The "official" Ruby book. This is a good book, but I didn't really like the way ruby was divided up into a couple of different sections covering the same topics. Also it could be half as long really. The reference in the back is not useful to me. I would rather look up this detailed language reference on the web at the ruby docs site. The extra thickness makes the physical book harder to hold and read.

Very detailed reference book. This is a must have for every rails developer, but if you are a complete beginner, this book will likely not give the guidance needed unless the person already has strong OOO skills from other languages. If you are new to programming, this book will be useful - but not the best starting point as it is a reference guide and not a guide to teach someone how to program and about OOO.

I needed to learn Ruby in hurry, as there was an urgent need to rewrite a module that was giving trouble in Perl because of a problematic CPAN module. This book gave me all I needed to quickly learn the language and rewrite the module in Ruby.

After the other reviews in this column piqued my interest, I picked this CDrom up in one of the Mansions stores a couple of weeks ago,and boy, am I glad I did! Great insight to the construction of the mansions including, the materials used, styles used, builders etc.. There is a brief narration for each one that gives dates & facts , along with 8 classical tunes that play at random as you wander about. The only constructive criticism is that you don't get narration for each room as you enter, just at the beginning of each VR tour. I'm sure it would've been too costly and time consuming to do that anyway. But, you can even do an auto tour where you sit back and relax, while the camera pans to different rooms, or you can do the manual tour at your own pace. Great quality! Runs smoothly with no popping or skipping, and the picture quality is terrific! You can zoom, spin, look down, up, to get a closer look at that special vase, or to look at the gilded ceiling tiles. Great for those who have never been to get an inside look, or a great momento for those who have visited the 10 mansions from the preservation society. You'll feel like you've wandered back in time to the Victorian age on Bellevue Ave.......................

I just love the Newport Mansions. This CD is great because I can never remember all the details when I visit the mansions, and this CD lets you pan around and up to the ceiling and down to the carpet, also zooming in. You can see all the details that give the rooms their luxurious feel.Also, it's great because I haven't been to all the mansions and through the virtual tours I can see which one I most want to visit next.Now, if they could just figure out a way to get the CD to give you that musty dusty smell of the actual mansions...Seriously, this is very cool and if you are only visiting Newport for a short time, it's worth it to see which mansions you really want to see in person.Jilla

This is a very cool CD showing you the various Newport mansions. You can pan around inside the rooms, looking at all the walls, even the floor and ceiling.I like it because when you visit the mansions there isn't time enough to see them all, and with this CD I can see them all. Also, I can go back to the rooms that I like and study the details in that room. It is very interesting.Anyway, I would recommend this CD. It makes great use of new technology and is fun and easy to use.

I found this book very useful -- it's mercifully short and gets right to the point, with easy-to-implement, practical tips. Probably most helpful for researchers who present at conferences, like me.Edit: I just got back from a conference where I used these tips in my presentations, and I got SO much positive feedback. It was crazy. Suddenly I have a reputation as being a good presenter! Pretty amazing. This book is an amazing resource on presentations. A gold mine of tips and suggestions. The advice is soup to nuts. Presentation structure, slide layout, color, typeface, everything. Chock full of great practical advice. Highly recommended - I made all my graduate students get a copy.

I am an analyst but I don't normally give presentations. One day my boss comes to me and says "Prepare a presentation!". I said "Boss, please, I don't do presentations!". He said "Do it !". Then I searched for a book to help me in the fulfillment of this arduous task. The book is maybe a little too brief and could provide more practical examples but it helped me.

This book is great--well organized and tells you both what not to do and what to do to fix your presentations. Honestly, I wish that most of the researchers in my field would read this book so that I didn't have to sit through boring presentations any more.

I bought this book in May, right as my semester was ending. It was so insightful, that I finished it the day I received it in the mail. I implemented several of the techniques into my summer course and it was very well-received. This is an excellent book for anyone that frequently presents. I'm an academic, so I "present" 30+ times per semester. The tips in this book, combined with the website, make it an extremely useful resource. I usually keep it close by, but it's currently with a colleague -- as word spreads, I imagine I may need to order another copy. :)
