Classic! A Mapplehorpe ‘must have’ for your collection.

I was introduced to Robert Mapplethorpe sometime in the early 1990's, and his art and humanity have stuck with me since. I am a heterosexual Black male, and I find his homo-erotic images to be quite affecting. His graphic photography involving male genitalia and overt sexuality, seem to be saying "this is my lifestyle and my art. You can't say you love my art if you aren't willing to engage this content". I agree with him.Some might protest the "objectification" of Black males in the book. The energy of the men in the photos seem to suggest that it was a collaboration and that to some degree all photography involves the objectification of the person being being photographed. I read John Paul Jackson's book years ago and this book pays homage to the points Jackson made, and just as steadfastly.So many people rushing into battle without the slightest thought or understanding of foundational truths....the most important being...'were they sent into THAT battle??!!....Spiritual battle is inevitable, being equipped and standing ready for YHVH's direction is the key to winning those battles.Stomping off into a battle that one is not a) called to or b) equipped for is a surefire recipe for disaster, personally and spiritually.Let's hope people read and heed.

I had once picked up the book, "Needless Casualties of War" oft referred to in this book and, testing the spirits, was compelled to put it down directly and quickly. This book makes the correction of major errors in that book and doing so is of great consequence for the Body of Christ. It is kind and sensitive but it sets straight the importance of Christians giving their focus, trust, and reverence to the one true completely victorious Lord rather than fearing the demonic realm. Brenneman walks the walk and exudes the truth that we worship what we fear yet the Lord Jesus Christ has completely disarmed the enemy of our souls so that we need not fear standing against him. We do it from our vantage point that Paul described plainly as "seated with our risen Christ in heavenly places". This means we never forget we are the 'light of the world' and that darkness cannot remain in the presence of light--that is the glorious resurrection light of Christ. It is a fairly quick and clear read. Do yourself and loved ones a favor and read it. You will realize the "peace that passes all understanding".

A must read for those wondering where to draw the line on your authority when dealing with demons and spiritual beings. This book is a great eye opener. I loved this book.

At some points I found it a bit argumentative, but I guess that is the point of the book; to argue against some of John Paul Jackson’s conclusions. Great food for thought. I would recommend this as reading after Needless Casualties of War to consider a different perspective to spiritual warfare.

Too much criticism of others viewpoints; to the point that unless you have read the books/topics others are telling you NOT to believe or do You will be lost.

The huge oyster stores contributed mightily to the mercantile wealth and natural renown of New Amsterdam, then inherited by the British, who were crazy about oysters; pickled oysters became an important trade with British West Indies slave plantations. While cheap, oysters appealed equally to the rich and poor, prompting famous establishments such as black-owned Downing's oyster cellar and Delmonico's (the enterprising author handily supplies historic recipes). The exhaustion of the city's oyster beds and pollution by sewage effectively eclipsed the consumption of local oysters by the 1920s, yet the lowly oyster still promotes the health of the waterways by its natural filtering system as well as indicating the purity of the water. Oysters thrived there for centuries in enormous populations that were easily harvested, literally by the armful. When Western explorers led by Henry Hudson arrived in the early 1600s, gifts offered by initially friendly Native peoples included welcome supplies of the shellfish, a longtime favorite food item in Europe. (One of several dozen recipes in the book is a Middle English description of cooking Oystres in grave, dating from the 15th century.) The succulent bivalves became internationally famous and were popular with both rich and poor; specialized eateries, the city's famous oyster cellars, were established to meet the demand. The market for oysters boomed and kept booming–until waterfront pollution destroyed the abundant beds. In Mark Kurlansky's wonderful book, The Big Oyster: History on the Half Shell we learn about the bivalve bounty that once existed off the shores of Manhattan. Kurlansnky writes, "By 1880, New York was the undisputed capital of history's greatest oyster boom in its golden age, which lasted until at least 1910. The oyster beds of the New York area were producing 700 million oysters a year."The first blow to oyster production was sewage. "The reality is that millions of people produce far too much sewage to co-exist with millions of oysters...A million times worse than pollution happened. The silt and sludge alone would have been enough to kill oysters, which would sink in it and suffocate. But the industrial wastes consisted of heavy metals, including seven thousand pounds of zinc, copper, lead chromium, and nickel that entered the city sewer system every day...Between the 1940's and the 1970's, General Electric dumped hundreds of thousand of pounds of polycholorinated biphenyls, PCBs, into the Hudson..Concentrations of six heavy metals were found in the 1980's in the central muddy portion of the bay (Raritan). They had entered the water from the many factories built on the Raritan Rover during World War II. With the sentiment "anything for the war effort," these industries were allowed to freely dump into the river, and the practice continued after the war. In 1978, Raritan Bay was found to have the highest concentration of hydrocarbons. Fish in the bay were found to be laced with PCBs. The fish were often misshapen by a pollution-caused disease known as "fin-erosion disease." The Big Oyster.World War II was the most destructive war in the history of mankind claiming the lives of around 60 to 70 million casualties worldwide; another casualty was the oyster beds of New York. America's Military Industrial Complex may have knocked off Hitler and Tojo, liberated the Nazi and Japanese concentration camps, but it also has the death of billions of oysters on its hands as well. I bought and read this book after hearing Adam Boyd speak at a recent industry training event in Austin, TX.I found this book to be an easy read, full of short summaries of about a dozen Sandler customers that the authors have worked with. What I valued most from reading this book is that it shows the success that is possible by following the Sandler principles, it has lead me to identify some of the causes of my own hindrances (self-doubt, for example) and a reminder that Sandler offers a proven process, and a process is what can help a person perform consistently. There is a saying often repeated in my office, "Put good people in a bad process, and the process will always win." This book showed example after example of how people can succeed by using a good process (Sandler) and how good people have failed by trying to move ahead without a process.

This book captures a lot of great wisdom and real life stories about how to use the Sandler sales system to prospect, qualify, and close new business successfully.I have been studying with Karl and Adam at Market Sense in Austin, TX and using the Sandler system for 3 years. During this time Adam Boyd has been my coach.Despite my baseline familiarity with the Sandler material I found a lot of great ideas in this book and found it very inspiring.You may be wondering, does this stuff really work? Here were my results...Pre Sandler:- $150-250k per yearPost Sandler:- 1st Year in Sandler - $1 M- 2nd Year in Sandler - $2M- 3rd year in Sandler - $1.5 mid-year/trending to $3MIt wasn’t always easy or comfortable but my rapid improvement evidences that the advice from Karl and Adam captured in this book really work. As Karl and Adam shared in the book, sales can be a daunting undertaking and I had to deal with call reluctance, head trash, self-limiting beliefs, and stressful moments when I screwed things up. Through it all the mantra of Sandler to seek disarmingly honest communication helped me overcome and thrive in my selling career.I highly recommend this book for anyone starting out in sales or someone who has had success but wants to reach even higher levels in their sales career. 5 stars in my opinion and you will easily recoup the purchase price by closing an extra deal once you implement some of the ideas in this book.The tips on journaling alone will pay for the book in the first month.

There is always room to improve and their book will show you a path to improved sales, a more positive outlook and greater happiness.If you are in sales, this short and easy-to-read book is a must read. You won't regret it.

También hay una especie de bosquejo al final de cada capítulo en donde se detalla otras Teologías Sistemáticas que hablan del tema en cuestión, organizadas por su denominación o afiliación teológica.El Dr. Grudem escribe desde una perspectiva Cristiana histórica, Reformada y ortodoxa. Sus creencias carismáticas son evidentes en los capítulos acerca de los dones. Aunque personalmente estoy en desacuerdo con ésto último, es la mejor defensa del carismatismo conservador que he leído.En cuanto a la traducción, hay algunas cosillas por aquí o allá que me desesperan, por lo general son errores gramaticales como puntos o comas mal puestos. Este libro es una joya poco común. El estilo de escritura es clara y entendible. El contenido es plenamente bíblico. Se trata temas que han surgido en el último siglo. No estoy completamente de acuerdo con la interpretación del autor en cuanto a los dones de señales (lenguas, milagros, profecías) ni con su perspectiva del futuro (no cree en el rapto ni la gran tribulación venidera de 7 años, aunque sí es premilenario). Sin embargo, lo demás es tan claro y sabio que lo estoy usando para dictar la clase de escuela dominical en la iglesia que pastoreo. Si solo pudiera comprar un libro de teología sistemática, sería éste.

Todo Cristiano debiera leer este excelente material, no importando si en algunos puntos no estés de acuerdo con el, porque los temas son tratados con mucho respeto en las áreas que el escritor difiere con otros teólogos. Es muy agudo y profundo al interpretar los diversos puntos teológicos de la biblia y al mismo tiempo el lenguage no es muy complicado.

Great book, well written, simple yet profound.Wayne Grudem has complied a one volume systematic of the Christian Faith without being overly bulky, or overly brief in coverage, all-in-all this book proves to be clear and assessable material.I bought this for a new believer friend from Mexico, and was told by his wife the next day that he stayed up until the early hours of the morning reading. He was so happy to be able to have a one volume book that covered all the key doctrines and answered all the questions that he had regarding the Christian Faith and the Bible.Presented as Questions and Answers, each section has been made available in a practical hands-on format for immediate application.

This is one of the must completed books so far in Spanish, lots of details and information. If you are serious in your study of the Bible, this book covers all the major theology themes in a detail manner.I'm not very happy with the interface. It is difficult to go back to the main index and look for a specific title. I will like to have an easy access to the index and a more detailed table of contents and links to the sub themes in each chapter.Other than the technical difficulties, the book content is excellent.

I started reading this book after watching a few of Josh's YouTube videos, finding him through his association with the Vlog Brothers, and wanted to learn more about his story.The story itself is good enough, but Sundquist's writing style leaves a lot to be desired.Personally having a great deal of formal and informal education in writing, I can't help but think that Sundquist's editors did him a disservice by allowing him such excessive creative freedom. The book, while chronological for the most part, is not divided into understandable sections and instead uses new chapters to signify the passage of time. This results in the narrator repeating time markers throughout the first few pages of every single chapter. This is irksome and distracting.Sundquist narrates the book by channeling the age he was during the events of that section. By this I mean, when he is nine and learns he has cancer he is explaining the situation as though he is still nine. However, adults have a horrible time speaking the way we think we did as children, so for the majority of the time that Sundquist uses this technique it feels as though he is speaking down to his audience.In conjunction with feeling spoken down to, he also describes, at length, everyday objects or situations. It is clear that he is trying to convey his innocence and the sheltered life that he lead as a child, however it's not well executed. There is no need to droll on for a page and a half about how he did not understand what a wine glass was and go into vague detail describing the glass' shape and structure. A simple, "and Dad had to explain that these things were wine glasses..." would have been more good enough. I feel that the story was twice as long as it is, purely for unnecessary detail and description.Writing style aside, the last third of the book is disappointingly sparse. We spend the majority of the book learning Josh's struggle with cancer and personal acceptance, cheering him on through the pages only to get to the exciting climax of the book and... skip the climax.We are preparing to see Josh's struggle to make the US Paralympics Ski Team, we see him cross the finish line as an unlikely victor, and then... we skip ahead past the other, more crucial races to help him qualify. Then after the opening ceremony to the Paralympics, we are rushed through every event. If the first two thirds of the book was filled with unwanted detail, the last third was missing desperately desired information. I wanted to see Josh succeed and discover himself through his skiing, but was left finishing the last page feeling sorry for a kid who seemed to be more lost and confused than ever before.TR;DRIn the end I feel like this is a story of a boy who gets cancer, loses a leg, and replaces his limb with hubris. Though poorly written and challenging to read because of it, there are still beautiful moments in the book though they are few and far between. My advice: follow Josh on YouTube and pass on the book. He's a better speaker than a writer.

Josh Sundquist is a funny funny man. I've been a subscriber of his YouTube videos for a while now (Game of Thrones for Math Nerds is great, as is his advice on how a man should choose and wear a suit), and I bought his book to get a background for the videos I have enjoyed so much. It succeeds on every heartwarming, cringe-inducing, literally laugh-out-loud-and-quote-to-your-friends level.Sundquist narrates his life story (from early childhood to just after his experience with the Paralympics in Italy) with characteristic humor and optimism, and plenty of subtle surprises. For example, as the Josh in the story ages, Josh the author uses a more mature voice. The author always remains in the background, though, selecting just the right details for the reader to see the hilarious big picture. For example, when Josh of about ten years old is in the hospital after his amputation, a resident makes an embarrassing mistake and covers by claiming to be late for a meeting he just remembered. The reader has no doubt that the doctor is lying, and Josh the author gives enough information for us to be very clear on that point, but the young Josh in the story shares how there's a positive side to everything, and maybe even a really embarrassing moment can help you remember a meeting for which you were running late. It's a perfect blend of innocence and wisdom, and there is really no point in the book where Josh the author loses the perfect balance of that blend.What I love the most about this inspirational book is that, despite the protagonist's aspirations as a motivational speaker, the book never really stoops to blatant attempts to inspire. Yes, Josh survives a serious battle with cancer, and he shares his story and heart with open hands, letting the reader choose what to take from the telling. Yes, Josh has some amazing romantic disasters, but he doesn't preach about relationship values - the reader just gets to share space with him as he struggles. Yes, Josh experiences impossible challenges as an amputee, but Josh the author has a remarkable sense for when his status as an amputee is relevant to a story and when he just needs to focus on how his unique personality brought about a certain turn of events. Yes, Josh the author seems to recognize the absurdity of many of the rules in his loving and strict homeschooling family, but he neither criticizes his parents nor admonishes the reader to accept or reject a certain kind of faith, even saving his own personal statement of faith for a gentle moment near the end of the book. This book really is an author telling his story in a powerful way to connect with readers, and I can recommend it (and Sundquist's YouTube channel) for anyone looking to be inspired with hope for humanity.

This book's cover is similar to one of Chuck Klosterman's. The publishers couldn't have been unaware of this, but other than being nonfiction (and written by someone younger) I wondered what a sports memoir could have in common with his work, or why this book was endorsed by the dude who read the Encyclopedia Britannica.After reading it, I see what they were hinting at. Cancer and the Olympics are compelling threads, but what makes this story is how it's told. His voice has the intelligence and self-deprecation of A.J. Jacobs, (though Sundquist actually manages to be funny) and the heart and gentle satire of Donald Miller.He shines particularly when writing from the perspective of his nine-year-old self. The seeming randomness of the decisions of the adults around him is more terrifying than the disease. The narrative falters when he becomes a teenager--he seems more simpleminded than he does as a nine-year-old. I work with middle-schoolers, so that fell a bit flat for me.Particularly poignant is his weird homeschooling background. Even before he's diagnosed, he longs to wear a uniform--the ultimate symbol of being like everyone else. I enjoyed seeing his ultra-conservative parents bend (though not break) their standards to indulge him, but Sundquist never indulges himself. His status of "survivor" is handled with a complexity I didn't expect.It's funny that so many reviewers caution you to wait until you have plenty of time to devote to this book. It shouldn't be that suspenseful. Obviously he doesn't die. Obviously he gets to the Paralympics. But his style makes you feel more like a listener than a reader, and like most good storytellers, he's hard to walk away from.
