"Children Of Light" is an experimental book within the academic field. The voice of the author is not dominant, the narrative is very largely in the words of the subjects themselves. The questions are not known in advance, the end is not prefigured from the outset. I was raised in the church this book was written about. The True Light Church in Mint Hill NC. I don't know if you weren't from around Mint Hill in North Carolina if you would find this book interesting. I did though. It answered some of the question I had about my family/church history.

Growing up in the area and not really knowing what had transpired, it was a good way to learn about the events that took place in the True Light Church.

I also grew up in this church. I left approx 40+ years ago and was fascinated to learn the details and background information about specific events that occurred while I attended and after I left. The author appears to have gone to great lengths to relate only what he observed and to present a fair and unbiased viewpoint. I would recommend this book especially to anyone who lives in this area and has been curious about the True Light Church.

I enjoyed reading the inside scoop on 1980s-1990s figure skating. This book covers the judging scandals, the revision of the points system and elimination of compulsories. It gives the inside story on how the system worked at the time and how skaters "paid their dues" if they wanted to move into the realm of the icons such as Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton and others of that era. The AIDS era is covered in great detail as is the homosexuality of many skaters who, at the time, were in the closet. The Kerrigan-Harding scandal is covered and you may find that some of the so-called "ice princesses" were really witches in disguise. The book is informative and very entertaining. The only drawback is the book is written from the 80s-90s years making some of the information out-dated but for the figure-skating buff you will likely enjoy this book. I know I did.

This book is now dated, figure skating is scored quite differently now, then it was when this book was written. The skaters in the book have long since been replaced by a current crop. Not being an "insider", I don't know how the "politics" of figure skating have changed, but I'd suspect that the "politics" is also at least a bit different from when the book was written.Still, the book is an entertaining read into the world of figured skating in the '90's. The book introduces us to personalities and gives us some background on the famous personalities of that time period. It's interesting to contemplate that today's prominent figure skaters were just starting out when this book was written. In that regard, this book provides an interesting look at how today's prominent skaters were raised in the world of figure skating.

Brennan does a great job in bringing the reader into the inside world of figure skating. This book is so well written and enjoyable that I read it several times. It was fascinating reading about the double dealings, backstabbing and intrigue involved in this sport. Brennan also touches on the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding story and debunks the perception most people have about Nancy Kerrigan being "America's Sweetheart." Another fascinating part of this book was the story on the sacrifices parents make for their children for figure skating, and how champion skaters are raised. If you are a figure skater, enjoy sports, or interested in history/politics, you will definitely love this book.

This is a really good look at the world of figure skating. It gives you a better view of judging and what the skaters go through to become champions. All of the popular American skaters are covered, well as a few up and comers. The book is full of history and gossip. It is a really fast read.

Lots of inside information about figure skating that most of us might never have guessed! A good and fast read!

This is Brennan's expose on figure skating, the figure skating of the 1990s, that is. Basically, Brennan finds all sorts of corruption in the highest levels of the sport. Judges trade support for skaters from each others' factions. The Cold War may be over but it was still alive and well in 1990s figure skating, as formerly communist countries aligned as did the US, Canada, and western Europe.Of all the things to say about this book, the most important is that it is out of date. Michelle Kwan was an up-and-coming teenager when this was written. This book was written pre-IJS, and that's only one of the many things that has changed in the sport. While I don't deny that there are still problems and accusations of favoritism, IJS has solved, or at least greatly lessened the kinds of judging problems Brennan illustrates. For the figure skating fan of 2013 this book reads more like a historical document. My main issue was a much more esoteric one. For all the time that she spent researching and reporting on figure skating, I never really felt like Brennan had a deep, emotional connection to the sport. While she recognizes the difficulty of the sport, Brennan just never seemed to have the spiritual attachment that is evident among figure skaters and many fans. I really think this book could have been written more effectively by someone with that emotional attachment. That's why people do this crazy thing, where they whiz around a slippery surface on quarter-inch blades. There's something in the body movements and the music that makes the moment transcendent.

terrific book, great seller!

Having just finished this terrifically addictive book, I was thrilled to learn she's written an update and hope she considers writing more skating-related nonfiction in the future. I'll admit I was a bit chagrined to learn she focused pretty much entirely on American figure skaters (seems like Paul Wylie was a primary source for much of her material which is interesting) in this work, but those who she does focus on are fascinating subjects after being touched upon by Brennan's prose. She jumps (pardon the pun) about a bit from skater to skater, but I greatly appreciated the insight into Nancy Kerrigan's history as well as Janet Lynn and Michelle Kwan, to name a few. Her chapter on Christopher Bowman reminded me of how supremely talented he was, and how he didn't know what to do with it all besides fritter it away; it's especially poignant considering his recent demise, which could have been predicted by pretty much anyone who came into contact with him during his skating years. I plan to send my copy of Brennan's "Inside Edge" to my mother as she too has been a longtime figure skating fan, and look forward to seeing what else she touches upon in "Edge of Glory".

Where Honeybees Thrive: Stories from the Field (Animalibus)

Review

“Honeybees and humans are tightly linked, and the global demise of these keystone insects is both alarming and very bad news for the bees, humans, and numerous other nonhuman animals. Heather Swan's book—the compelling text and beautiful artwork—makes it clear that bees and humans will suffer immeasurably as we try to endure ‘the rage of inhumanity’ and political ecology that characterize the Anthropocene unless we change our behavior right now. Coexistence is mandatory and time is not on our side. Where Honeybees Thrive is a reading experience reminiscent of Rachel Carson's classic Silent Spring.”—Marc Bekoff, co-author of The Animals’ Agenda: Freedom, Compassion, and Coexistence in the Human Age“This book is pure gold. To understand the life around us is perhaps the most important thing we can do for our planet, and Where Honeybees Thrive is a huge step forward. We are too inclined to think that the tiny animals don’t matter, or that they’re dispensable because there seems to be so many of them. If you know people with that opinion, please give them this book because it can change their minds.”—Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, author of The Hidden Life of Dogs“Where Honeybees Thrive isn’t a book for people only interested in the practice of beekeeping, nor for left-brain theorists or right-brain dreamers. It is for readers who find themselves adrift in the middle space, never entirely here nor there, searching for tranquility amid the hum.”—Joe Phillips, Minding Nature“A beautifully written and original approach to the crucially important and still underappreciated problem of bee decline in the modern world. With a lyrical, searching style that recalls the best of Annie Dillard, Swan argues eloquently and persuasively both for the urgent need to intervene in this global crisis and for the myriad ways in which mindfulness about bees can help human beings understand themselves more deeply.”—Eric C. Brown, editor of Insect Poetics“Anyone who likes honeybees, or is even afraid of honeybees, will find this book fascinating and infectious. The author carries us on a glorious journey into the lives of honeybees and the people who keep and cherish them. The story is woven with passion and a lively blend of prose, poetry, art, and philosophy—it is part love song, part lament, part quest, and entirely engaging. Just as Rachel Carson dramatized the plight of our environment in the face of modern chemicals, Heather Swan portrays the plight of bees in light of modern agricultural practices and insecticides. Where Honeybees Thrive is a must-read for lovers of nature, bees, and books.”—Justin O. Schmidt, author of The Sting of the Wild“A very special and encouraging book—a great gift for anyone with concern for bees.”—Bees for Development Journal“I suggest you kick back with a glass of mead as you savor the storytelling of master beekeeper and bee lover Heather Swan. This is a unique and worthwhile book, a new twist on honey bees that you are not likely to find anywhere else.”—Stephen Buchmann, The Quarterly Review of Biology

Wonderful book looking at the many worlds we share with bees and those who help care for and celebrate them—all while asking what their fate will be. The inclusion of others' stories and work provides multiple ways of seeing how people are approaching the plight facing our bees' future. The writing is lyrical, precise, informed, and insightful. Bee lovers, this book is your song. And for those concerned about the future of our pollinators, it is a call to action.

This amazing book is a treat for all your senses- it's beautifully written but the book itself is also just beautiful. The cover is textured and silky to the touch, and each chapter is punctuated with beautiful artwork. If you know a beekeeper this book would make an enchanting gift! I've just ordered two more for Christmas gifts because I don't want to pass on my copy.

Beautiful book. Loved the illustrations. Interesting anecdotes about bees.

I loved the way the words helped give me vivid imagery. I also enjoyed learning more about the honey bee plight. Awesome read - get your copy soon. This author is also speaking at the International “Learning From the Bees” conference in the Netherlands at the end of August 2018.

loved it! I bought one for myself then another as a gift.

I've just read the sample. From what I've read so far, I think this book is brilliantly written. The lyrical writing style makes what otherwise might be a dry topic come to life. I can't wait to read the entire book.
