This book contains everything that an experienced kayaker needs to know to plan a trip to Alaska's Inside Passage. For those who already know where they want to paddle, the first chapter and apendices still provide great local information and advice on gear, clothing, and techniques that are most appropriate for this area. Anyone who will be paddling in these waters should read these sections of the book not only because they will answer many of the difficult logistical questions but because they will make your trip safer and more enjoyable while helping reduce your impact on the area. For those seeking ideas on where to paddle, the rest of the book offers a wealth of suggested routes without getting so specific that you lose all sense of personal discovery.As a sea kayak guide based in Gustavus I have paddled most of the northern routes described in Jim Howard's book over the past 20 years and I can report that his descriptions and advice are current and accurate.Something that really bothers me about some guidebooks I have seen is that they name specific campsites and suggest day-by-day itineraries for a few selected routes; they are like a journal of the author's trip. This approach leads to over-use of a few areas and sites and diminishes the sense of discovery that is one of this wild area's greatest attractions; following one of those guidebooks is more like taking someone else's trip than one's own. Not only that, but many of the best sites along a route are (thankfully) NOT named in those guidebooks, so kayakers can have a better trip by ignoring those authors' detailed suggestions.Jim Howard took a different approach. His routes cover most of the region and for each he gives a description of the area and an assessment of the difficulty of the trip. He names the hazards and gives helpful logistical advice and a general description of the route. This is just what I look for when visiting a new area. I want to know whether I am getting in over my head and how to get to the area. I don't want to know exactly where someone else paddled and camped and what they saw. Finding my own campsites, wildlife viewing areas, and special places is what sea kayaking in a wild place is all about.Because Southeast Alaska is a wild place with plenty of hazards far from help, it's wise to have solid sea kayaking skills if you are alone or leading less experienced paddlers here. Therefore, this book doesn't cover basic sea kayaking and navigation. Beginners will need to find this information in one of the many other general sea kayaking books and by going with experienced paddlers.Jim Howard does an excellent job of giving helpful area-specific information while preserving opportunities for wilderness self-discovery. I can tell he's explored the area thoroughly and talked to lots of local folks. Get this book if you're coming here.

We referred to the book on our trip to Alaska last summer. It is a nice bood. I give a 4 because the grading that was given to the trips should have been a bit clarified. Any trips that take you away from the city are at least for intermediate level. We just started kayaking, and did the Glacier Bay. If we went simply by the grading in the book, we might not have done it, but since we were taking our own kayak all the way from the rockies, we really wanted to do G.B. I think the intermediate (or difficult) rating is more for the fact that the trip took several days and requires camping in the back country, and less about the actual kayaking. Yes, you need to have back country experience. We had to search for fresh water, so it helps to know how to read the land; deal with wild life so that helps to; and of course you need to be able to take your kayak up high enough so its still there in the morning, but beyond common sense stuff, I actually didn't think it was an intermediate/difficult level. I just wish it was made more clear in the book. Otherwise, all other information was helpful!

This is a well-written book that will help the reader prepare for kayaking in Southeast Alaska. Recommended and well done.

About the Author

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in April, 1564, and his birth is traditionally celebrated on April 23. The facts of his life, known from surviving documents, are sparse. He died on April 23, 1616, and was buried in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford.  A. R. Braunmuller is Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California at Los Angeles. He has written critical volumes on George Peele and George Chapman and has edited plays in both the Oxford (King John) and Cambridge (Macbeth) series of Shakespeare editions. He is also general editor of The New Cambridge Shakespeare.  Stephen Orgel is the Jackson Eli Reynolds Professor of the Humanities at Stanford University and general editor of the Cambridge Studies in Renaissance Literature and Culture. His books include Imagining Shakespeare, The Authentic Shakespeare, Impersonations: The Performance of Gender in Shakespeare’s England and The Illusion of Power.

“Coriolanus” is a Shakespeare that I feel is underappreciated. Like in his “Julius Caesar”, the Bard has captured the momentum and the irony of political life in a manner that is celebratory and derisive at the same time.I gave "Coriolanus” a 4 star rating compared to other Shakespeare, not to literature as a whole. The Bard is in a class of his own.In this edition the Introduction by Jonathan Crewe includes intriguing ideas about homoerotic hyper masculine warrior culture and also speaks of the play’s significance in a Roman and contemporary (Shakespeare’s contemporary-early 1600s England) context. However, it is a long intro and a little heady at times and not a particularly enjoyable read. But, it was a valuable read.The plot of this text (in short) is that Coriolanus is a warrior hero of Rome and is in line for the Consulship (leader) of Rome, but tradition has it that he must go to the common folk and ask their permission. This is a task he is loath to do, and the Tribunes of the people use this against him in stirring up the rabble. And the story takes off from there. As I read this play I kept vacillating between being irritated and admiring of Coriolanus’s blunt honesty and his ridiculous unwillingness to temper his words and thoughts for those he considers social inferiors. Shakespeare is asking us in this play what we prefer from our leaders. Do we want their flattering, their disdain (if they have the skills to lead), etc. It is a very relevant question, especially today. Look at the American election of 2016, or the critics of Canada’s Prime Minster who find his policy lacking but his personality thriving. There are many examples all around the world today.The text boasts some interesting characters besides the titular Coriolanus. The two Tribunes of the people are manipulative, but their motives could be pure, the roman senator Menenius Agrippa is a role a skilled actor could leave a mark on, and Coriolanus’s relationship with his archenemy Aufidius is homoerotic in its language. Then there is Volumnia, the mother of Coriolanus who when she is on stage dominates the play. The recent professional production I saw recognized this fact, and Volumnia was clearly an audience favorite. She is another ambiguous, larger than life character in the Shakespeare canon.The Pelican editions of Shakespeare contain some simple yet informative essays, “Theatrical World” & “The Texts of Shakespeare” that preface every play in this Pelican series. They are worth a read.As for the Pelican Shakespeare series, they are one of my two favorite editions since the scholarly research is usually top notch and the editions themselves look good as an aesthetic unit. It looks and feels like a play and this compliments the text's contents admirably. The Pelican series was recently reedited and has the latest scholarship on Shakespeare and his time period. Well priced and well worth it.

A frustratingly entertaining book that illustrates the ridiculous rules and regulations that forbid you and me to eat what we feel we should be eating to support the health and long term well being of ourselves and our families. Case in point: The FDA states that it perfectly safe and healthy to feed your child Twinkies, French fries and Mountain Dew, but it is illegal to buy raw milk and homemade apple pie from the farmer and his wife across the street.t

Don't let those who give bad reviews based on some of the politics in the book deter you from buying and reading it. I found it hysterical even though the topic is incredibly serious.The title provides everyone an ample opportunity to understand that this isn't a "How to farm" book. Besides, the author pretty much mocks politicians of all stripes, regardless of the silly letter by their elected name. No ideology is left without criticism.In my opinion, this is a modern day "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine, using Agriculture to make very similar points.Wake up America. You stopped being "Land of the Free" many, many sad years ago. And only you can turn it around via the ballot box, and civil disobedience.~h

This book is rapidly circulating around our family. It is very funny and very very maddening. I love Mr. Salatin's clear, logical thinking about ways to produce healthy, tasty farm products without messing up our environment with chemicals, manipulatig DNA, no importing off exotic plants and animals, and so on and on. Nobody agrees with everything someone else says, but this is a fascinating, highly ntelligent man whose words are well worth reading and implementing if you are so inclined.

This book is awesome and an easy read too! Many topics that provide information, various viewpoints, 'food' for thought, and laughter too. Wish Joel would run for president.

Salatin is the owner of Polyface Farms, "the farm of many faces," in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. He was featured in Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma and stole the show as the big-hatted farmer in Farmageddon.He is quite a character. He describes himself as a "Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist" and pulls no punches when explaining his views on how farming should be done and people fed. Chapter by chapter, he explains how one-size-fits-all government regulations designed for large-scale, industrial, monoculture agriculture unfairly limit small farmers trying to serve local communities by providing a variety of healthy food, humanely produced.This is a Must Read for small, entrepreneurial farmers and a Great Read for all freedom lovers. Salatin's good-natured ranting is part of the fun.

I learned a lot from this book- and I thought I knew a fair piece before reading it. This isan entertaining, informative, "must read" for all- everyone should know more about where theirfood comes from and whether they have choices and freedoms. Everyone should also be readingbetween the lines and realize that limitations to "freedom" do not start and stop with food-it extends to health, health care, and other areas of human enterprise... some of which he certainlyalludes to in the book.The author has written a number of other similar books- I wish he would write one that is a compilation of lots of other small farmers AROUND THE COUNTRY: their stories- and also include stories of triumph, because there are smallbattles being won. Where I live we can get anything we want (even bacon!) from small farm cooperativesby buying into the herd, and that doesn't mean we are limited to one animal. We are glad to pay for it,and people are lining up for it. The author describes some pretty limiting scenarios in his state of Virginia, but things are opening up elsewhere, it seems, and it would be good to get these stories shared, and include the stories of local food advocates helping to make it happen. This is a great cause, and I kind of think it is time for this truly genuine spokesman to move it off his farm and into the rest of the country.

The "illegal" things referenced in the title were common family farm practices for centuries until the FDA started making rules to favor Big Ag at the expense of arguably much more wholesome small businesses. A multitude of examples of government overreach and injustice in the land of the free will find sympathetic ears along all points of the political spectrum. Kudos to Joel Salatin for fighting the good fight and shedding light on the plight of small farmers who just want to do things in a local and sustainable way despite bureaucratic obstructionism.

This was a great spooky ghost story. It kept me engaged to the very end. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen the story surprised me! The author captured the Victorian time very well. The main character was really interesting and fleshed out. This was a really unique and unusual horror story. I really recommend it!

A great ghost story. Good story telling and characters. I highly recommend reading this book and Sean Munger's other books as well.

A house that madness built…Anine Atherton marries a wealthy American and he whisks her off to New York in The Gilded Age. She will want for nothing. Money is no object but when the couple arrives at their newly purchased home they discover something is terribly amiss. The caretaker hired to spruce up the house is found dead and hanging from the stairs, leaving nothing behind save a cryptic diary filled with nonsensical gibberish and self-incriminating information. What drove him to suicide and what is the terrible history of this cursed house?Their first night there at their new home, Anine is uneasy and thinks she hears movement and laughter coming from the hall outside her room. The next morning another servant turns up dead and thus begins a descent into madness. Every sound is suspect. No servant will apply for the vacant positions until a negro woman takes a chance, much to the anger of Anine’s husband. He begins to change in violent and negative ways and little by little her perfect new world begins to crumble all around her. Snubbed by polite society without a reason why, she despairs of ever fitting in. Her house, she is certain, is haunted and there is not a moment’s peace to be had.When Anine learns how her husband acquired the house she is mortified. She begins to take steps to counter the growing aggression in the man she thought she loved and attempts to get him to sell the house back to the original owner with some unforeseen consequences that will rock her world to the core.This book was a page turner from the first. From the ghost story in Sweden to the haunted New York property, author Sean Munger does an amazing job of capturing the feeling of the time and the characters. The psychological aspects of the story were amazing. What is a dooplegänger and what does it have to do with the Athertons? You must read on and see for yourself.If you love horror with a touch of the past, then this is the bedtime story for you. I received a copy of Doppelgänger from the publisher in return for an honest review.Anine moves to New York with her new husband, looking forwards to a new life in a new city and a nice new house, life seems to be on the up for Anine. Things aren't as they seem however, there is something sinister in her house and her and her new husband are not being made welcome.This was a pretty decent read. the characters were nicely developed and the scenes and detail of the era were very well described and set out. I feel there could have been a bit more tension in the actual haunting but it was still a good read. The story revolves more around society, life and the times rather than concentrating on the fear and atmosphere that I would have liked to have seen.The book held my attention and I wanted to keep reading to learn what the outcome was. I wasn't a huge fan of the ending, I just don't understand why Anine just accepted the ending in the way she did.

I wanted to like Doppelgänger but I felt disconnected from the characters. The story has a good premise, it’s atmospheric, the house is a scary enough, but none of the characters really connected with me. I couldn’t like the characters, so I didn’t feel much for them. I received a free coyp of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really wanted to like Doppelganger more than I did. It was well written and atmospheric, the house was spooky. It was everything you want a good gothic ghost story to be except,,, And that's the problem. I felt very disconnected from the story. The characters were well written but unlikable to me, so much so I was rooting for the ghost throughout the book. I would give the author another chance based on his descriptions alone but didn't enjoy this 2.5 star read.

Overall, I found "Get Rich With Daily Fantasy Baseball" to be an adequate, if not somewhat familiar introduction to daily fantasy (DFS) baseball rules and strategy. Specifically, the author does a nice job of explaining the different MLB DFS league types and the basic strategies necessary for consistent winnings. The book is also clear and well-written, making it easy for the reader to focus on the substance of the author's arguments and rationale without getting bogged down in arcane fantasy sports lingo. Since this book is geared towards the introductory player, I found it refreshing that the author does not overwhelm the reader with fantasy sports acronyms and jargon unfamiliar to the new DFS player, as so many other fantasy sports books do without ever first defining the term or acronym. In fact, since this is an introductory book, in a later edition I would love to see the author include a list of the most common acronyms and jargon in daily fantasy sports, with a definition of each (perhaps in an Appendix), since these terms are also frequently used in the fantasy baseball forums that a novice or newbie player is likely visit.Regarding a "star" rating, I am comfortable giving it five stars but only for the reader who is new to the daily fantasy baseball world. This is due to its comprehensive coverage of all the basic rules and strategies of the game and, as importantly, the fact that it doesn't oversell itself as the definitive "get-rich-quick" DFS baseball guide. In stating this, however, I would have to say that most of the material covered here is probably pretty basic, or even "common knowledge" to the advanced fantasy baseball participant. So, for the more advanced player this could be a useful reference book, but I'm not sure you'll find many new or innovative strategies here.

Very helpful for a newbie to DFS.

I have been reading many different DFS books that are available for free with Kindle Unlimited. This is the best one I have come across so far. While there is definitely some MLB strategy in here, there is also a ton of DFS strategy listed. This book does a great job of covering the different types of contests available and how to play effectively in each. It also covers lineup management and bankroll management etc. I am not a DFS baseball player, I play other sports, however I found this book to be very helpful.

Basically a rehash of common sense concepts.

Could be better and longer but overall it's very informative and has some very great advice on building your lineups.
