I love this book, I only wish it had more routes to ponder over. I like this book better then most others because it comes with a good preview map for all the routes it lists.

Strengths: trip descriptions and maps are very useful. If this is all you are looking for in a guidebook, buy this book and you're done.Weaknesses:Doesn't provide enough information on obtaining permits, etc, which is essential given the regulated nature of this area. All of the practical "how to" advice is entirely focused on canoes. Kayaks do not exist as far as this book is concerned. This probably reflects the author's generational bias, but is no longer reflctive of modern options. Though I personally was not seeking advice on equipment, given that this book does intend to dole out advice useful to the novice, it's time to look beyond canoes. In this same regard, the descriptions of appropriate clothing choices is decidedly 1950's.

From the Inside Flap

Lao-tzu's "Te-Tao Ching" has been treasured for thousands of years for its poetic statement of life's most profound and elusive truths. This new translation, based on the 1973 discovery of two copies of the manuscript more than five centuries older than any others known, corrects many defects of the later versions. In his extensive commentary, Professor Henricks reevaluates traditional interpretations.

This philosophical classic is one of the most important books ever compiled. Comparing more than 30 translations of it line by line, character by character, I almost invariably settle upon Henrick's translation as the authoritative one. Usually by a very wide margin. Respectful, insightful and disciplined, you will not find a translation that more fairly serves the great classic and its fragile message.

Great additional perspective on a work I already love. The evolutions of the text discussed here are very informative, and the commentary is readable and clear. Great edition for anyone with a deep interest and curiosity about the work.

The reviewer Mr. Forrest couldn't understand why the translator changed the name of the text or re-ordered the two parts. If he had read the book he would know that Ma-Wang-Tui texts had this ordering in the original. He would also know that since the two parts are known as the "Tao" and the "Te" ("the way" and "the virtue"), the naming of the book is perfectly appropriate. Mr. Henricks divides his book into two parts also. The first is a straight-forward translation. The second contains the translation as well as comments, notes and original Chinese from the two Ma-Wang-Tui texts used. If you're not interested in chinese philosophy and history, this probably won't appeal to you. You can always get one of the new age, tao-of-pooh type versions.

I originally became aquainted with this book in the 90's, it is not a hard or laborious read, this has to be one of the greatest peices of literature in existence, not neccesarly this edition, but this book itself, this edition is good as well, was the first edition of this book I read, which is why I wanted this edition again.all study and worship of truth is the same.

This is flat out the very best translation of Lao Tzu that I have ever read. The translations are more clear, more precice than anything else I've seen. Forget fancy pictures. The words speak volumes for themselves. If you only get 1 copy of Lao Tzu, make it the ROBERT HENRICKS translation. You will not be disappointed.

An excellent edition of the most recent discovery of an older version of Tao Te Ching, ideal for all interested in Taoism and technical issues of translation.

A bit complex way of relating to a simple subject, but, still (especially since I do not read chinese) having another point of view on the Tao Te Jing is great. I enjoyed it and learned a lot.

Very interesting book

This collection is a MUST-HAVE for collectors and readers of Carl Barks' great "Uncle Scrooge" stories and one-pagers.It contains the title story, about a fabulously valuable jewelled crown, and a one-dollar watch, complicated by a mysterious and potentially menacing abominable snow man (NOT, as Donald Duck says, "an abdominal snowman").This is swiftly followed by another classic story, "The Land Beneath the Ground" that smacks of the legend of the Hollow Earth, or Jules Verne's "Journey to the Centre of the Earth", but revealing, within vast subterranean caverns that span the whole of the Earth, the Terries, who wear bow ties, and the Fermies who wear four-in-hand neck-scarves. They are the REAL explanation of earthquakes, and an appalling menace to Scrooge's money bin, with its "five billion quintuplatillion umptaplatillion multuplatillion impossibidillion fantasticatrillion dollars".It also includes one of Bark's greatest epics, "The Second-Richest Duck', in which Scrooge, and his "three cubic acres of money, uncountable oil wells, gold mines, railroads, factories, and fish houses (!)", confront his greatest, and most unscrupulous rival, Flintheart Glomgold.Simple book-work quickly establishes that each incredible miser owns exactly the same amount of cash and property. So the ultimate question -- WHO is the first-richest duck? -- will be decided by testing who owns the largest ball of randomly accumulated string.Naturally, the only effective way of deciding whose ball of string is biggest is by unrolling the two balls of string across the centre of savage Africa! It is hilarious! In fact, each of these great stories is very funny, almost frame by frame, and also very wry in the final moments! (Scrooge is a miser, but he is not a totally heartless person. Similarly, Donald Duck, his nephew, is often hopelessly inefficient and scatterbrained, on his own, but as a travel companion for Scrooge, along with his own plucky and almost infinitely resourceful juvenile nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louey, Donald is a very worthy foil for Scrooge at his worst.)And there is more.In "Back to Long Ago", Scrooge, under hypnosis (WHY he agrees to being hypnotised is a funny short story in itself) recalls a fabulous lost treasure, and, yet again, the game is afoot! In "A Cold Bargain', Scrooge finds himself in a Cold War arms-contest with the evil forces of Brutopia, each trying to control the world's scarce resources of a mysterious substance called Bombastium. The second last story is yet another of Barks' absolute best, "Land of the Pygmy Indians".The story begins with Scrooge wanting to flee to a pristine wilderness to escape the smog and noxious fumes of his own Duckburg industries.Naturally he buys a remote North American region with no roads, cities, factories or people, the "Thousand Lakes".This quickly turns into a hilarious encounter with a mysterious local tribe who speak in the verse style of Longfellow's "Hiawatha".Along the way, Scrooge discovers unbelievable mineral wealth in the lands around the Thousand Lakes.Just when Scrooge thinks he has beaten and outwitted the natives, they turn the tables on him, using a pinch of oxide of strombolium. The final full-length story "Fantastic River Race" is a framed story that tells an earlier adventure of Scrooge, in younger days, with his Mississippi sternwheeler paddleboat, first racing against, and then trying to outwit, another stern-wheeler crewed by ancestors of Scrooge's nemesis-villains, the dreaded Beagle Boys, while Scrooge has eccentric assistance from his engineer, Ratchet Gearloose, the grandfather of the famous inventor, Gyro Gearloose, a contemporary of Donald Duck.SEVEN full-length CLASSIC adventures!A Carl Barks "Uncle Scrooge" collection doesn't come much better than this!Very highly recommended!John Gough -- Deakin University (retired) -- jagough49@gmail.com

This might very well be the best collection of Carl Barks work that we've seen so far. At this point I don't think it's really necessary to go into things like the binding, artwork, and the cover. It's all of the same high quality as the previous volumes. What separates this volume from the rest is the stories that are contained within. Simply put, I don't think any of the other volumes give you as many of Barks classic longer stories as this one does. Along with those longer stories comes what I believe to be more smaller, one page stories than any of the previous volumes, but the longer stories more than make up for it. Ignoring the one pagers, altogether you have:The Lost Crown of Genghis Khan- the titular story that features Scrooge and his family searching for an ancient crownLand Beneath the Ground- Scrooge and his family take a journey deep into the EarthThe Second Richest Duck- the first appearance of Flintheart GlomgoldBack to Long Ago!- Scrooge and Donald discover an ancient treasure they buried in a past lifeCold Bargain- Scrooge purchased a rare element and fights to keep it out of thieving handsLand of the Pygmy Indians- Scrooge travels into the wild to get away from pollution, finding himself meeting a tribe of small Native AmericansFantastic River Race- Scrooge recalls his days as the Master of the MississippiThat's a total of 7 longer stories that you can really sink your teeth into, whereas previous volumes might only give you 3-4 of such stories, while also balancing it out with plenty of shorter 10 page stories as well. Personally, while I enjoy almost all of Barks work, his longer stories are my favorites, since they give me more time to really fall into the tale that's being told. So, this volume was a nice surprise for me and almost all of the longer works is a classic in my opinion.

Absolutely perfect! Some claim Barks' peak period is 1948-1952. I disagree. The great master maintained high-level output throughout the entire 1950's, imo. I believe this wonderful book is ample proof of that. And the next Uncle Scrooge tome will feature "Golden River", "The Money Well" and other gems from this period. Don't miss it!

I am a big fan of Carl Barks, Walt Disney, and Uncle Scrooge. Carl Barks was one of the main illustrators while Walt Disney was still alive. These stories were originally in Comic Book form. Each book contains different stories. I am collecting all of them. To have them in hardback is a treasure.

The best comic book guy ever!

It's Disney, Carl barks works.... what more can you say? Takes me back to my childhood !!

my kids love all of them!

As all Carl Barks' books, it's excellent. My favourite adventure, is the one with the pygmies.

As an author, I guess I have to give it five stars... but then I truly think this is a great book, which you will enjoy for the beautiful photography, and find indispensable if planning a dive trip to Mozambique. While there are other guides to the dive sites, and plenty of travel guides for the region, no other book focusses on the dive resorts and operators, or provides specific info for divers by divers.

I have no idea if the book is good enough I was only at the index when there was a pop-up page that I could not get out of that asked me to review the book. So five stars might be wrong who knows?

In this provocative retelling of Genesis, modern values such as freedom, independence, and equality are juxtaposed with a definitively Old Testament God--petulant, controlling, jealous, and easily angered. God wants his creations to do as he says and is disturbed to find that they have minds of their own, minds more complex than he ever envisioned. He created human beings to amuse and worship him, not to go around questioning him.The story is told from the first-person perspective of Eve, who is a curious, artistic, and brave. She can't understand why God made her physically weaker than Adam and wants to run with the gazelles as he does. The serpent is recast as Eve's mentor, a wise being as ancient as God who recognizes the necessity for Adam and Eve to learn their own lessons and to think for themselves. He does not trick them into eating the apple but lets them know exactly what they will be gaining (freedom) and what they will be giving up (ease and safety). The book is written in simple but poetic prose that is easily gobbled up. I finished all 400 pages in a day. Despite the fact that I already knew the ending, I still wanted to keep reading. Eve is a well-realized and sympathetic character, particularly for young girls. Adam is not so well-developed, but this is really Eve's story. Furthermore, The Garden questions pertinent issues such as death, the soul, justice, free will, obedience, science vs. religion, and whether God is omnipotent. Some of the most interesting parts of the book concern Eve and the serpent's philosophical discussions. To many critics, this book is unsatisfactory merely because it calls into question the established religious dogma. To me, this kind of questioning is a good thing. I don't think Aidinoff is trying to start a new religion here, but merely to ask...what if?

Most lovely retelling of the Adam and Eve story as related by Eve. You'll have trouble relating to the serpent in the old way.

I read this in highschool for my women’s literature class and that was 10 years ago and I still think about this book often! Wonderfully written and not what you’d expect when thinking about Adam and Eve!

Everything about this book is compelling. I loved the perspective of Eve, the unique take on the Serpent, and how the author portrays old testament God. I can see how some religious sticklers may not appreciate it, but I enjoyed the storytelling. The relationship between Eve and the Serpent was beautiful and I have read this book several times just because it's such a good story.

I loved this book. It gave a whole new perspective to the world's oldest story. The story was very engaging and thought provoking, and the text was so descriptive. I was able to picture everything the characters were experiencing quite vividly. The most fascinating aspect was my new perception of the serpent. This book allows the reader to really accept a new view of a story we have heard for years.

One of my favourites. Very controversial.

I use to own this book! It got mixed up with donated books last summer, I have been searching for itever since. It was just a cheap book I picked up in a bin on sale, I read it. It is very unusal, and mostinteresting, I intended to add it to my collection. However this particular copy is written on terrible paper, and the cover, well It just isnt like the one I hadand it cost me more than the first! If you are interested in reading this and dont care what its written onthen I suggest you go right ahead and buy..

I found it to have a very childish perspective on God and the garden in general.

War and Peace (Oxford World's Classics Hardback Collection)

Review

"Oxford University Press recently added three of the most acclaimed czarist era novels to its Classics Hardback Collection: Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina and War and Peace and Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. Each is a new translation prefaced lucidly by an acclaimed scholar in the field. Both Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, though in increasingly different yet overlapping ways, stirred profound debates on pressing philosophical and spiritual questions, essentially, how to live, especially in a world of accelerating change." - The Shepherd Express

I have, at various times, tried to read four different editions of War & Peace (Penguin, Signet, Barnes & Noble, and now this) and by far, this is the best edition I've seen. This edition is everything I was looking for in a copy of War & Peace and I cannot recommend it highly enough.Pros:It is highly readable. Translating texts is always difficult, because you want to retain the feel of reading a Nineteenth century work but use language that makes the work accessible. Personally, I found some editions (Barnes & Noble, Penguin) to be hard to read and comprehend, especially when you first begin. This edition is a relative breeze to read.It has French translations. When reading the Signet edition, I found myself using google translate to understand sentences or phrases left in the book in French. Other editions translated most of the French but left phrases here and there untranslated and in the text, without footnotes. I understand in the original, Tolstoy wrote entire passages in French but provided translations in the foot notes. This edition follows that pattern. There are entire passages in French, but they are translated in the footnotes on the page.It has historical end-notes and an index. I am not unfamiliar with European and Russian history, but I, like most people, have no more knowledge than what I learned in my freshman world history class. This work has end notes in the text to provide context. Though it slows me down, I find myself flipping to the back of the book and reading every end note when the text provides it. I cannot stress enough how helpful this has been. The index is likewise helpful. It is an alphabetical list and short biography of the historical characters and places mentioned in War and Peace. It includes a short chapter summary. At the very end of the book, there is a chapter summary for a collection of chapters sharing a theme or describing the same event. The summary is no more than a sentence long and provides a nice refresher when you are trying to recall what happened when.Cons:Compared to editions that translate all the French, reading in the footnotes can be burdensome. I personally don't mind, but I can see how that might trip some people up.If you are looking for a copy of War and Peace, this is the one to get. Trust me.

It is unlikely that anyone who has the endurance to finish this book would give it a poor review. That would still be true, however, if it were one-third the length. It is, if not the best novel ever written, certainly on a very short list of great works of literature. The beauty of the prose, for me, is the fact that Tolstoy speaks through subtlety. His powers of description are beyond comparison, and in fact there is relatively little dialogue given the length of the book. But the focus of his descriptive powers is not the scenery or the landscape, as is often the case, but the gesture, the look on the face, the social context of the event. This is a subtlety that is lost in our dialogue-heavy, action-packed world today, and is almost foreign to most contemporary authors.Which, in part, also explains why War and Peace seems inapproachable to many contemporary readers. Many of us have lost touch with subtlety and if you are one of those, reading this book would be the greatest gift you can give yourself in the months ahead.“Helene was so good-looking that there was not only not a trace of coquetry to be seen in her, but, on the contrary, it was as if she was embarrassed by her unquestionable and all too strongly and triumphantly effective beauty. It was as if she wished but was unable to diminish the effect of her beauty.” When was the last time you read such a descriptive passage that used so few descriptive adjectives? One of the common criticisms of the book is that the characters often speak in French, which is retained in this translation. This is more true in the beginning, however, and, in total, the French represents a small portion of the total prose. And translation is provided, although the electronic version requires a certain amount of digital (as in fingers) dexterity that I don’t seem to have.Tolstoy, however, is sensitive to the inconvenience and I can’t recall a single passage in which the French was central to either the theme or the storyline. It is mostly there for context, so even if you pass over the short phrases you will miss little other than the full experience that Tolstoy intended. Also remember that French and English are not all that foreign to each other and the most important words in French can be easily guessed by English readers with a little lingual abandonment.Similarly, the complexity of Russian naming conventions need not be the burden it often is to the English reader. Tolstoy most definitely wrote a novel, not a mystery thriller, although he claims that it is not a novel. The storyline is not the book; it serves the theme. That, along with the rich context provided by Tolstoy’s prose, means that you don’t have to recognize each name before you complete the sentence. Nine times out of ten the identity will become obvious before the scene ends. And for that exception there is a handy reference guide. My advice: when you encounter a name that you don’t immediately recognize, read on for a bit before you look it up.As a thematic novel, it is not Tolstoy’s intent to document the Napoleonic wars, although that is the rough timeline of the book. He uses the history more to reveal the cultural themes he seeks to reveal—the culture of the Russian aristocracy at the time. While that culture contrasts sharply with the way in which most Americans are inclined to think of Russia, the themes are quite timeless. There are many passages which could as easily be describing today’s aristocracy—the wealthy elite. As Yogi Berra reminded us, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”Tolstoy is particularly philosophical about war. When I asked a friend of mine who was a Marine veteran who served in the jungles of Vietnam what he thought about the movie, “Saving Private Ryan”, he noted that no one has ever been able to capture the sheer chaos of war on film. Tolstoy, however, does capture it in prose and it is moving without being graphic or overly detailed. You nonetheless feel that you are immersed in the same situational context as the young infantryman thrown about in the chaos of futility and death. In the end, this book easily earns its reputation as one of the best novels ever written. Through his grasp of subtlety and his incomparable ability to build intangible impressions with tangible prose, Tolstoy takes us through the full range of human emotions, accomplishment, and vacuity.Unlike most contemporary authors, Tolstoy actually “tells” us little. As many great novels do, he merely puts themes out there for us to consider and mold to our own experience and our own lives. You will be surprised at how much of yourself you find in early 19th Century Russian characters and events. If not timeless, the insight and the human revelation are universal. As Tolstoy himself wrote, “We can know only that we know nothing. And that is the highest degree of human wisdom.”Indeed!

The two stars are not about the book but Amazon's mislabeling of the translation. This Kindle edition is now the Anthony Briggs, not the Rosemary Edmonds translation. I have the paperback version of the Anthony Briggs translation and it matches up perfectly with this kindle edition. I really wish Amazon would do a better job of labeling who translates their Kindle editions, different translations can make all the difference in your enjoyment of the book.

Worth’s Income Tax Guide For Ministers: 2012 Edition was written by Beverly J. Worth in 2011. Mrs. Worth is a graduate of Calvary Bible College and is the founder and owner of Worth Financial Service. She is an Enrolled Agent and Certified Tax Practitioner; she first authored this publication 1973 and has revised it every year since then. From pave v. in the forward, Mrs. Worth’s declared goals are, “…to teach ministers how to keep their taxes to a minimum and to maximize their earning power.” There are several testimonials on the back cover as well as on page 136 from ministers, lawyers and tax practitioners; as well as people who have attended one or more of Mrs. Worth’s seminars; who all declare that she is a recognized authority on taxes and that she greatly helped them with her seminars and tax publications. As an income tax guide, Mrs. Worth organized the book similar to a manual and many of the 144 pages show the reader what the tax forms look like. The author puts these facsimiles of the forms to good use, explaining to the reader how to properly complete these IRS forms. This is a very helpful tool. The numerous references to the various tax codes and tax laws are very helpful as well. Mrs. Worth states in the forward that the purpose for adding these references was to give the reader confidence and this goal is achieved satisfactorily. Another strength of Worth’s Income Tax Guide for Minister’s is that it is laid out in a fashion that attracts the reader’s (presumably those involved in vocational ministry) attention. The very first chapter involves fringe benefits, certainly something even the most pious Christian would be curious about. The author then explains housing allowances in chapter two, and professional expenses in chapter three. All of these areas are difficult to understand, and Mrs. Worth does a remarkable job explaining why minister’s must do taxes different and how the government taxes ministers differently, but explains it in a way that is non-threatening and easy to understand, emphasizing the benefits as opposed to any disadvantages. In chapter four the author tackles the mystery of social security for religious workers. In this chapter she diligently explains the computation of social security base, as well as social security exemption and the “new belief” opportunity. Another section of this chapter that is especially helpful to ministers is the part on retirement planning. Mrs. Worth aptly explains mutual funds, annuities and helpfully summarizes the differences between unqualified and qualified investment options. She is neutral in her explanation of the investment options; simply explain what they mean and how much a minister may contribute to the different plans. Chapter five explains tax laws for missionaries serving overseas. This is a very short chapter and would not be applicable to a reader serving stateside. However, for a missionary or minister serving abroad for any reason, this chapter would be invaluable. The author explains social security and binational agreements as well as giving a detailed summary of the rules regarding physical residence and bona fide residency. The author includes a helpful discussion of form 2555 and form 2555-EZ and suggests that the reader study IRS publication 54, as it contains more in-depth information for overseas missionaries. Chapters six and seven cover completed payroll reports and completed income tax returns. The majority of chapter seven is comprised of sample income tax returns, which is very helpful to reader, who may use these samples as a guide when filling out their respective returns. Every type of return that a minister may file is listed and these visual aids are very helpful. The careful reader will gain a great understanding of tax laws and policies for ministers after a careful study of this book. The most significant feature of Worth’s tax guide is the comprehensive interaction with tax codes and laws as they pertain to the vocational minister. The support from the quotations of applicable tax laws and the repeated references to the IRS manuals and forms were a great asset to the book. This demonstrates that the author knew what she was talking about and the careful reader could look up the references directly on the Internal Revenue Service website, where IRS publications are made available. Another significant feature is the positive attitude the author has towards the IRS, and she stresses and attitude of cooperation on page 97. It is easy to look at the government in general and the IRS in particular with an attitude of mistrust and antagonism. The positive light Mrs. Worth sheds on the revenue branch of the U.S. government was refreshing. This reader will recommend this book to any minister who has questions about taxes and retirement for those in vocational ministry. It will also be recommended to those who have questions as far as investing for retirement and who are uncertain about the different investment options related to ministers retirement. The book is a wide-ranging survey of how taxes work for those in ministry and is valuable to anyone who would like a better understanding of this subject.

I have used B.J. Worth's tax guide ever since it was a small 1/2 page booklet and now has grown into a major volume. I have run into "expert" tax service companies who know nothing about clergy and minister's taxes and this book gives them a full education on the special situations of clergy as well as the extra deductions available. The book is worth every penny you pay for it as you will find all the forms and advice you need to save yourself headaches and avoiding taxes that other tax preparers do not know about. B.J. Worth has been THE leader in clergy taxes and there is not a tax guide on the market that can compare to her publication and the services her company provides over the telephone (although rumor has it now that she has retired and sold her company to another group that does not provide the phone consultations...that would be a huge loss). But, the book can help any group set up their books, run their quickbooks with ease for clergy and avoid any questions. A MUST BUY for any minister.

Great resource for the unique needs of ministers. Got this to make sure we're current and utilizing the IRS provided tax benefits. I've on occasion had to call Worth before to ask specifics and they were very helpful, often not charging me to answer my questions.

B.J. Worth and her organization have again produced the standard in the area of clergy taxes. Her knowledge and insight as well as the tools, charts, forms, and IRS rulings that are included will help any minister or person serving in ministry to cut their taxes. I recently loaned one pastor my 2007 version and he went back over what he had been told to file with the IRS using a normal tax company here in town. He discovered that he overpayed the IRS by $6,000 as a clergyman. Is a $17.00 book worth it? Well, I all I can say is that I have purchased an annual copy of Worth's Tax Guide for over 20 years and it has saved me hundreds of dollars and has helped me set up perfect tax records for our family.

This is the most comprehensive tax guide for ministers and their churches. It is to be trusted above professional CPAs. I have taught my tax preparers things they didn't know about minister's tax codes because I read this. It gives lots of examples for filing correctly.

I ordered this Worth’s Income Guide For Clergy based on the recommendation of another pastor. It was a great tool to help me get get my book work in order and to understand the tax system. I am pretty good at running a church and a non-profit but I’ve always been an employee so I needed a tool to help me organize and this was a great help.

One of the best resources for understanding the tax codes and changes for clergy. Very concise and easy to understand! Highly recommend it. We buy it yearly!

This book is an easy to understand and a valuable resource for clergy and church treasurers. Many church financial officers are volunteers who really do not understand the clergy tax laws. I like the way the IRS reference information is given with each section, rather than at the back of the book. It is worth the price to keep an updated copy in your library if you are a minister, church treasurer or anyone who prepares clergy tax.
