The King Of Ireland's Son, by Brendan Behan

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6. A lively folktale containing all of the elements that please children. Originally published in Brendan Behan's Island-An Irish Sketchbook (Random, 1962; o.p.), the text was transcribed from a tape recording of Behan telling the story, adding to the immediacy of the narrative. The King of Ireland wishes to know the source of the heavenly music that can be heard all around the country, so he sends his three sons off on the quest. When the brothers notice the music coming from a hole in the ground, Neart and Ceart lower Art down, hoping to get rid of him. Art travels through a tunnel and meets three old men, each the father of the one before, and finally comes upon a talking horse who leads him to a palace garden, where he discovers a captive princess playing a harp. Art must trick her captor, a giant, and keep himself from being devoured in the process. With the help of the magical stallion and his own quick wits and good humor, he rescues the princess and returns triumphantly to his father's castle, where he inherits half of the kingdom, marries the princess, "and wasn't I at the wedding as well as everybody else...." The exuberance of Lynch's vigorous watercolors, from lush gardens to humorous facial expressions, perfectly matches the rollicking rhythm of the text to create a wholly satisfying read-aloud. A perfect choice for St. Patrick's Day or any folklore unit.?Connie C. Rockman, formerly at Ferguson Library, Stamford, CTCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Gr. 3^-5, younger for reading aloud. In this folktale from Brendan Behan's Island--An Irish Sketchbook, the king's three sons set off to find the source of the "heavenly music" heard throughout the country. Steered by three generations of old men through a long tunnel, advised to mount a stallion at the other end, and warned about a ferocious giant, youngest son Art discovers the beautiful harpist-singer. To break the spell that imprisons her, Art must defeat a giant in a deadly hide-and-seek game. Behan's rich retelling, also found in Jane Yolen's Favorite Folktales from around the World (1986), begs to be read aloud. Greenaway medalist Lynch's handsome paintings are reminiscent of such early illustrators as Rackham. Full of drama, emotion and magic, they make this story more accessible to children. Linda Perkins

What a great book love the illustrations

This was a good story. I thought it would be about three heroes and not just one. The way the hero outsmarted the giant was a little weird, but it was still a good story.

"The King of Ireland's Son" is an original fairytale by Brendan Behan, but so immersed in the traditions and familiarities of Irish folk-lore that is could well be taken for a true tale from that huge mythological canon. Behan narrates in a jaunty-like prose that reminds one immensely of the language usually connected to stories from Ireland, and incorporates many of the usual fairytale components: a tricksy giant, a damsel in distress, enigmatic guides upon the road, a helpful talking animal, a threefold trial and a triad of brothers: two malevolent ones to the virtueous youngest. The King of Ireland hears the sound of "heavenly music" in his kingdom, and promises half the land to whichever son manages to find its source. The two eldest, Neart and Ceart, take the oppurtunity to get rid of Art, the youngest, by lowering him down the hole from which the music appears to be coming from. Art however, is sincere in his wish to follow the music, and follows the tunnel connected to the dark hole, ushered on by three elderly men, each one older than the previous, each the son of the following one.Art follows their advice to a beautiful garden, where a beautiful, magical stallion carries him through an equally beautiful garden. There he finds the music's source: the daughter of the King of Greece is held captive there, under the power of a huge and evil giant. Captured by the giant, Art agrees to his challenge: for three days the giant will hide, and if Art does not find him, he'll be killed. If by any change he does succeed, then it's Art's turn to hide whilst the giant seeks. Again, should Art fail, it will end in his death.Helped by the Princess and the stallion Art takes up the challenge, leading to the most rewarding part of the book: the ingenius hiding places held by the two opponents. Here P. J. Lynch's always-stunning illustrations come into play. The bold yet delicate watercolours are a feast for the eye, and Lynch seems to be able to paint *anything*, from any angle, whether it be comical facial expressions, the giant's eye view of the world, or the cavernous tunnel where all the actions takes place. In particular, the expression of the Princess gesturing to her ring is priceless! I couldn't help but laugh at the perfect expression she wears of a person desparately trying to convey secret information without the antagonist realising she's doing so. The giant also is a great creation - menacing without being too terrifying.Like most folklore heroes, Art relys more on the advice on helpful guides than his own devices (the stallion is solely responsible for his salvation) and the Princess, in her own words has: "been here for a year and a day and I can't get away from this old fellow until someone comes to rescue me." Obviously the idea that such damsels could be their own rescuers had not yet reached fruitition, but Lynch's portrayal of her, with sparkling wit and humour makes her not a total loss as a female role model.Despite some narrative faults, "The King of Ireland's Son" is a great addition to the bookshelf, especially for those with a love for folklore and fairytales that are brought to life with thoughtful, creative illustrations.

Some things are great about this book: The Irish cultural references, beautiful artwork, and unique fairy tale elements like the three very old men. Some things are downright hilarious, like references to new-fangled foods, food appearing in the ears of the horse, and the places where the king's son hides (I won't give it away). But this book doesn't pass muster in my house, despite the Waldorf recommendation and the fact that we are homeschooling with a Waldorf curriculum. Here's why: It's very male-centered, and the female protagonist does nothing but sit around and wait to be rescued by a man. Then she marries the man (after being sure, of course, that he is royalty). Also, the hero's brothers needlessly try to get rid of him, without provocation, and end up banished at the end. The sibling hostility and banishment is such a minor and unexplained part of the story that it seems completely random and unnecessary. Why not just have the brothers try to help him in the beginning, and welcome him home at the end? This is the kind of detail I change when I am retelling classic fairy tales.Maybe I would feel differently about this book if I had sons, but in my Pagan Feminist Waldorf Homeschooling house, raising daughters, this book went back to the public library quickly!

My first-grader loves this book, we can't read it enough. My 3-year old sits by, spellbound, and sometimes I find him looking through the pictures on his own. I found this at the library, and we had to renew it so many times I finally bought it. The language is wonderfully rich and strange--best for those who love to read aloud with gusto.

I bought this for my son and was very glad I did. It's an adventure tale of a prince who must defeat a giant. The pictures are lush and beautiful, and it's delightfully written with great descriptions.

This book is well deserving of more than five stars. If I could, I would. There has been a lot of focus in recent years on the Nazi members that escaped to South America, but rarely have I seen much focus on those who came to America. It was interesting to read about these individuals and what happened to them as a result of their actions. This author did not only compile a book of meticulous research and facts, but also was compassionate and yet neutral in his writing. You can tell when reading his words that he feels for those who were affected by the violence and unfairness of the Nazis. I appreciate feeling a connection with the author when reading historical accounts as it makes the reading less dry and impersonal.I also greatly appreciated that the recounting of events from the concentration camps was only briefly covered toward the beginning and thereafter only facts needed to support the book were used. It really does get tiring seeing so many books about this subject that simply spend page after page telling us what we already know.If you have an historical interest in this subject and would like to hear of events that you haven't heard before, this book is the way to go. I have the utmost respect for the writing ability of this author. This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher and provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

I just finished reading this most disturbing, and outstanding, book. As a boy hiding from the Nazis throughout World War II, I dreamed of a country where people were decent and free, and whose sons were fighting to defeat our oppressors. To me, the United States was “the shining city on the hill.” Of course, as an adult, I learned that my adopted country wasn’t perfect. I found out about its history of slavery and racial bigotry, anti-Semitism, imprisonment of Japanese-Americans. But I wasn’t ready for this bombshell: following World War II, the U.S. became a refuge for Nazi war criminals, some of whom were responsible (though perhaps indirectly) for the murders of twenty-five members of my family.I knew about a few high-level Nazis who came to America, such as Wernher von Braun, but I had been under the impression that their numbers were small, and that they were the “better” Nazis. After reading Eric Lichtblau’s excellent book, THE NAZIS NEXT DOOR: HOW AMERICA BECAME A SAFE HAVEN FOR HITLER’S MEN, I find that I was wrong. There were thousands of them–and they weren’t just the “better” ones. Many were murderers: high-level SS officers responsible for carrying out the Holocaust, concentration camp commanders and guards, rocket scientists who worked thousands of slave workers to death. How did this happen? As soon as the war ended, the US government wiped its collective memory clean of German atrocities and turned its attention to its new enemy–the Soviet Union. Almost overnight, anyone who was opposed to Communism was America’s friend. And no one was more anti-Communist than the Nazis. The CIA, the military, and the FBI employed Hitler’s murderers as spies. Other government agencies employed German scientists and engineers. Records of atrocities committed by these new American citizens were whitewashed, and they settled quietly into lives as good neighbors and ordinary folks throughout the country. The author exposes this ugly piece of history based on exhaustive research, examination of documents released only recently, and interviews with a small group of Nazi hunters in our Department of Justice, who worked tirelessly to bring the most notorious of the Nazis to justice and to strip them of their American citizenship. A disturbing–yet excellent–book written by a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer is a must read for everyone interested in contemporary American history: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Hoped to learn more about Operation Paperclip and the whole operation that took the most evil of men and repackaged them for use by the West -- and allowed them to escape justice for their crimes. Not impressed with this writer, though. Got some information on the subject, but the author seems more upset that the West used former Nazis against the Communists than that the West allowed mass-murderers to walk free and develop new lives in our own country.

The idea that some Nazis found a SAFE haven in the United States & later on collected pensions from Germany AND the USA is hard to stomach. In contrast, the widows of the 20th July resistance fighters did not receive any penny from the German government for a LONG time. The actions of the CIA, FBI & the Department of Justice are equally disturbing & murky. Bureaucracy at its worst & "white washing".But in the end the spirit of justice in several individuals prevailed. They unearthed painful facts. Eric Lichtblau is one of them. He is presenting the results to the general public in a fair & balanced way.

The story of Nazis being used after WWII for the Cold War has been told before. However, many still don't know about it, or haven't learned from its lessons. Lichtblau's book focuses mainly on those living among the population as if they had never been part of the Nazi Reich. Others have written on how Nazis used as spies didn't work all that well, Annie Jacobson's recent Operation Paperclip focuses on the rocket scientists (which Lichtblau touches on) and others like The Hitler Legacy show the negative repercussions to this day. It is not hindsight that the government could have done without the Nazis whom had caused a war that killed tens of millions, a war that tens of thousands died fighting. Not all the Germans who came here after the war were Nazis, but many slipped by and many were knowingly allowed to. A cautionary tale best listened to.

Very detailed study of the subject in question. A one-stop shop for all reference needs!

Incredible resource for people who study the Holocaust or who are just interested in it. I can never read enough and the study is a lifelong study....this encyclopedia set is an amazing addition and support to the study....

Volume Two (as was Volume One) is the most indepth study of the Holocaust and its consequences ever written. I look forward to the remaining five volumes. A must have in any serious historian's library of this period.

This book has proven invaluable in research. Was worth every sent.

Too bad this set is out of reach for so many of us, survivors, grandchildren who want and need to piece together the holes in their family history.

I thought this book would be a replacement for the over-priced NFPA 70 National Electric Code. The authors did an excellent job describing, in simple terms, the complexity of the NFPA 70. I did find it confusing when the Handbook referenced tables that were not in the Handbook. I would recommend this book to anyone needing a thorough explanation of NEC Codes and how and why they were derived. If you don't want to buy the NFPA 70, you can view it online at the NFPA site and use the Handbook to reference any code.

It is not what I expected. Lots of reading materials but lacks visual examples

Bought this for a Christmas present. Receiver was well pleased!

Great deal

Review

Of course the big lure ... is Locke's evisceration of Eastwood, with whom she lived for 13 years until they split up in 1989 in spectacularly messy fashion.... Locke is at her best recounting what it's like to live in the bubble of a superstar. -- Entertainment Weekly

I am a bit torn with this book. On one hard I love Sondra Locke. I remember her public break up with Clint Eastwood very well even though I was a young person. I really understood it at the time as a man with power trying to make a woman into a "nothing". It's one of the many things I learned from as a young adult and why I am now a feminist. The book is beautifully written. The language and flow is great and Ms Locke is s clearly multi talented. But I guess the content is more of my issue. The title gives the impression that the book is a tell all about her and Clint. In reality she writes more about her husband and childhood friend Gordon. I also felt like Sondra did not explain why she got into a relationship with a married man and what if any burden that she carried. It was an odd way to be in a relationship for each of them. Clint also has a proven track record of dating a new woman while still committed to another.I came out of the book seeing both sides actually. Sondra promised to take care of Gordon the rest of his life and he really didn't work. That put Gordon directly in the center of their relationship and I can see how that would grow tiresome for Clint. But Clint ABSOLUTELY ruined her career in revenge. For me it was an odd tale where I did not feel as though I completely understood all of these people.

People want dirt then complain that it "outs" the celebrity. I have no problems with any of Ms. Locke's statements. I really enjoyed the anecdotes behind her life and climb to early stardom. The Eastwood stuff is pretty tame, but still...it is interesting to rewatch the movies they've both done and know a little history behind it.

In the interests of full disclosure, I knew Sondra, and she was a bright, lovely, intelligent and talented woman. I have read literally hundreds of Hollywood biographies and memoirs, and this book is one of the best. I loved the first part of the book best. It tells the story of a young girl from Shelbyville, TN who is discovered by Hollywood; gets the role of Mick in "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" and is nominated for an Oscar for her very first role. Fascinating! Later, of course, she meets Clint Eastwood and becomes his personal and professional partner, and Sondra is not unflinching in her description of this period. After the relationship ends, Clint does everything to thwart her personal and professional life. But, in the end, Sondra prevails - one of the few to prevail against Clint. As such, Sondra comes across as a feminist of the first order - something that she is rarely given credit for. This book is a great read, but also a must-read for women who are struggling to succeed in a male-dominated industry and world. Five stars all the way!

Great read. Reveals the extent celebrities had clout to present the image they wanted to present while controlling and wielding power behind the scenes. This story reminded me about what Hitchcock did to Tippi Hedron. Sondra was a beautiful actress and wish she had had a chance to continue doing what she wanted in Hollywood during her prime.

I bought this to get a more indepth understanding into Clint Eastwood. And did I ever. And now he is going thru much the same thing with his last wife. Very informative on all counts.

It was most informative.

Initially when starting this book I would have agreed with the most critical review on here. However, I gave it a go for a few more chapters and found myself sucked in to the story and actually sympathizing with Sondra (something I never thought I would do). There is a lot of insight to Sondra and Clint Eastwood's relationship and how talented she really is. I'm very glad I stuck with it and read the story through. It was a very good read!

Crongratulations for taking the System Down, Twice !! Now that's what I call a Journey to be Proud Of , Higly recomended book, "surround yourself with good people and you'll achieve great things", luckily for Sondra she had a few of those, the counted for all of hollywood and More
