Have to admit to being initially disappointed when I received this today, a favorite I recall reading to my sons, and realized I'd mistakenly ordered the board book rather than the hardcover. (Maybe I DO need that new pair of reading glasses after all!) I really don't care for how reviews for all formats are combined on a listing, because I'd find it hard to imagine that this board book would garner a 5 star rating from anyone who remembers the full story, since - if you're familiar with it - it entirely leaves out the part of the little bird asking an old car, boat and plane if any of them are his mother, and the baby bird's recounting his travels to his mother once he finally finds her. Obviously, board books are abbreviated, but this is REALLY abbreviated.Suppose the reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because I do think that - given its brevity and very simple words - it'd be a good little (and I do mean little at 5-3/4" x 4-1/4"x 1/2 thick) book for tiny hands to turn by themselves, with thick coated pages that are forgiving of occasionally sticky little fingers. Would be a nice little piece of reading material for a child just learning to read. It's my own fault, and I'll be ordering the hardback as well, but maybe you'd like to know exactly how it reads before making a decision for yourself:"A mother bird sat on her egg. The egg jumped. 'I must get something for my baby bird to eat!' she said. So away she went. Inside the nest, the egg jumped. It jumped and jumped and jumped. Until......out came a baby bird! 'Where is my mother?' he said. He did not see her anywhere. 'I will go and look for her,' he said. Out of the nest he went. Down, down, down! Plop! The baby bird could not fly. But he could walk. 'Now I will go and find my mother,' he said. 'Are you my mother?' the baby bird asked a kitten. The kitten just looked and looked. It did not say a thing. 'Are you my mother?' the baby bird asked a hen. 'No,' said the hen. 'Are you my mother?' the baby bird asked a dog. 'I am not your mother. I am a dog,' said the dog. 'Are you my mother?' the baby bird asked a cow. 'How could I be your mother?' said the cow. 'I am a cow.' The baby bird stopped to think. The kitten and the hen were not his mother. The dog and the cow were not his mother. 'I have a mother,' said the baby bird. 'I know I do. I will find her. I will. I WILL!' Just then the baby bird saw a big thing." (A power shovel.) "YOU are my mother!' he said. The big thing said, 'SNORT!' 'Oh no!' said the baby bird. 'You are not my mother. You are a scary snort!' The Snort lifted the baby bird up, up, up. Then something happened. The Snort put the baby bird right back in the tree. The baby bird was home! Just then the mother bird came back. 'I know who YOU are,' said the baby bird. 'You are not a kitten or a hen or a dog. You are not a cow or a Snort! You are a bird, and you are my mother!' "So you can decide for yourself if this is what you're looking for.

I am 52 years old. My mother read this to me as a child-about a million times! When she died in 2012 I bought a copy and wrote her a note inside and she was buried with it. That is how much this book means to me.I just bought another copy- for my first grandchild!!

This book is abridged. They took two or three pages out from the original. Very disappointing.

This is a great Book for early readers. I bought this to read to my 2 year old. I figured that board books would be better since she likes to tear out pages in hard cover books. This is a classic book that she enjoys but to anyone who does not know, this is not the full book. it is really condensed. which in my case is perfect because its short enough to where my toddler doesn't lose focus.

Baby loves this book, it's soft and interactive and apparently delicious judging from the amount of time it spends In her mouth.

Part of the book is upside down ...wtf??!

Our grandson is currently engrossed by two authors, Sergio Ruzzier (and I'll review his books soon), and P.D. Eastman. Before settling down for a nap, he'll take a few of his vehicles or toy animals and read them a story. Often it's this one, which, like all his favorites, he has memorized. The plight of a baby bird who can't find his mother is one that resonates with a toddler. The fact that the baby bird is undaunted by being unable to fly, is unfazed by the fact that he has no idea what his mother looks like, and isn't at all intimidated by the fact that every potential "mother" he encounters is far larger than he, appeals to a two-year-old's "I can do this by myself" mindset. P. D. Eastman had a wonderful gift for grabbing the attention of very young children with both story-line and illustrations, while simultaneously amusing adults. Hence, I never tire of any of his stories, particularly "Are You My Mother", which I have been reading aloud (first to my baby sister, then to my daughters, and now to my grandson) for 55 years.

I bought this for my one-year-old niece as part of her Christmas present. I had this book when I was a kid myself (I'm 39 now!) so I thought it'd be fun to start a little tradition. My niece loves books but her little baby hands aren't the gentlest, so I was very happy to find this in the form of a board book.

I expected to learn a lot more about Barcelona and/or Catalonia from this book, for instance on a par with how much you would learn about Basque country through Mark Kurlansky's The Basque History of the World: The Story of a Nation, but I was disappointed on this point. Rather than containing bona fide chapters with some real substance, Tree's book contains almost nothing but one page vignettes that have been gleaned from a weekly column he writes, and though sometimes they are about Barcelona/Catalonia, often times they are not.I sympathize with the plight of Catalans but I think that the author's arguments in their favor are often specious, and sometimes his facts just downright questionable (I think he writes that Catalan is the 7th most spoken language in the EU and I find that hard to believe). As airplane material -- and indeed I read it on a plane -- it is quite good, albeit like reading a bunch of dis-jointed blog posts, but if you want something even reasonably close to as deep as Kurlansky's treatment of the Basques, you will need to look elsewhere.

To kick off with, we Catalans have to face up to the fact that telling foreigners about Catalonia is never very straightforward. If people in other parts of Spain find understanding the concept of a country within a country difficult to grasp, then those on the other side of the Pyrenees or on the other side of the Atlantic will find it even more so.That is the thankless task that Matthew Tree has been engaged in for many years through his work with many different media outlets, such as The Times of London and other more local publications, such as Catalonia Today or Barcelona INK.Tree is well-known across Catalonia due to the depth of his integration. It is this complete absorption into the very essence of Catalonia, its history, language and institutions, which often gives him a much clearer view of the state of things in the country and an insight into its people. In addition to his shorter articles, Tree has contributed to these various publications, the book also contains more in depth reflections, such as the paper he gave at the London School of Economics in 2008 or another he gave to an international symposium at the University of Lancaster in 2005, which provided an overview of Catalonia's history and literature. It is true to say that Matthew Tree is not an impartial observer. Through his writing he makes a spirited case for Catalonia and the Catalan language and culture and his efforts to resist the encroachment of Spanish culture and language. That said, you will not find a relentless tirade of propaganda within the covers of his new book. Tree's views and opinions are always well reasoned and behind them lies a true passion to explain the reality of Catalonia's position to the outside world. This London-born writer makes a special effort to breakdown stereotypes and point out things that may seem obvious to Catalans, but pass foreigners by. An example is the postgraduate Dutch student quoted in the book, who asks: "Is Catalan really a written language?". Another good example is Tree's description of the difficulties the speakers of Catalan find in La Franja, the border area where Catalonia and Aragon meet. He uses the case to demonstrate the fallacy of believing Spanish is a persecuted language within Catalonia.

As beloved as Barcelona is to millions of Americans, Catalonia somehow gets completely overlooked. No more than relative handful of North Americans even know the region has a vibrant language and culture separate from the Spanish state. That may change as the region assertively pursues its growing desire for national autonomy. For the curious, this book is a charming yet honest introduction to Catalan politics and culture by one of the region's leading writers -- a Brit! Aspiring novelist Matthew Tree wandered into Barcelona more than two decades ago on a lark, stayed, learned the language, and then began to fashion a brilliant body of work as a man of Catalan letters. The essays assembled here are mostly culled from his weekly column in Catalonia Today, an English language publication for the large anglophone expat community in Barcelona. As a consequence, they tend to toward being short and humorous vignettes of the author's life in the land of Gaudi and paella, though several of columns reflect Tree's frustration with the sometimes alarming anti-Catalan sentiments of the Castilian Spanish towards their restive Iberian neighbors. A few longer pieces toward the end touch on Tree's personal and professional trajectory as a novelist with his feet in two very different, but nonetheless connected, linguistic worlds.

I will be traveling to Catalonia in the summer and wanted to have an idea of what people in the area think of the arguments for and against independence. This was a good look at the pro-independence side, although it is highly repetitive at times. I wouldn't recommend it to the casual reader, but for anyone traveling to the area, it is an interesting piece of background.

The author, through different articles, makes a great job at discovering Barcelona and Catalonia from a social perspective that will even be insightful for the those that live or have lived in Barcelona or Catalonia.Quick and easy read, with simple and clear style, that for sure most of the readers will enjoy!

A great insight into the minds of the Catalans

Great summary of the issues

Lovely articles but not so much about Barcelona and Catalonia though.

From the Publisher

The Star--The public saw her as a gifted child star: the youngest actor to win an Oscar for her role as Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker and the youngest actor to have a prime-time television series bearing her own name. The Nightmare--What the public did not see was Anna Marie Duke, a young girl whose life changed forever at age seven when tyrannical mangers stripped her of nearly all that was familiar, beginning with her name. She was deprived of family and friends. Her every word was programmed, her every action monitored and criticized. She was fed liquor and prescription drugs, taught to lie to get work, and relentlessly drilled to win roles. The Legend--Out of this nightmare emerged Patty Duke, a show business legend still searching for the child, Anna. She won three Emmy Awards and divorced three husbands. A starring role in Valley Of The Dolls nearly ruined her career. She was notorious for wild spending sprees, turbulent liaisons, and an uncontrollable temper. Until a long hidden illness was diagnosed, and her amazing recovery recovery began. The Triumph-- Call Me Anna is an American success story that grew out of a bizarre and desperate struggle for survival. A harrowing, ultimately triumphant story told by Patty Duke herself--wife, mother, political activist, President of The Screen Actors Guild, and at last, a happy, fulfilled woman whose miracle is her own life.

Patty Duke's expiation for her sins makes a searing narrative. It is testament to this great gal's indomitable spirit that she has overcome such a daunting life history and never allowed it to diminish her fine talent as an actor. Her Oscar winning turn as Helen Keller in THE MIRACLE WORKER still has the power to astonish as one of the great performances in the annals of film.I met her recently at an autograph show. She was ready to dance--direct, outgoing, alert and loving. We connected immediately on spiritual matters, on Helen Keller, on life. She introduced me to her husband. In five minutes I felt like family. We hugged and kissed. She was, well--like my big sister (and interestingly, my real-life big sister looks like her). Thanks, Patty. And thanks for letting us see who you are so clearly in the pages you have shared. It couldn't have been easy to write this, but obviously you needed to, and the book has been part of your journey of healing. This blurb is more a rave about the author thus far than a review of her book, so let me do justice to the tome. She's written a densely packed, lucid, readable, chronological rendering of her life that is neither self-pitying nor histrionic. It's just her rational, level-headed voice describing an early life that would have sent anybody around the bend, its devastating repercussions later in adulthood under the pressures of celebrity and bipolar disorder, and her eventual triumph over severe dysfunction. She's come through, and declares she loves her life today and wouldn't change any of it for anything. Like everything she says, that statement rings true. A good read from a good lady.

I was taken by the candor by which Patty Duke, who prefers to be called by her real name, Anna, describes her years of suffering because of her bipolar disorder. The horrors she endured at the hands of her mentors and guardians and her own out-of-control behavior are certainly disturbing. Anna pulls no punches. She tells it like it is. Never sugar coats the pain she caused others. I have a great deal of respect for a celebrity whom we've all come to love through roles that hid the psychological pain she was under who now reveals her truth and in the process educates us about mental illness. That her diagnosis as a manic-depressive gave her the tools to deal with her emotions is the ultimate triumph for someoneI will forever now call Anna. RIP, courageous woman, mother, wife and superb actress.

I enjoyed reading this autobiography. Since I had no recollection of there being any scandals associated with Patty Duke, I assumed that she had the same carefree life that was depicted in her popular TV series. To learn that things were much more complex and far from what they seemed was a real surprise. Though exploited by her manager/guardians and all but abandoned by her parents, she somehow found her way through it and emerged a scarred, but stronger person. She never had a "childhood. and though often surrounded by luminaries of stage and screen, yet felt alone and hopeless. Altogether this story depicts the interesting life of a very talented actress and shows that things are not always as they seem. I highly recommend this powerful book.

I really enjoyed this book. I am a generation behind Patty Duke, but still found this book inspiring and relevant. I remember when I was younger hearing all kinds of tabloid type gossip about Pattie (that she was an alcoholic, drug addict etc.). It was interesting to learn that it all stemmed from bi-polar and I love how she openly discussed the illness and is very candid. I am glad that she was able to pull herself out of the darkness so she was able to inform others of this illness. I like how this is easily written and in chronological order. I haven't seen much of her acting but now I would like to.

This was a good read. I knew bits and pieces of her up-bringing, but had no idea how extremely controlled her every movement, thought and even her emotion was by the Rosses. I am a fan of Patty's screen work and it was a real treat for me to finally read her recollection of events. I do wish that she would have added more detail to the portion about her work on The Patty Duke show, but I cannot really give her a poor review if she really cannot remember (as she stated) this time of her life very well. I always wondered how on earth she ended up with John Astin, and now I think I understand it. Some will criticize her for the way she portrays certain people and events, but I choose to notice how often she accepts responsibility for her actions. The way she wrote this book was in a format where you could imagine her sitting across the table from you, just telling you a story, as if it was a conversation. I appeal to that type of writing. Some will also criticize her for insisting that her relationship with Michael Tell could not have produced her oldest son, Sean, which has since proven to be false. Sean submitted to a DNA test after this book was published that proves otherwise. I choose to believe that 'Anna' was in a complete daze during that 13 day marriage. To her, was merely another awkward blip in her life of manic events. Now, the fact that I read it on my Kindle was a little frustrating. There is only one portion of the book with pictures included, which seems to be about the middle of it. I wish there was a way to look at the photos at any point in the progress of the book. She would make mention of certain people in her life and I wished I could have gone back to the photo to see what that person looked like.if you're a fan of classic 1960's television and movies, this book will entertain you. Also, if you've ever been involved with someone in your life who has been down a similar road, you will sympathize with Anna and be rooting for her throughout the book.

Grew up with patty duke on tv-i was always partial to Patty -great talent. Great mom. Great story of courage in the face of Hollywood hypocracy! Sean Astin & siblings should be proud of their mom.
