A number of books like this are easy reads due to a lack of substance. If you're a seasoned reader of this sort of thing, you may find yourself saying, "Duh, who doesn't know this!" I, however, haven't read much in this genre, so I found it fairly useful. It reads quickly, interspersed with relevant, inspiring quotes. The end of each section of essays has "key takeaways," which is nice if you're only reading a few minutes at a time here and there. All of the authors come from respectable fields, so the content is relevant. Lastly, the design is attractive with it's bold red and black title and quote pages--it just looks cool, which is something not often said about the interior pages of a book. I'd recommend it, and, if I lost it, would probably buy it again.

I am picky about recommending books. This one is one I could recommend to anyone. Its is very insightful and useful. Its a quick read and is good for referencing when you need a pick-me-up when your routine drives you nuts. I highlighted a lot of this book. It also has wonderful quotes. The size of the book makes it easy to carry around anywhere. The font is a good size too. It is a quick read. But pace yourself because it has a lot of good information, that you need to absorb. This could even be a good book as a gift to someone. This book is a keeper in my book collection. I will probably keep this near my desk to glance at.

I don’t think I’ve ever said this about a time-management or organizational or artists’ business book: This is a must-read book for creative entrepreneurs. The pros: The information is delivered in short, easy-to-grasp concepts approached from different creative people’s points of view. It’s like a best-minds approach rather than one person’s opinion. Each section has a key-takeaways page which revisits what you just read. I found it quite helpful in making the points stick in my brain.Speaking of the brain, I like the way the book addresses the science of the brain (in layman terms, no technobabble). It’s reassuring when science backs up a creative person’s work habits. Also, it’s a beautiful book! The black, red, and white pages, and the black and white fonts, and the different sized fonts, and the raised and impressed text on the cover (and the little fold out flaps) . . . it’s so visually and texturally appealing. The cons: Umm, can’t think of anything. I wished for more . . . I suppose that’s like a con.Overall, a five-star, must-read, beautiful book!

There is nothing earth shatteringly new in Manage Your Day-to-Day: Build Your Routine, Find Your Focus, and Sharpen Your Creative Mind but it is a great read. A collection of short essays from twenty leading creative minds, it will remind you of all the things you've read over the years about good creative practice and it will give you the reasons behind why you should make the changes you know you need to make. And it will give you some insights into why some of your current behavioural practises leave you feeling the way you do. I read it as part of a comprehensive overhaul of all aspects of my life. I took notes, I highlighted, I reread and I started making the changes. And bit by bit I'm beginning to feel like I'm rediscovering what I experienced in my week away. For me it's not about finding a way to "get the work done", it's about finding the space to revel in doing what I love. When that happens, the work gets done and done well.If you want to live a different way AND you are in a headspace where you're already committed to making the changes needed, then buy this book. It will inspire and give you some great food for thought to help you on your way. If you're not, don't bother. It's not a magic wand and it won't make a shred of difference. But I urge you to bother, to care, to take the leap, because it really, really is worth it.

I did glean some interesting ideas from this writing. The most interesting insight for me is that if those noted in this book can do it, then I can do it. The reading was somewhat of a rollercoaster, interesting in some spaces and dreadfully boring in some others. Overall the practical of building a routine was hidden in the pontificating of abstract and disconnected thought in many instances. The book is excellent in providing resources for additional investigation of the passages that do interest the individual.

"Manage Your Day-To-Day" was the first book I read and reviewed for my blog (Mad Man Thoughts)—and I was not disappointed. Anyone who knows me or follows my blog knows that I'm an unorganized person whose mind is constantly drowned in abstract thought and incomplete reflection. I felt like this book was written specifically for me. Behance—the company behind this book and the 99U program—interviewed a plethora of intelligent, witty, creative people and gathered their insights and strategies for building a routine, finding focus, managing new technology, pushing through creative blocks, and taking your skills and talents to the next level. I highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles to get organized, focus on the task at hand, and/or finish creative projects. This book flows well and is very easy to read (it's also visually appealing, even on a Kindle Paperwhite E-reader - Black, 6" High-Resolution Display (300 ppi) with Built-in Light, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers). The only downside of this book is that it does not go into great depth on any of the tactics or strategies mentioned. However, this seems to be purposeful as it allows you to ruminate on what was said.Overall, I loved it! Next, I'm reading the other book in the series: Maximize Your Potential: Grow Your Expertise, Take Bold Risks & Build an Incredible Career (The 99U Book Series 2)

This book is a lot of blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Nothing new; collection of cliched how-to articles. It’s a waste of money.

there are many books on the satipatthana sutta. however most are very much a focused interpretation of the sutta in light of a single teachers ideas about it. they may for example only focus on breathing or another of the practices and only vaguely touch on everything else in the sutta. some of these are wonderful books that surely can lead one to nibbana. but i have been searching for one that details the whole sutta as there's a lot more to it than just a couple of practices.bhante covers everything from start to finish. it is still colored with his own interpretation of the sutta but it's not even possible to write a commentary on a sutta without personal interpretation and he sticks to fairly traditional explanations, keeping it largely impersonal. my only critiques are:1. that he could have included the sutta itself but at least it's a widely available sutta. just web search "satipatthana" and you'll have no problem finding it. and2. that he doesn't give a definitive answer too the question of how many of the exercises you are supposed too practice and when to do them. there are a ton of exercises in the sutta and i have yet to see an author explain this problem (although i imagine analayo covers it in "satipatthana")! the wikipedia page on the satipatthana sutta gives these options:"Single-focused, successive and simultaneous practices:There are a variety of ways that one could use the methods described in the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta including: 1.Focus on a single method. The method most written about in the English language is that of mindfulness of breath. 2.Practice the various methods individually in succession. 3.Maintain breath mindfulness as a primary object while using other methods to address non-breath stimuli. 4.Practice multiple methods either in tandem or in a context-driven manner."i would add to option three that there are other options of what to pick as the primary object (it doesn't have to be the breath if one is using this interpretation, for example one could use the modes of deportment as the primary object) and then use the other methods to address whatever else arises that is not the primary object.as is typical for the author he puts everything in very easily understood wording and easily digested logic.he talks you through how to use the methods found in the sutta to see impermanence, suffering, and not self in your own life, day by day. if you follow his instructions carefully and earnestly you will start to see light shining through the cracks in the walls that make up reality. and who knows, maybe this will lead you to full on nibbana!one note: on page 96 bhante writes "Remember that you do want to die with anger". knowing enough about buddhism i'm 99.9999% sure he meant "Remember that you do NOT want to die with anger". just so everyone is clear on that point. it would be VERY bad for the path to deliberately die with anger. we are supposed to make great efforts to die without anger.update: i contacted the publisher and they confirmed it is an error that will be fixed in later editions.

I am new to mindfulness. A recent trip to Myanmar and the death of my parent made me think deeper about life, about purpose and about myself. I wasn't really seeking mindfulness or buddhism perse. Its more like I went on a trip and did some tourist activities and then realized I really liked what I saw and heard. So I came back to the States and wanted to read more. Basically, I was looking at a beginner-intermediate book (not so beginner that its like those "mindfulness for dummies" books but something that was deeper and would take you through a journey of learning)He explains everything well, which is exactly what I needed. I do wish there was a bit of history in it. I would like to know more about the life of Buddha (maybe one chapter?). The book goes right into mindfulness. In terms of mindfulness itself: it really is written in plain-English. I like how it tells you EXACTLY what sitting, walking and sleeping meditation is and what actions/behaviors you have to focus on when you are doing it.I read through it really slowly and practice it everyday now because he writes in a very encouraging way. For example, he mentions how folks who try lotus position may find it very difficult the first time around and he talks about how you should persevere. It took him a while too even though he was meditating (in another position) for decades! This was a great starting place for getting into mindfulness. As you progress and become more intermediate, it serves as a great reminder (through re-reading) of your foundation.

This book is very, very good. You don't have to be an expert and/or even a Buddhist to benefit from this book. Anybody can use these techniques. The key is that they are "GROUNDING" techniques to help get you out of your head and/or get you out of the world. Get you back into your body. Amazing, ancient techniques. Not hard at all. It covers, basically, everything in Buddhism but also you "Do" these techniques. Anyway, if you don't like this stuff, don't bother. Myself, I love this stuff.Chuck H.

Whether you approach Buddhism as a religion, a path for meditation, or a philosophy, you will find something of value in this book. I am a list-maker, and there were plenty of lists here - e.g. the 8 steps of Buddha's Path, the 4 noble truths, and the 7 factors of enlightenment. Basic help gained from the book included more understanding of meditation on the breath, staying in the present moment, and the importance of the concept of impermanence.

This is an excellent overview of the Satipatthana Sutta. All of the "Plain English" books are highly recommended. Bhante G has the ability to communicate in ways that all can understand. If you would like a more in-depth treatment of this sutta I recommend "Satipatthana: The Direct Path to Realization" by Analayo. To get a basic understanding start with Bhante G and then go to Analayo for a more scholarly treatment. Both are excellent.

Clearly written by a master and highly evolved teacher. One of the essential guidance books for the practitioner and for those who wish to practice.Highly and warmly recommended.

One of the best books on mindfulness I have read. I came away with a much deeper understanding of this practice.

Written in very plain english. Easy to understand.

I really loved all the Percy Jackson series. It was wonderful to see how all the parts connected in the end, no lose ends. I love that these books don't leave anything open to interpretation and explain the story very well. I really enjoyed all the adventure, it was great! The characters are also very easy to empathize with, I already miss Percy and Annabeth. The one thing that left me a bit disappointed about this book in particular is that with it being the last one in the series revolving around the first great prophecy, and Percy finally having to play his very important part, I expected more conflict on him. Percy is under a lot of pressure and tension, I think it would have been more realistic, and more pleasing therefore, to see more conflict go on within him, to see him struggle a bit more to make the right decisions and therefore see some growth in his own personality, to go deeper and give more meaning to the "yealding" Hestia talks about. In short: I think we didn't see Percy really "yealding". It seems that everything was a bit too easy for him when it came to making decisions. That felt too unreal. I feel that the whole topic of yielding, maturing, being generous and really having to struggle to get there, which is what most have to go through, wasn't represented in a realistic manner. It was too simplistic. On a final note, as much as I have found this new take on mythological stories fun and entertaining, I'm not sure I'll read the other books in The Heroes of Olympus and The Trials of Apollo series. It gets boring if you only read about the same thing. It would be great if the author wrote about other things besides mythology, and offered us new adventures to read without having anything to do with mythology.

My oh my oh my. I loved this one. When the previous book in the series, Battle of the Labyrinth, was all set-up to Last Olympian, I was worried Riordan wouldn’t stick the landing or it wouldn’t be satisfying enough.I was wrong.I think about two thirds of this book was all the battle that the entire series has been building to, which was so smart because it made it feel so big and important. There was no last minute gotchas, no subverting the fighting and attrition the war needed. If delivered on the big and epicness that has been promised since book one.My only complaint, and it isn’t big enough to detract from my rating, is just the same one I have for every book in this series. I don’t love Riordan’s writing. I think he needs to slow down and take his time. I’m not saying turn these in to 600 page books, but just add 50 pages to the thing and give us some details and descriptions. Middle grade is plenty able to have depth and I just hope his future series have that in mind. But, for The Last Olympian, I think Riordan outdid himself. This is clearly the best book in the series, and an incredibly satisfying conclusion to everything preceding it. 5 stars.

This was a really good book. It may even be my favorite of the series. It gets right down to business from the beginning. The fight is in full force. Poseidon is battling to protect his kingdom under the water, the half-bloods must defend Camp Half-Blood and the city of Manhattan, and the gods take their own stand leaving Olympus defenseless.Percy has to face some serious obstacles in this book and he becomes the true leader I've been wanting to see in the series. He leads his army against Kronos even when the odds are stacked up against him. Annabeth is always at his side and always makes a great companion with Percy. I loved that in this book you find out about Anabeth and Lukes past together and what led him to do what he did. This book was all-around very good.

Awesome! I'm not really fully satisfied with the series ending, since I was left wondering what the heck happens to everyone, but it was a great addition to the series, and a great end to the main storyline. I loved it. Let me put it simply: If you like YA books, appreciate a good sense of humor, and have even the slightest interest in Greek Mythology, this series is one that you MUST read, if you haven't done so yet. They are not only greatly entertaining, but are based on the actual Greek myths, meaning they can teach you some things you may not know as well. As for the conclusion, while I might not be thrilled with how it was left largely up in the air, I also am quite happy to say that this is one of the relatively few book series that did not miss a step right through to the end, with the same level of humor and enjoyment to be found in this book as was found in the book that introduced me to the series. So, please, if you fall in the group mentioned above, do yourself a favor and check it out.

I love Rick Riordan and all of his series. Percy was the first. As an adult I still love these characters and story-line. These are great books. I love the Greek mythology and found myself doing research on some of the "gods" i was unfamiliar with. I reread this series every few years. The audiobooks are great for road trips.

I don't mean that in a bad way (just as long as you have read the previous books). I suggest this book to any age. Those who prefer nonfiction may not like this, but you never know. What I found different about this book next to the other books is that it was sadder and more violent. But despite that sadness and violence I absolutely LOVED THIS BOOK. I really suggest that if you liked the previous books by Rick riodan than you will certainly like this one even more. As for the hero's of Olympus (the series after this one series) I also suggest you read. This series is even better than the first. I have read all of them. As I said before I LOVED THESE BOOKS. I hope you love these books too. Peace out, DAVID
