Before getting this book I had already created a moderately successful mod (Doomlike Dungeons) for Minecraft 1.5.2 and updated it to versions 1.6, 1.7, and 1.8 of the game, as well as a couple smaller mod (one of which is silly and will never be released, the other is hidden in my Adventrues of the Ancients modpack to round things out and tie them together). I find this book well written and complete for the topics it covers (I do wish I had a section on dimension modding). For someone new to modding this should teach them all the basics. The description of Java concepts is a bit awkward and simplistic, but for Minecraft and Forge related material is quite good. It would have been nice to have had this when I first started learning to mod.Now, for a complaint I've see: this is for 1.7.10, not the latest 1.8 version of the game. Well, any book you get will likely be behind when or soon after its release -- new updates keep coming out, and probably will as long as people keep buying the game. The good news is this: Once you know how to do something with one version you have a good starting place for figuring out other versions, even if the new (or older) way is a little different.On another key point is Java language and programming in general. You actually can create simple mods without really knowing Java by just following instructions by rote. But, learning Java will pay off greatly -- when you understand Java many things that might seem arbitrary start to make sense. Knowing Java also lets you begin reading the Minecraft soruce code itself and going beyond what others tell you in books, videos, or other sources. An understanding of Java will give you far more freedom and power, allowing more creativity in your mods. Therefore I would recommend a book like Teach Yourself Java in 21 days (or 24 hours) for those with know programming experience and younger readers. The freely available Java tutorials from Oracle are also very good if you have some programming experience. If you really want to fully unleash you creativity the book Game Programming Patterns and a beginning book on algorithms and data structures and/or game programming will take you to the next level. Without and understanding of data structures and algorithms Doomlike Dungeons would not exist.All around I would recommend this book to anyone starting out modding Minecraft, but again, not without a beginning Java book unless you are already a Java programmer (fortunately I was).

Would give it five stars if they supported Minecraft 1.9 on their support site. My son loved it until the point on how to modifying a food item which errors out since the book and their website only supports Minecraft 1.8 and my son is using version 1.9. Since the book was less than a year from being published I assumed incorrectly it was current and also since it provided access to online code updates I assumed the author would keep the code base current but that is not the case.If not supporting newer minecraft versions it would have been nice to have a page or 2 explaining when the parameter list of a function changes how to look up the updated function call to know what to put in the parameter list.

Sam's teach yourself covers every aspect needed to creatr a fully functional mine craft mod. I came in with no experience except some basic java and by the time I had finished the book I felt comfortable with all the aspects covered. The examples are well explained and the pace suits all levels of Java experience.highly recommended!!!

The book is really helpful in learning how to mod Minecraft 1.7.10. I have been adding 5 items into my mod within an hour. It's really good at explaining how to do things and makes a legitimate attempt at trying to explain Java coding. How ever though, I think it would be a good idea to watch some tutorials online Java tutorials as we'll maybe as you read the book. It's not the author's fault, it's more the subject matter. Anyway though, it's a lot more fun (and easy) than trying to learn by yourself.

Exactly what I was looking for, it covered how to use Forge to make basic mod changes, and provided a reference for conventions used. It pays to at least have a comp sci 1 background in Java though.

My kids were constantly asking me to download Minecraft mods. When one of their computers became infected I put a stop to the mods. One day while my son was begging me for a mod he had found I challenged him to build his own. I found this book and purchased it and we have been working through it together. My son is 9 and I have very little programming experience but we have had fun going through the exercises together. We are only on the third chapter but we have already learned so much and can't wait to learn more.

Extremely well laid out, this iconic book is valuable to get a birds-eye view about the Children's Book market and personal remarks from some of its known publishers and agents. (I really enjoyed these "Q&A" interviews with editors, author suggestions and other 'side-bars'.) Still, this book is what I would call a 'scaffolding tool'. I mean, you have to read this book with an attentive spirit, take a lot of the information seriously, but then RESEARCH more. AND do not take all items stated as 'Bible'. As a reference book, it's already aging!For example, there is a superb section "Book Publishers". Most publishers are listed. With each listing is the address & webpage, acquisition team info' (editors, etc.), the type of books they publish, how to contact them and other information. However, a writer intended to be published, must go to each website, cross reference and update the information you find.I bought this book in 8/2009 (mind you this IS a 2010 reference) and in my own efforts, looking at each publisher's web site, I found enough info' in the "Book Publishers" section to be 'incorrect'. Of course this makes sense...the book was likely written and finalized at the beginning of this year!Keep in mind, the market is fluid, editors change jobs, companies are tightening their acquisition preferences and some have very, very clear specifics relative to how and what to submit and most importantly, even if you should submit a manuscript(Seriously, some even tell you their preferred envelope type. FOLLOW their directions to a 't').Do you homework! Good luck!

You will still need to go online and research each listings for new Editors, Agents, and Submission Guidelines because in the publishing business there are always updates and changes. This book also list good advise for new writers and illustrators as well as interesting industry pointers and websites. Look for a newer version for more updated facts.

This book didn't give me the information I was looking for. I am an Illustrator and currently work with local Authors. I know the market is constantly changing. I would go online and research before sending out any artwork. The information given at least gives you somewhere to start. My advice would be "Get an Agent"The seller was awesome though, the book came in to me in great shape and even though I'm a bit late on the review, I would buy again from them!

Not sure about the word count? if they send your dummy book back? what publishers are looking for? does a publisher accept multiple submissions? how many 1st-time authors a publisher accepts each year? Almost EVERY question you need to know can be found in here. This book also includes some great tips and articles for aspiring writers to read. You need this book. Informative and extremely helpful!

Let's face it...this is four years old now, and if there's a 2014 edition of CW&I Market, I stand amazed...so much is now online.However, the benefit of the hard copy is that you can take a highlighter pen to it and mark the markets you might want to revisit. Maybe I'm waxing nostalgic for that approach, but it had it's merits.All that said, this is solid product that is also probably antiquated at this point.

Many of the entries list publishers as no longer accepting unsolicited manuscripts. I really did not find this book to be helpful or worthwhile. On the contrary, it left me with the feeling that children's publishing is an exercise in futility. If you want to get published, write a book about how to get published.

Very happy with this book and the price couldn't be beat! The information inside is very help as well and love the layout of this new version! I have a previous version as well and both are very help, not repetitive like I thought it might be. Good buy for someone looking to get into or that is already into writing! You really MUST buy this book!

This is a big book with information that is good and useful, but I also have found there are other books that would be more helpful in what I was trying to learn. I wasn't familiar with some of the terms used and it made it hard to understand some parts. I needed more examples, especially when it came to picture book writing. It may be better for someone writing chapter books or young adult books.

Excellent program for high schoolers 10th and up. Or 8-9th graders in serious relationships.

Very good. A little tough for teens to read, but certainly a good book, and certainly timely. Books like this are sorely needed.

I order this for my daughter for school. The book arrived On time and the item was just as described on the site.

This is an excellent overview of the teaching of Pope John Paul II on the subject of the morality of teenage sexuality. This provides a solid foundation to establish the clear and concise teachings of the Catholic Church with regards to spirituality, virginity, abstinence, chastity, birth control, divorce, etc. The layout of the chapters is teen-friendly with a deep respect for human dignity. I have had tremendous results with the course thus far. My only regret is that as a teacher and as a parent that this course wasn't available sooner.

As a parent I want the best for my children. I believe that this book presents the truth in such a way that it engages you and lifts you up. It will help your teenager to understand the truth about their sexuality and hopefully to make the best decisions for their lives and the lives of their friends. It is right where the teenagers are and doesn't hold anything back. Get it and read it, and then give it to your teenager.

Theology of the Body for Teens is an awesome look at the Catholic Church's teachings on faith and sexuality which is taught in a way geared for the avareage 9th-12th grader to understand. It includes many discussion points and movie references from nearly every genre, but the heart of the program (yes, there are also DVDs, leader materials, and a parent's guide) leads the teens on a journey of self-discovery both in their faith and sexuality. It does discuss such topics as homosexuality and pornography, but not in a shameful way.I used this (as dis the 39 other parishes in my Diocese) as the first year in our two-year Confirmation sacramental preparation.I highly recommend that you learn more about the program and consider using it.
