Amidst the larger than life figures of the early twentieth century, there were also individuals influenced by their own path that eventually changed as they progressed and unexpectedly made a difference to the rest of the world. From the pages of history and the life that she lived first, as an intellectual and curious world traveler, second archaeologist, and third officer of foreign affairs, Gertrude Bell deserves a place within the annals of history before the world drastically changed after 1914 and thereafter. Historian Janet Wallach writes an immensely detailed biography of her life Desert Queen: The Extraordinary Life of Gertrude Bell, Adventurer, Adviser to Kings, Ally of Lawrence of Arabia.Wallach examines the life of Bell through a chronological timeline of her much personal life and of woman of her times, living the life of a socialite in Victorian England well taken care of by her father and to fulfill traditional expectations to the liking of her family. However, as one reads this fascinating story, Bell’s experiences will guide her to places and people that she could not ever imagined, she was the first woman to earn a degree in Modern History at Oxford University. And Wallach reveals with much intimate encounters, the short-lived successes and countless pitfalls of her relationships with potential suitors with or without her family’s approval due to particular circumstances extremely explained in the book. There is no denying, Bell was surrounded by the most prominent individuals of power and wealth, Winston Churchill, T. E. Lawrence, Sir Percy Cox, A.T. Wilson, and numerous Kings and Princes. Each experience also had a place within her adventurous journeys away from England to travels abroad, especially to the Middle East that left a long-term effect on her. Through the research that Wallach completed at the Robinson Library of the University of Newcastle, the letters and diaries and other biographies retelling of Bell’s life, and also, the photographs and the maps that are included in the book, Wallach weaves a narrative of revealing proportions. Indeed, she was a unique woman to have spent many hours and days and years with distinguished figures in the Arab world and the work that she contributed within international relations as a representative to British affairs in the Middle East during the most pivotal periods in history during World War I; her story and the history that she shares, reverberates of the effects of the war on the east and the aftermath of independence for the regions in which she traveled and the realignment of geographical and political boundaries that will be set in place. Bell’s accounts of the lens of history of country and people may resonate of what she saw of colonizer to the colonized. Wallach specifically described this as Bell saw that the world changed by 1919 and her ideas did as well within 180 degrees. The book is an amazing tale of a woman who matured with much dexterity within over 20 year period until her death. Gertrude Bell achieved so much in her lifetime beyond expectation of those closest to her, establish relations between Great Britain and the Arab world, a preservationist to antiquities and created the Baghdad Museum and awarded gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society. Aside from the accolades, she was a woman in a man’s world that left an experience for many to read and understand a world quite different from its ancient past.

So glad I bought this book in paperback as you need to flip back and forth from the text to the maps to follow the wild adventures of this fascinating woman who fluent in Arabic ,Persian and modern Euorpean languages dares to set out to visit dessert sheiks in their tents in the middle of nowhere.Luckily for posterity she kept a detailed diary of everything she saw and the people she met. This record keeping was of tremendous use to the English during WW 1, although she was believed only grudgingly by many in the foreign office. Being trained in archeology she also wrote of hervarious finds and photographed them, since many have been destroyed in our present era her information is of the greatest value. Gertrude Bellknew everyone who was worth knowing in a world dominated by British Empire. This is a true story of a woman who shaped her world and theshape of the middle easternworld we have today.

Had we only known....Wallach's careful research and precise presentation lay out the twists and turns of Empire as the British plotted and planned and ultimately carved up the desert kingdoms we know today as Iraq and Iran (among others....). Gertrude Bell's amazing adventures along side so many other key players at the turn of the century provide a most readable and comprehensive look back at the seeds of today's complicated and unsettling Middle Eastern events. An excellent layman's introduction to the history and culture of the region and a cautionary tale....

I honestly loved this book and do recommend it. The warning is that it's fairly one-sided. This fascinating, complex, and important woman was as difficult to deal as anyone else so intelligent and certain of their own intelligence. The author writes as if she was difficult only in the eyes of others, noting times when people had problems with her, not that she, herself was difficult. You are given the impression that she was simply smarter than everyone else, that they couldn't keep up. Even the author says she was blunt to the point of being rude and tactless. Elsewhere she quotes someone as saying - I'd have to look it up - that you had to take Bell on her own terms, everything from her very confident point of view. But except for when she was a child the author doesn't allow for this having negative effect on how people interacted with her.Nor does she allow that there might have been times when Bell was wrong. Now and then she does say Bell would "be convinced . . ." from what she'd thought while with one group to what she thought now that she was with a different one. But there's no awareness that it meant Bell was wrong the first time or might be equally wrong this time. Coming up with examples requires going back and reading a great deal of history, that fact that it does shows how much has been left out.Without inclusion that Bell was sometimes difficult and difficult to deal with and why you are left with a far less nuanced understanding. Without including her possibly being wrong you are left with her always being right, so impossible that you start to doubt everything she thought and did. There are other reasons I'd give this only four stars but they are less important and mainly stem from author not using her research to give us an analysis of Bell, simply the result of her own analysis. You find that Bell's life was influenced by the early loss of her mother, deep love of her father, her father's remarriage, and a step-mother who had a perhaps excessively high standard for the children but you have to find it from things said along the way and interpreting them as a whole. The author's research is excellent, including consulting about how a child would respond to the early loss of her mother, but it comes out in tidbits and repeated tidbits instead of Bell's background and how she became the person she was.I really do recommend Desert Queen if you're gathering relevant books. As a bookaholic I'm finally learning to not look into everything that might possibly be of interest because I wake up from it hours later. Because I like what she did with Desert Queen I've searched out reviews and downloaded a sample of Wallach's next one, The Richest Woman in America: Hetty Green in the Gilded Age to see how she did.

I have two rambunctious little boys at home. William just turned four and Henry is two and a half years old. With #MeToo, #YesAllMen, and the gross Gillette commercial that aired recently, many moms just like me are concerned for what kind of world our boys will grow up in. How can we raise young men that aren't participating in #toxicMasculinity, but that are in fact masculine? Having grown up in a single parent household with my mother, I had no clue, and I wanted a better understanding of what masculinity is supposed to be. I decided to start looking at books geared towards parenting boys. A friend of mine recommended Boys Should Be Boys: 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons by Dr. Meg Meeker and I went right out and bought it.Let me say, if you are one of those people who has #Feminist in your twitter bio, you are probably going to HATE this book. Dr. Meeker takes a no-nonsense approach to boyhood. She talks practically and with true pragmatism about the challenges that boys face in our modern society.Dr. Meeker address things like:pornographyboundaries and ruleselectronicsteenagerssexhow to address difficult situationsthe influence of mothersthe importance of fathersThe real kicker for me came on page 224, where Meeker writes:“There are only a handful of adults in your son's life who will teach him the great lessons in life. As his parent, seize the day. HE won't learn these virtues from three hours of television, two hours of computer time, or even six hours in school. He needs to learn them from you, and to see how you put them into practice. There's no time like the present to help your son become the man you want him to be. He is waiting.”As I said before, Meeker doesn't pull any punches. She is a huge advocate for masculinity and boyhood and calls out lazy parenting and schooling for creating this fear of masculinity that we see so predominantly in society today. Overall, I give Boys Should Be Boys: 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons by Dr. Meg Meeker a SOLID A+ and I recommend it for anyone who has a son, knows a little boys, teaches school, works at a church, or might one day want to have a positive impact in a young man's life.

This is a great book about being a father to boys. Some reviewers say this is fundamentalist-religious, anti-feminist, anti-single-mother, or whatever. Ignore them. This book is simply very good, common sense advice and you should buy it and inculcate its lessons. As a man who grew up without his father and a bad step-father, I know in my gut some things were very wrong with the way I was raised. Is this a slam against my mother? No. It's simply the realization that she couldn't do it all and that I needed a better man in my life than I had. Now that I am father to a son, who do I look to for advice? Where do I turn? How can I avoid making the mistakes made with me? How can I help my son to grow up emotionally fitter than I was (or am)? How can I help him to be successful without being overbearing? How can I stop the generations-long family tragedies and try to have a good family? This book helps.Dr. Meeker gives voice to what I recognize went wrong with me, my dad, and his dad. And by articulating it, by giving a name to the problems, I can meet those problems head on, avoid them or overcome them. I'm very thankful that she wrote the book and I am glad I bought it. It was a painful read at times because it dredged up bad memories that really made it clear just how poorly I was raised, but at the same time it fills me with hope that I can raise a happy and healthy son.By the way, I bought the Kindle edition and with that I was offered a discount to buy the audio edition for only $3.99. I took a chance and bought it. I'm so glad I did, and it's a testament to how great Amazon is. I reckon that I will buy hard copies of this book and give them to friends and family.

Made me reconsider how I will be raising my two year old. It was tough in some places, but I really learned and can refocus my attention now. It also made me appreciate how my dad raised me and where I can do better. It was a great book on how to raise confident sons into men.

What a great book! I have t even finished the 1 st chapter and I’ve already learned so much and made a list of things that I can see that basically are not working. After reading it makes so much more sense time why these are not producing the outcome I expected...because I am raising boys! They need to be allowed to be boys. My husband and I have already begun to trade screen time for green time for our boys and they have no complaints! Meg Meeker, thank you for following the Lord and using your profession to help millions of kids and parents! You have always been a blessing in our home and we thoroughly enjoy you podcast.

I have two little boys and this has made a huge difference on how I think about raising them. It is intuitive and interesting to listen to. I plan to read it every few years throughout my boys' childhood and adolescence. It doesn't push beliefs or any kind of agenda, just presents what the author has found to be true from years and years in the industry.

this is a fantastic book, written by a medical doctor who is also a mom. her ideas are solid and informative, suggesting the 2 most important things you can do to raise a healthy son is to 1. spend time with him and 2. teach him about God. I am enjoying reading her insights and ideas.

I love this book and have told many people about it. It really breaks down parental roles and what our boys need to be contributing members of society vs the entitled generation that we keep creating.

Ideas of gender neutrality have hurt our understanding of males at every stage of their development. There is good information in here that will go against current social trends, but it is exactly what needs to be understood.

Imagine that you are taking a senior undergraduate seminar class, and the professor has picked out about a dozen recent social science papers (1/3 authored by Angrist) with econometric analyses in order to teach the various statistical methods that you learned in your econometrics class. That is what this book feels like. The topics of the papers try to answer causal questions such as, “Does low cost or free health insurance improve health outcomes?”, “Does attending a highly selective private university lead to higher earnings compared to a less competitive public university?”, and “Do charter schools increase student test scores?” The authors introduce the background for each paper then describe their favored econometric techniques to determine the answers (randomized trial, regression, instrumental variable, regression discontinuity, and differences-in-differences). The first 3 techniques are covered extensively in most introductory econometrics textbooks, while the last 2 are much less covered. A few other econometrics topics are sprinkled throughout the text. For those with an economics degree or a very good grasp of statistical analysis, this book can be a nice refresher on econometric techniques used to determine causal effects through experiments or quasi-experiments. A more advanced treatment (with linear algebra and calculus) of the same topics can be found in the authors’ other book “Mostly Harmless Econometrics”.For those that are upper level economics or social science majors in college, this book can serve as a supplement to an econometrics or advanced statistics class by providing real examples of econometrics in action and act as a bridge to understanding econometrics research articles. The book seems to be aimed at the college student that has had at least 1-2 classes of college level statistics. Even though the hard core math that would be found in an econometrics textbook is left to the appendices, there are plenty of equations and mathematical constructs in the main text that require a fairly solid understanding of math to fully appreciate the analysis. For the general public that may have had a statistics class in high school or less, the analysis will likely be too difficult, however the introductory comments and conclusions for each paper may be of interest. This book is not likely to be found in most public libraries. There is some humor and historical notes to offset the heaviness of the material.

This is watered down version of the book the authors wrote about econometrics (Mostly Harmless Econometrics). If you are just starting to explore the world of econometrics, and the tools and techniques that are used, this is a great book to start with. I also have the other book and do have to agree that the original book was a much harder read than the one I am reviewing.

This book is the perfect companion guide for economists (or any social scientists, really) who are early in the process of learning econometrics or statistics. Well-written, it's an entertaining study into what can be a very dry topic so props to Angrist and Prishke for writing a good book. This book will not replace an econometrics course, but if you're like me who took the course years ago and needed a refresher, this is perfect. Or, it can be used to supplement and better understand your current course. Further, by looking at actual studies, Angrist and Prishke make the move from abstract into useful for regressions and the like.I highly recommend. I use this (and their companion Mostly Harmless Econometrics) in my PhD econometrics course

I couldn't express how much appreciation I have on this book -- it is written by true masters in a most accessible way for readers to get the essence and spirit of applied empirical work to investigate causal relationship.Econometrics is hard to learn. It is rare to find textbooks teaching econometrics in an intuitive, accessible and empirical and application focused way. This book really fills the gap.The authors also wrote Mostly Harmless Econometrics (MHE), which is a more advanced treatment mostly for graduate students and researchers. I would highly recommend reading this book first.Lastly, thank you the two masters writing this book. It is remarkable. I wish they keep writing another book that is filling the gap between this one and MHE.

This is a really good introduction to applied econometrics. The authors elect for a more intuitive approach than they take in their earlier book, Mostly Harmless Econometrics. The result is an entertaining and easy read that provides a nice conceptual understanding of the ideas behind applied econometrics. This would be a good book to read over the summer before taking an course in econometrics if you are completely new to the field. Readers with more experience and/or knowledge in the field will find the book a little light on the technical details, but nonetheless very interesting and useful as a refresher on the conceptual stuff.

Very good introductory book to econometrics. I am a graduate student in a PhD Econ program and it helped me even to understand some of the concepts covered in my courses. I think this would be a good supplement for any undergraduate or graduate level econometrics course

The Kindle version is easy to read (equations are clear and text resizing works well). Excellent for a quick course for uninterested undergrads/masters of something other than economics. Their use of the word "residual" seems nonstandard and could cause confusion.

A very well-written book. Clear, interesting and an enjoyable read. There is sufficient mathematical formulaic representations without overwhelming those who are new to the literature. For those who have a good background, it enhances the comprehensibility of the connections between formulas and methods involved in causal inferential statistics.

This book is for people over 50 who 1) are athletic cyclists who crossed the age of 50; 2) have been athletic cyclists in their youth and, being over 50, want to take up again; or 3) are new to the bicycle world being over 50 and want to start cycling competition, races and endurance rides. Getting this book will reap a lot of rewards and be an always necessary reference work to look at. It is comprehensive, well written, and very informative. It explains what changes happen to your body after 50, and how to deal with those changes in order to continue on high performance and endurance rides. However, the commuter / leisure / weekend rider over 50 who wants to get some workout benefit from his or her routinely rides in order to stay healthy and fit, might find some gems hidden under the technical sports medical information and training schedule plans... but doesn't necessarily have to get this book. There are many other practical guides for commuters and city riders available out there (like i.e. "Just Ride" from Grant Petersen)

Finally I have a rational guide to training for older riders! At 67 I had spent the winter riding a bit and then had to ramp up my training prior to a Gran Fondo in my home town. I had registered for this event and had an interest in completing my training for the event. I thought I would die! Week after week I was doubling my miles and knew this was not good. I needed some guidance in establishing a more rational plan for training.Through this book, I have come to further understand VO2 capacity. Years ago I was monitoring my pulse to insure that I was meeting the 75% goal I learned about from Kenneth Cooper while becoming a runner. It was interesting that I never came to understand that there is a wide world above the 75% threshold.Starting slowly, and within a week of getting the book, I bought a watch with heart monitoring capabilities. Now just monitoring my work load I am able to adjust my effort in real time (no pun) by simply glancing at the watch. Based on my age, my VO2 max is 152 BPM. I was delighted on one ride when my Maximum output was 174 BPM, and that I did not collapse! Proof positive, to me that there is much I have to learn about establishing a more accurate picture of what my actual capacity for exercise is and to monitor this periodically.I am so reassured that my performance can be improved by following the principles in Mr. Friel's book, I just purchased a new bike to use exclusively in my training. If you have wondered when the joy of cycling will end read this book!

It is often said that there are two types of cyclists: those who have not crashed and those who have. I would add to this cycling wisdom there are those who are over fifty and those who are not. This is a pretty good book if you are an over fifty cyclist who is relatively new to cycling. It is well written and to the point. The training suggestions are well grounded and clearly thought out for the benefit of the over fifty cycling group. If you are over fifty and cycling, I am happy to suggest this book. If you are a younger cyclist, I suggest the Joel Friel's other book, The Cyclists Bible. One of the knocks on this book is that it is a watered down version of The Cyclists Bible for the over fifty set. I don't think so. The Cyclists Bible, which I also have, is focused for a different athletic group of cyclists and the content clearly reflects that. Cycling Past 50 is equally focused but for older cyclists. Friel's thesis that older cyclists should train differently is spot on, I think. This book will be helpful for those who are cycling past fifty and need good advice in order to reach their cycling goals, and/or to enjoy cycling all the more, which is why I bought this book-for the love of cycling. I really hate going to health clubs where I live, but often you have to lock me away from my bike to stop me from spinning off into the countryside. I cycle for the love of cycling. Cycling is not something I have to make myself do. On the contrary, I have to make myself not to overdo it, which this book is very helpful at helping me to do. Good cycling to all of you.

This is an excellent book about cycling. Note I didn't say anything about cycling over 50 although I bought it because I started cycling and I'm over 50. So I found myself in a quandry: how can I recommend this to my young cycling friends? They won't want to read this as it's not meant for them. As I was reading I recognized that this had to come from a regular cycling book and to write a new book, the author had just added about 15 pages with mention of being older. Sure enough, Friel is the author of The Cyclist's Training Bible. I haven't read that book but assuming it is similar as the featured reviewer said, it will be a great book also.Look, once you've read one of these training books they all start to sound similar. The advantage of this book is that it simplistically states its case in a manner where the lightbulb goes off in your head. For example, when he talks about climbing he gives statistics about pro cyclists: the best pro climbers have a weight (in lbs.) to height (in inches) of 2-1 or, a 72 inch cyclists (6 feet) would be 144 pounds. 2.2 and 2.3 are exceptional ratios. And then the point: no pro cyclist has had a ratio of 2.5 to 1. Do your analysis and see your ratio. It will tell you that most body types are going to be elite cyclists. Simplistic but really important info.I strongly recommend this book for older cyclists and younger cyclists also for the book layout, simplicity and quickness of read.
