This was a great disappointment, and I am sending it back. The pictures don't do justice to this spectular city at all. They are all very close in which is fine for the Bapistery doors, for instance, but the reader gets no - I mean NO - sense of the river and bridges, the vista of the Duomo, etc. The rhymes are worthless - "Donatello...a famous artist and quite a fellow" - I'm sorry to say, providing nothing to inform the young audience. Also, I'm no prude and the "David" is one of my favorite statues in the world, but I'm not sure close ups of this - twice! - in a children's book is really the place to focus. Lastly,to have misspellings of key names is unacceptable - the "Uffize" Gallery and "Da Vince", REALLY? Apologies to the authors - the idea of a children's travel book is great - but this one totally missed the mark.

A refreshingly different picture book with historical and geographical information. The simpler poetry is what keeps this history lesson moving right along and my 3 (yes, three!) year old engaged to the end. I'm thrilled! There are more scrubbed up, formal geography books for kids. I've seen them; I own some. But, the kids I read this geography series to (from Penelpe Dyan) eat it up and ask for more! I have had this experience before with well-know publishers of children's reading material, when it baffles my adult brain what could possibly be so engaging to my kids... whatever that "it" is, this book has it. I have a ton of books by this author and my toddler loves them. I grew up on poems like the ones contained in the authors books and I only wish I could write them as well as the author does. My mother used to make up poems for me as a child. These books bring back memory's of the cute poems that my mother made for me on an almost daily basis. I love being able to share them with my toddler.

Short and sweet, these books tell a lot in the pictures. Kids giggle at the silliness of the text. I keep them on hand in my classroom. When I'm teaching about a place in the world covered by one of Dyan's books, I know I'm going to get a great picture to put up on the doc-cam. I am particularly taken with the cover photo of a tapestry. I noticed that the pictures are of things that caught my eye when I was visiting some of these places but the photos are so much better than mine. I like the large pictures and the depth and perspective they give. The book on Florence is one of my personal favorites. Each of the travel books gives a great "snapshot" of wonderful locations in the world. When my students tell me they are going to one of those places or just came back, we pull out the book for that place. The other day, one student was reading about Florence and another called out, "Do you have one on Mexico?" Well, it doesn't look like there's one yet, but I'll be watching for it. These books are a nice addition to my classroom library.

I have taken 11 grandchildren to Italy and any one of them could write a better book on Florence than this one. If there was an editor, s/he napped every few pages right through the typos. The pictures are of generally poor quality and the text can certainly not be called poetry. For instance, how about "The Uffize (sic) Gallery has many statues outside, And Florence is where once Galileo did reside, This is his statue that you can see, Looking as wise as once was he." Flip to the Duomo: "You can see the Duomo on the walk, And you may even stop and gawk. Because this is something that withstood time, Something that is quite sublime." Each of the 17 pages of text has one of these little gems in the middle of lots of white space, and that's what you paid for.I'm perfectly serious when I write that this is possibly the worst example of a book I have ever seen on any subject. Reviews on Amazon are not my habit, but I am a fervent patron and felt it was my duty to steer the rest of the Amazon family away from this useless book.

I agree with the first reviewer. The poetry in this book is utterly strange. The opening line reads, "To get to Florence you can take a train, After you arrive in Venice by plane". HUH???I could have quoted the whole bizarre book but that would have been too painful.

Nice quality, quick delivery

Book arrived in really good condition.

This book is exactly what I have been waiting for.I started to work as a programmer for Boeing in 1985, went to grad school, worked at a research lab, then am in the academe. Along the way, I have gotten exposed to real-time computing in bits and pieces on a good number of projects. But none of them required me to get very deep into real-time computing, and I have never had a class in it. But I have been meaning to learn more, and in a systematic way, for some time.So, from that context, it was with great anticipation that I learned of Prof. Kopetz's new edition (2ed). He is without question one of the top researchers in the area of fault-tolerant real-time computing, based on his long record of publishing in DSN and other top publication venues. He has worked with the auto industry literally for decades, and has recently branched out. So is is very applied and "down to earth". Ergo, my anticipation.This book did not disappoint this applied practitioner, researcher, and instructor. It had the gamut of topics, with a focus on time-triggered technologies, ranging from global time, models, fault-tolerance, real-time communication, real-time operating systems, and scheduling. All concrete and "meaty" topics. There were also a number of topics that seem very important to architecting and engineering a real-time system, including simplicity (that one surprised me, but made a lot of sense in hindsight), system design, and validation. It also had good material on very timely applied research concerns: an entire chapter on the "Internet of Things" (IoT), and "cyber-physical systems" issues were spread throughout the book.I strongly recommend this book for either practitioners who, like me, need or want to learn more about real-time systems (and more systematically than one could learn by a smattering of tutorial and research papers). I also would recommend it for a senior undergraduate or a graduate class. Indeed, I may use it for half of the material in a seminar class next school year, depending on how I decide what topics I really want to cover.

As a graduate student,I used this book for work on real time communication and time triggered architecture.I must say,the book is very well organised and easy to read. The concepts presented in this book are all practical and very helpful for real time system practioners. This book also helps students to gain overall understanding of the real time systems and ongoing research projects. I found the chapters on Real time model, real time communication and time triggered architecture very helpful for my research and the case studies on different time triggered architecture were very useful. If you are looking to dive into real time systems or taking a course on real time concepts or want to enhance your knowledge on real time system to take your research to next level, I highly recommend this book for you.

I am a grad student and recently read through most of this book. I enjoyed the time that I invested. The book is readable and provides a thorough expose of the issues that I wanted to learn in order to continue with my research. The book is well organized, the front part does a good job describing the concepts that are needed to understand the rest of the book, and most of the book discusses subjects other than OS. I liked the cross-references that were provided to earlier sections and chapters, so that as I read the book over several weeks, I could refresh my memory about something that I had gone over earlier and tie things together. The illustrations are well conceived and helpful. There are a few typos in the English version that the editor should have caught, but they don't interfere with the book's readability or its worth. I recommend this book.

My 8 year old LOVES these graphic novels. She tends to be a reluctant reader but recently she has discovered and fallen I love with the graphic novel genre. This was one of the first ones to catch her fancy. The Princess Candy stories are very cute and age appropriate. I wish they add to the series.

My oldest daughter is almost seven years old, and she is an avid reader. She prefers graphic novels to chapter books. Our town library has a large selection of children’s graphic novels, and she always finds nice things to read. She found the first Princess Candy book at our town library, and then she asked me to request the sequels from the library network.The Marshmallow Mermaid is a book in the Princess Candy series, which are written by Michael Dahl and illustrated by Jeff Crowther. The Marshmallow Mermaid might be the second book, but it’s not very clear. It helps readers to read Sugar Hero so that they understand Princess Candy’s origin story, but that’s probably not mandatory.In this story, a mysterious creature is seen leaving the swimming pool in search of food- and the creature finds marshmallows. Later, Halo saves a boy named Cody when marshmallows appear all over the hallway. Cody is allergic to eggs and gelatin! Later, when Cody disappears, and Halo meets the Marshmallow Mermaid- the mysterious creature!- she knows that she is going to need to become Princess Candy again so that she can save her friend!This is a short book, and it is written at reading level “K”, or grade level 1.6. My daughter is an advanced reader, but it’s nice to find graphic novels that are written for younger children.The illustrations are bright and colorful. Halo has pink hair, and the “special effects” when Halo turns into Princess Candy are great! The Marshmallow Mermaid was also very well drawn- she’s got stringy hair, fangs, and claws. She scared me a little!I would absolutely recommend The Marshmallow Mermaid. My daughter loved reading the book, and she loves this series. It’s great to see girl superheroes, and it’s wonderful that this series is written for new readers, but appeals to more advanced readers as well.

I am a third grade teacher, and I bought this book to appeal to a little girl in my class who is a very low reader. She loves these books because they look and feel like big kid books, their stories are interesting enough to hold an 8 year old's interest, and the other kids like to read them too. This is very important for low readers--she got to recommend it to other kids and be the go-to person for the Princess Candy books, and nobody seemed to notice or care that they were easy. What a refreshing change from being stuck on Henry and Mudge when everyone else is reading Roald Dahl books!

This book is horrendous. I would give it negative stars if possible. The premise behind this book is chilling if you have half of a brain to see the implicit messages being implanted in young children's minds. The main character is admittedly a loner who doesn't have friends, she finds a bottle of "candy" (drugs) and wonders what will happen if she takes them. To escape her problems she takes said "candy" and proceeds to have hallucinations about a demon mermaid that terrorizes the school. If you love this book then I suggest you start using your brain to see what is really being tought here...it is not innocent "fun".

Before getting this book I had already created a moderately successful mod (Doomlike Dungeons) for Minecraft 1.5.2 and updated it to versions 1.6, 1.7, and 1.8 of the game, as well as a couple smaller mod (one of which is silly and will never be released, the other is hidden in my Adventrues of the Ancients modpack to round things out and tie them together). The description of Java concepts is a bit awkward and simplistic, but for Minecraft and Forge related material is quite good. It would have been nice to have had this when I first started learning to mod.Now, for a complaint I've see: this is for 1.7.10, not the latest 1.8 version of the game. Well, any book you get will likely be behind when or soon after its release -- new updates keep coming out, and probably will as long as people keep buying the game. The good news is this: Once you know how to do something with one version you have a good starting place for figuring out other versions, even if the new (or older) way is a little different.On another key point is Java language and programming in general. You actually can create simple mods without really knowing Java by just following instructions by rote. But, learning Java will pay off greatly -- when you understand Java many things that might seem arbitrary start to make sense. Knowing Java also lets you begin reading the Minecraft soruce code itself and going beyond what others tell you in books, videos, or other sources. An understanding of Java will give you far more freedom and power, allowing more creativity in your mods. Therefore I would recommend a book like Teach Yourself Java in 21 days (or 24 hours) for those with know programming experience and younger readers. The freely available Java tutorials from Oracle are also very good if you have some programming experience. If you really want to fully unleash you creativity the book Game Programming Patterns and a beginning book on algorithms and data structures and/or game programming will take you to the next level. Without and understanding of data structures and algorithms Doomlike Dungeons would not exist.All around I would recommend this book to anyone starting out modding Minecraft, but again, not without a beginning Java book unless you are already a Java programmer (fortunately I was).

Would give it five stars if they supported Minecraft 1.9 on their support site. My son loved it until the point on how to modifying a food item which errors out since the book and their website only supports Minecraft 1.8 and my son is using version 1.9. Since the book was less than a year from being published I assumed incorrectly it was current and also since it provided access to online code updates I assumed the author would keep the code base current but that is not the case.If not supporting newer minecraft versions it would have been nice to have a page or 2 explaining when the parameter list of a function changes how to look up the updated function call to know what to put in the parameter list.

Sam's teach yourself covers every aspect needed to creatr a fully functional mine craft mod. I came in with no experience except some basic java and by the time I had finished the book I felt comfortable with all the aspects covered. The examples are well explained and the pace suits all levels of Java experience.highly recommended!!!

The book is really helpful in learning how to mod Minecraft 1.7.10. I have been adding 5 items into my mod within an hour. It's really good at explaining how to do things and makes a legitimate attempt at trying to explain Java coding. How ever though, I think it would be a good idea to watch some tutorials online Java tutorials as we'll maybe as you read the book. It's not the author's fault, it's more the subject matter. Anyway though, it's a lot more fun (and easy) than trying to learn by yourself.

Exactly what I was looking for, it covered how to use Forge to make basic mod changes, and provided a reference for conventions used. It pays to at least have a comp sci 1 background in Java though.

Good book

not that easy for kids

My kids were constantly asking me to download Minecraft mods. When one of their computers became infected I put a stop to the mods. One day while my son was begging me for a mod he had found I challenged him to build his own. I found this book and purchased it and we have been working through it together. My son is 9 and I have very little programming experience but we have had fun going through the exercises together. We are only on the third chapter but we have already learned so much and can't wait to learn more.
