took place in the True Light Church.

I also grew up in this church. I left approx 40+ years ago and was fascinated to learn the details and background information about specific events that occurred while I attended and after I left. The author appears to have gone to great lengths to relate only what he observed and to present a fair and unbiased viewpoint. I would recommend this book especially to anyone who lives in this area and has been curious about the True Light Church.

I enjoyed reading the inside scoop on 1980s-1990s figure skating. This book covers the judging scandals, the revision of the points system and elimination of compulsories. It gives the inside story on how the system worked at the time and how skaters "paid their dues" if they wanted to move into the realm of the icons such as Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton and others of that era. The AIDS era is covered in great detail as is the homosexuality of many skaters who, at the time, were in the closet. The Kerrigan-Harding scandal is covered and you may find that some of the so-called "ice princesses" were really witches in disguise. The book is informative and very entertaining. The only drawback is the book is written from the 80s-90s years making some of the information out-dated but for the figure-skating buff you will likely enjoy this book. I know I did.

This book is now dated, figure skating is scored quite differently now, then it was when this book was written. The skaters in the book have long since been replaced by a current crop. Not being an "insider", I don't know how the "politics" of figure skating have changed, but I'd suspect that the "politics" is also at least a bit different from when the book was written.Still, the book is an entertaining read into the world of figured skating in the '90's. The book introduces us to personalities and gives us some background on the famous personalities of that time period. It's interesting to contemplate that today's prominent figure skaters were just starting out when this book was written. In that regard, this book provides an interesting look at how today's prominent skaters were raised in the world of figure skating.

Brennan does a great job in bringing the reader into the inside world of figure skating. This book is so well written and enjoyable that I read it several times. It was fascinating reading about the double dealings, backstabbing and intrigue involved in this sport. Brennan also touches on the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding story and debunks the perception most people have about Nancy Kerrigan being "America's Sweetheart." Another fascinating part of this book was the story on the sacrifices parents make for their children for figure skating, and how champion skaters are raised.If you are a figure skater, enjoy sports, or interested in history/politics, you will definitely love this book.

This is Brennan's expose on figure skating, the figure skating of the 1990s, that is. Basically, Brennan finds all sorts of corruption in the highest levels of the sport. Judges trade support for skaters from each others' factions. The Cold War may be over but it was still alive and well in 1990s figure skating, as formerly communist countries aligned as did the US, Canada, and western Europe.Of all the things to say about this book, the most important is that it is out of date. Michelle Kwan was an up-and-coming teenager when this was written. This book was written pre-IJS, and that's only one of the many things that has changed in the sport. While I don't deny that there are still problems and accusations of favoritism, IJS has solved, or at least greatly lessened the kinds of judging problems Brennan illustrates. For the figure skating fan of 2013 this book reads more like a historical document.My main issue was a much more esoteric one. For all the time that she spent researching and reporting on figure skating, I never really felt like Brennan had a deep, emotional connection to the sport. While she recognizes the difficulty of the sport, Brennan just never seemed to have the spiritual attachment that is evident among figure skaters and many fans. I really think this book could have been written more effectively by someone with that emotional attachment. That's why people do this crazy thing, where they whiz around a slippery surface on quarter-inch blades. There's something in the body movements and the music that makes the moment transcendent.

Having just finished this terrifically addictive book, I was thrilled to learn she's written an update and hope she considers writing more skating-related nonfiction in the future. I'll admit I was a bit chagrined to learn she focused pretty much entirely on American figure skaters (seems like Paul Wylie was a primary source for much of her material which is interesting) in this work, but those who she does focus on are fascinating subjects after being touched upon by Brennan's prose. She jumps (pardon the pun) about a bit from skater to skater, but I greatly appreciated the insight into Nancy Kerrigan's history as well as Janet Lynn and Michelle Kwan, to name a few. Her chapter on Christopher Bowman reminded me of how supremely talented he was, and how he didn't know what to do with it all besides fritter it away; it's especially poignant considering his recent demise, which could have been predicted by pretty much anyone who came into contact with him during his skating years. I plan to send my copy of Brennan's "Inside Edge" to my mother as she too has been a longtime figure skating fan, and look forward to seeing what else she touches upon in "Edge of Glory".

Medical care is the real "Risky Business"...the authors perspective is that we are investing heavily in risk reduction, even when the risk of disease for us as individuals is small compared to the known ill affects of many of the treatments offered. Treating disease without the concomitant population benefits is delivering a message we are unprepared to hear...unless of course you read this book.

Bought it as a gift - great book!

Great book to read. Outlines the main issues that can occur when we assume if a little medicine is good then more is better. It is very tough when the test itself might be simple, but the consequences are significant. Each test generates a set of options, each with their own problems and complications.Very clear discussion of what constitutes evidence and what constitutes benefit. Shines a light on how messy medical data can be, particulary the use of end points that may or not have any relationship to life expectancy or quality (cholesterol numbers)As a specialist in urology I have a couple of quibbles with Dr Aronowitz, who is a primary care doctor. The evidence for PSA testing between 55-70yr suggests minimal benefit. In response urologists are trying to get data on 45-55 yr who we think would gain more benefit.What is not discussed to such great detail is the legal framework doctors work within. A specialist carries more legal risk than a PCP. Therefore until society accepts there are risks and they are never zero testing will happen. It does not matter when the evidence shows more testing and imaging leads to fewer lawsuits against specialists.

Robert Aronowitz does a masterful job in articulating a central and generally unrecognized problem which pervades contemporary health care delivery. We have moved from emphasizing treatment of disease and suffering to attempting to mitigate risk. Unfortunately, most of those involved do not recognize the differences between being afflicted by disease (a bad outcome in and of itself) and being at risk for disease.

The central premise of this well-written book is that modern medicine emphases treating risk, which has fundamentally changed how disease is defined and treated. The author points out that much of the emphasis on treating risk can be attributed to economic incentives. Providing products that treat risk (instead of disease) opens up vast new markets for pharmaceutical companies.The important thing to remember is that no intervention is void of side-effects, but this doesn't mean all interventions/tests are always bad either. I wish this book had provided a bit more practical knowledge in terms of which tests/procedures are on shaky grounds.

The other characters are important to the story, even seeming adversaries. The author even throws in some shocking twists that change the arc of the story in surprising ways. For young graphic novel aficionados this is a thoroughly engaging series with great characters and great plot twists. Highly recommended.

Another great installment in the Cleo series. The characters are imaginative and the worlds have depth and whimsy. My son loves these books and adults can appreciate them as well.

A lot of the puzzle pieces really start coming together in this one. Cleopatra just keeps getting better and better. And did I mention the amazing sets/locations? Some of these pages you could look at for days and days. Mr Maihack's work is as stunning as ever.

My daughter is a huge fan of this action series starring a time travelling Cleopatra who is more Lara Croft than your typical princess.

My 9 year old daughter LOVES this series. She gets a (tiny) bit of history and sees a strong girl taking action; she even looks a bit like her! I love that she's found something that she is excited to read and it's not all princesses waiting to be saved. The graphic novel format also allows my younger daughter to flip thru the book and "read" it as well!

My daughter and I both love this series! The story line is fun to read and the illustrations are great

Parts of this book have not been updated. Form 8829 for 2018 is different than 2017 - this book does not take into account the line changes in part 2. Took me awhile to figure it out and now I can’t trust that this book is reliable for the 2018 tax year.

I can’t afford an accountant so it’s really important for me to know all I can about all the different deductions and this book is a huge help!

This book is a must have if you are doing your own taxes in this industry.
