Interesting read, I couldn't put it down, wound up reading it in 2 sessions over 2 days. Mr Dolby provides a very good look at the recent history of the music business and his career in particular which segues nicely into the world of the modern age of wireless which is the dotcom/internet zombie fest of virtual products and data points and vaporware and of course IPO's.This book cost me money, I wound up buying Thomas Dolbies orignal catalog (released on Rhino Records) and the remastered Golden Age of Wireless, but it was a wise investment or at least my ears thought so. Great music that doesn't age quickly, and now I understand the reasoning and circumstances behind it.Heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in music, technology, music business or the technology business. Funny,tragic, engrossing and sometimes romantic, but virtually no nudity and no animals were harmed in the production of this tome. May contain wood pulp and other organic products.

The book was a joy to read. Like so many in their 40s and 50s, Dolby's music was a part of my musical upbringing. So getting a peek behind the scenes of his remarkable career was a real treat. Reading one story after another about his challenges with the music industry, his surreal encounters with the likes of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, and how he managed to shape the digital frontier of music is enough to keep any reader engaged. From his early days, through "Science!" and then on to his experiences with the burgeoning high-tech world of the 90s and beyond with fascinating anecdotes about Bill Gates and others, Dolby keeps the pace moving and never bores the reader. I also wanted to mention how honest he is in this book. He never brags about his successes, but also acknowledges the more difficult elements of his personality. He appears to be immensely humble, but also highly ambitious. If you have any affinity at all for the music of the 80s and 90s, MTV, new wave, the digital revolution on music, or are interested in how one of the pioneers of today's music made his way to various degrees of success, you'll love this read.

I just finished reading Dolby's memoir. For someone who's been a fan of his music for over 30 years, it was a revelation. The book is full of fascinating anecdotes about his early career as a musician, and his later career as a tech entrepreneur. Throughout the memoir he comes across as an artist who refuses to compromise his integrity, a sort of romantic Don Quixote figure crossing lances with the dragons of the music business and e-commerce. Fans of music will gain many great insights into the making of his songs and albums, as well as discovering what he was doing in the many years in between the production of his music. The biggest gap is his childhood--I would have liked to have learned more about what drew him to music, and synthesized music, in the first place, and would have enjoyed reading about his early years traveling around with his archeologist father. Otherwise this is a gem of a book, and should appeal not only to fans of his music, but to people curious about the inner workings of the music industry since the days of '80s synth pop.

I have gotten used to hearing the staple song "She Blinded Me With Science" in the grocery store and as a Dolby appreciator have kept up with some of his subsequent musical output over the past many years and have always been amazed at what a great musician he is. However, beyond the music, you may be surprised to find out that Dolby is a renaissance man and probably very close to a genius. Beyond helping to create electronic music and give rise to EDM, Dolby has been involved with electronic and technological, pioneering that has literally changed our world. It's fascinating to hear about the evolution of the internet and the cell phone from the perspective of a person who was, when started out, basically a rock star who nobody suspected was also a brainiac. Dealing with his distaste for the business side of the music business it's fascinating to watch Dolby deal with the business side of the technology revolution, which makes the music business look like a day at Disneyland. Incredibly well written, apparently without the aid of a ghost writer, which further cements Dolby's reputation as a unique talent. Highly recommend this.

Although Thomas Dolby is best known for his first careers as a musician and producer at the height of the 80's synth pop craze, he has since reinvented himself as a silicon valley entrepreneur, taken a few years off in semi-retirement in his native England, and most recently returned to the US as a professor at Johns Hopkins. To me the most interesting aspect of Dolby's story is how he has managed to do all of this as a largely self educated man from a modest background. Lots of one hit wonders have come and gone in the music industry, but I can't think of another who has followed that up with even more success in business. I can also think of lots of successful silicon valley entrepreneurs, but most of them come from privileged Ivy League backgrounds (you might mention Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, but I'd respond that both of them got into Harvard even if they didn't bother to finish.)Dolby tells his story in a straight forward way, including lots of unflattering details that other autobiographers might have skipped. At times there is too much detail about recording sessions, concert tours, and business meetings, but some of the stories about personalities and events are fascinating.I would have liked to hear more about Dolby's latest reinvention as a college professor and what he wants to work on at this stage of his life.

It has been a decade since I did any detailed work with Oracle and my references were very faded. Once the book arrived I was amazed to find out just how thorough it was. "Oracle PL/SQL Programming" not only covered the usual design of databases, tables, indexes, stored procedures, cursors, and data types but also covered best practices and gave away some typical 'gotchas' that have plagued programmers for years. This book is not only far better at explaining the nature of PL/SQL design than my former references, but it goes into better depth in each area it covers as well. Check out the Array data category, this one alone can save you days of table design for modern program inerfaces. And SQL Server is stuck in the SQL 89 standard and has no way to match modern database data type. At 1500 pages you may think that every possible area of Oracle would be covered. But I did find out that there is still two areas of Oracle programming that this book makes no attempt to address and they are OCI and OCCI. These are the high performance program interfaces to the Oracle database that actually allow faster database interfacing than SQL Server. This astounding result is achieved by using either the C interface( OCI ) or the C++ interface ( OCCI ). The author is right not to include these areas or the book would have expanded to 2500 pages! I have spent two weeks already pulling information off the internet on OCCI( forget finding a book on it ) and I'm not even half way done designing a Windows service to use OCCI across the network.So, now you know what to get. If you intend to spend more than a few weeks designing, updating or interfacing to a post 2010 Oracle databasse, GET THIS BOOK and break into Oracle programming!

This is THE "bible" for Oracle PL/SQL Developers written by Moses himself....Steven Feurestein. Plenty of examples, easy to read and understand logical code. Good for beginners, intermediate and advanced/expert developers.Update: 05/30/2015: I decided to pursue my Oracle Certified Associate Certification for PL/SQL and since I have this book, I decided to read it fully from cover to cover (or at least the bulk of it not including the advanced chapters for the advanced PL/SQL certification). And this book really does explain everything and well, with excellent humorous examples. It really is a "tome" to have.

Excellent book, but with one comment: it implicitly assumes you know Oracle's version of SQL. The discussions and examples are excellent when covering details about the PL/SQL programming language (which, in fairness, is what the book is about). However, since I didn't understand some of the references to the basic SQL language (my experience was with T-SQL), I was left confused in places. The book is probably worth 5 stars if you do understand Oracle SQL already and just want to learn more about PL/SQL. I would give it 5 stars for everyone if the next edition added just a few lines of explanation whenever it currently assume you understand the details about the underlying SQL. Nevertheless, still an excellent book and one I recommend.

There are always 2-3 books every developer has in their area of expertise and if you're using PL/SQL, the Feuerstein book is one of them.I'm not sure how much someone can get out of it if they never did work coding before and you're trying to learn it but I can think of many many times I needed an example for a specific problem and the book had a great example of how to do it.Also I warn people to be careful because especially for the later chapters, they evolve to the answer to the problem and the cognitive method for this book is to follow along to the end to see how it got there - I think to some of the reviewers this is verbose but this really sinks the PL/SQL concept into your brain effectively and in my experience it's clearly worthwhile. I'm amazed (as always) how clear the evolution is if you take the time to follow it.I might also add if you're not doing PL/SQL for work but trying to learn it, the evolution might not make sense it's very obvious to me the author has hard core real experience to approach the topics the way he does it.For people in the field, I'd even say if you're a brand new developer on a job or programmed in something else and are approaching PL/SQL for the first time, the examples are more than clear enough and the opening chapters cover relatively universal and simple concepts so I believe the book is extremely beneficial for beginners as well as very advanced PL/SQL developers.

Good reference

The formatting in this book on the Kindle Fire HD is terrible. The table of contents is hard to read, and spans many pages on the Kindle. The author of this book should do a better job auditing the user experience before publishing the digital format. I am disappointed with this version of the book and will be calling Amazon for a return/refund.

It's a little thick to go through. I've noticed that I had to skip around a bitto understand some of the syntax that was used early on in the book.However, I'm taking a pl/sql class given by Oracle and the review that I did with this bookprior to the start helped me immensely the first few days of class.

If you're looking for a book that can be your reference for every doubt you may have in PL/SQL programming, its syntax and constructions, that's the book for you. The examples are very clear and easy to understand. The author uses examples in both ways, before applying a certain functionality and after applying it, which makes comprehension much better. In case I had no PL/SQL book so far, I wouldn't waste my time buying other ones. There is only one cons: the size and weight of this book. It's not something you'll like to carry in your backpack everyday, but keeping in your shelf as a handy reference book.

I'll cut to the chase: I purchased three different books about outdoor survival; this is the one that I'll be carrying in my personal backpack to help me get out of any bad situations that I encounter.Words are pretty much limited to instructions, and there is an illustrative picture for every scenario; just what I want if, God forbid, I'm thrust into a survival situation.Not 5 stars because the illustrations are not in color and because its thicker and heavier than one would want to carry on an ultra-light hike. But it covers SO MANY scenarios that a lighter book would have required a sacrifice of content. At least the book is compact and printed on quality stock that won't fall apart the first time the book gets rained on.A very good value that serves its purpose well.

I ordered this book in hopes that it would be well worth it, I received it and couldn't put it down. The author has created a solid survival book that gives information in a way that is easy to understand and directions that are easy to follow. Some of the information is common sense when it comes to letting people know where you are going when going into the wilderness. I learned a lot of information on building shelters that I didn't know before I picked up the book, it also explains a lot about proper kits and what to have on hand when going hiking.I couldn't put this down, and will surely place it in my pack along with some other helpful books and gear. If you are a prepper or want to learn more about wilderness survival I suggest picking up this book. You will not regret it.

Great book, full of great information .

This book is a perfect reveiw for those that have already had the training and are getting rusty through lack of use like retirement. As to being a practical how to book of survival the best this will do is steer you towards other books that have more in depth training. An example would be The Trapper's Bible which can take you from novice to self reliant with traps, snares, and pathguards. If your only goal is to find out what type of training you would receive in Special Forces Survival schools this book is a good reference guide, not a definitive training manual. In short you can't read this and train yourself to become a survivalist. If you have already mastered the art of fire with a hand drill, half a page of instruction and one still picture of a spun stick can jog your memories of just how many hours it took to actually become a practical fire starter. Military training courses like Artic Survival Training (AST) Jungle Environment Survival Training (JEST) take many weeks and are only the starting point for things covered by half a page of text and a diagram within this book. It would be far more productive to purchase the old military playing cards specific to your intended areas of travel than to try and survive with the limited edible non-edible plant and insect guide paragraphs contained within this book. This book is most properly titled: Special Forces Survival Guide. Without the coresponding survival training schools I can't really say it is of much use. To those that already have the proper training this is a great (sailor's lexicon) gouge book.

This is a great reference book. It is not something I could sit down and read like a traditional book; probably better suited to be packed in your camping gear or referenced prior to going camping. It also could be very useful in the event of a hostile zombie takeover.

The survival techniques are very good! MY Favorite survival good to book! Very satisfied!

I received the Special Forces Survival Guide and, for the most part, was satisfied with the contents therein. That for which I didn't care was the "drawings" of edible plants. Just a slight variation could be the difference between life and death should one trust the illustration and forego the testing of plants. One other miss was what do to when a tick has attached itself to you. The book states it wou8ld be covered in the first aid chapter but, so far, it's eluded me. All in all, it's a great book for those of us who trek into nature. I would suggest that those of you who want to discover and eat wild plants to invest in a book that uses photographs rather than illustrations.

This book is filled with great advise for camping and hiking. It tells what you should have and do if you get lost in all types of terrians. The only thing I wish was better is that the pictures would be better.
